Great place if you are in the area and want a chilled out bar where you can get some good wine and good snacks. Wine ranges from 7-15€ a glass, naturally they also have it available by the bottle. The mixed cheese/meat plate (planche de charcuterie/fromage) are good quality and not too expensive. Clientele is mixed, tourist and local, older and younger. The marble bar is the best place to sit in my opinion, but they have high tables also. Nice relaxed atmosphere, where you can actually hear your companion talk! 4 stars only because of the price is quite high compared to some of my other favourite wine bars. This is a review of O Chateau's "Le Petit Big Day" which is the Introduction to French Wine course along with the champagne cruise on the Seine. First: Introduction to French Wine, one hour They say they're right by the Louvre, but it was more of a walk than we had expected. Factor in at least 20 minutes between the two places. We arrived for the class and were ushered downstairs to the cellar. There was a beautiful large table in the middle of the room, and I took notes as if I were in school again. The stuff he said was fascinating. I've always loved wine but didn't know much about it, and this was a great course. He taught us what it meant when a wine was particularly shiny and when wine needs to aerate and how to tell if someone's just pretending to be a wine snob without actually knowing anything about wine. We learned about the different regions of wine-making in France and what years from which regions were good years. Fantastic, delicious, and educational. I would recommend this to everyone. Second: Champagne Cruise, one hour The directions told us to arrive at least 15 minutes early. We were there 20 minutes early and were just about the last to arrive. We were concerned that we were going to be stuck in this very stuffy room, but as soon as we got going, our guide threw open the big glass doors at the front of the room, and we had free reign of the bow. It was a beautiful trip and well worth the money spent. It seemed to be a MUCH better deal than what the tourists stuck in chairs at the back of the boat without champagne got. I made a reservation for 3 people for their Introduction to French Wine Class and paid the fee through their website since I didn't have the Paris Pass (it's FREE with the Paris Pass). You can receive 10% off the booking fee by using the code in Rick Steve's Guidebook to Paris (it's in there, somewhere). I did not receive a confirmation e-mail and contacted them to confirm my reservation. They replied promptly & confirmed my details & gave my reservation #. We checked-in, gave the employee my name & reservation #, and we were brought downstairs into a beautiful, stunning 17th-century cellar which used to be King Louis XV's sommelier's personal cellar (this wasn't noted in the class, but I read this interesting tidbit online and it made the experience all the more "cool" in my book). As the room filled up, the employee who checked us in walked up to me and said that he made a big mistake and needed to see my pass. I told him I didn't have a Paris Pass and just paid the fee through the website. I showed him the confirmation e-mail & reservation # on my phone. The emailed link they provided only had attachments to different maps & food recommendations, no pass/voucher. He asked for help from the sommelier and they were trying to tell me that they had no record of me paying and that they've only dealt with people with the Paris Pass and didn't know how the online system works (say what?). Eventually the sommelier said that "he would take my word for it," but they both honestly made me feel as if I was lying and didn't pay. I stopped short of showing them my credit card transactions (it's there cleared, processed, PAID!). Perhaps the employees need to be trained more on such a situation as the one that checked us in seemed very unsure of himself? It didn't bother me that day & I was just glad to be able to enjoy the class. However, after some thought this experience left a bad taste in my mouth. In any case, the class itself was very informative regarding french wines. We learned a few new things from how to hold the glass to the 'legs' of the wine. We were offered 1 white and 2 reds. I enjoyed the first 2 and my husband finished the 3rd as it was dry for my taste. I'm not a fan of wine per se, but I will drink it every so often and couldn't pass up the opportunity for a wine tasting in Paris! My husband is a cook and I thought this would be a good experience for him and he enjoyed it a lot. This is a nice, affordable option for those looking to have a taste of great wines. The room was full of honeymooners like us from all around the world and that made it a bit more fun. My husband wanted to try a few more wines, but unfortunately they were closed that day (Sunday) and only opened for the class. Perhaps we'll just have to go back one day! After a Friday evening at the Louvre my mom and I decided to wind down the night with some wine and I knew this place was close by so we ventured on over. Luckily even though it was a Friday night we were able to score a spot at the bar. The wine list is extensive and not knowing exactly what we wanted we decided to try a flight of red wines and a flight of white wines. After the bar tender had poured us our choices, he helpfully went through each wine with us and let us know what to expect. We had 3 white chardonnays from Burgundy and 3 reds from Laungdoc and all were fabulous. We didn't have any food, but the meat and cheese plates looked delightful and the couple next to us had the 3 course meal and they really enjoyed in. This is a great place and while I would recommend it, it should be noted that the majority of the people seemed to English, so if you're looking for someplace with a lot of French atmosphere, this may not be it. read more

Went on the champagne boat cruise through O Chateau last year and it was lovely! It was a little confusing to get to as it loaded on the Seine River next to the Eiffel Tower and there was a whole row of boats with the same thing going on. We chose to sit at the bar and each choose a wine flight. My selection was the 3 glass 12cl Champagne tasting (45€) and my sister's choice was the 6 glass 6cl tour of France tasting. Bulles, Blanc et Rouge (47€). The staff gave a great overview of each of our wines. It's certainly the best tasting experience I've had in a restaurant setting. The staff was incredible and did not rush us- we struck up a conversation with another American couple and decided to order a charcuterie plate to go with our wine. This ended up being our dinner and it was perfect. We had an herbed goat cheese and another soft cheese as well as fig preserves and two types of meat. Along with the French bread it was a perfect way to end our day. We certainly lingered, savoring every sip and bite. We were there over 2 hours. By the time we left the place was hoping. I was traveling solo in Paris for a few days, and booked a wine tasting at Ô Chateau for my first day. Little did I know I wouldn't sleep on my red eye, and instead of browsing the Louvre and popping over here in good time, I'd be waking with a start 20 minutes before my reservation, hauling butt across town. I called ahead to let them know I'd be a little late and they were very kind. ...note to self, don't make any commitments on your first day of travel. You enter the bar and then walk down the stairs to the wine cellar. I was the only solo person there, everyone else seemed to be young couples. At least two couples were on their honeymoon! So this seems to be a great place for date night, but even then, everyone was so friendly, I didn't feel too awkward being by myself. The wine is delicious and high quality, and everything you're tasting is very affordable if you choose to purchase a bottle. I was very grateful for the baskets of bread on the table, since I had slept all day and hadn't eaten. It was nice to have a buffer! I found myself taking so many notes. It was like the most interesting, delicious class ever! I learned so much about wines, the different wine regions in France, and how best to taste wine. Our teacher (I want to say her name is Claudia but it's been a couple of weeks, my brain is mush) was so smart and informative. One of our last days in Paris I decided that we must do a wine tasting with O Chateau and I was surprised to find that many of my friends who came before me had also enjoyed tasting with them. Our sommelier that day was Alain and he was fantastic. As you would expect any sommelier to be, he was knowledgeable and spoke at a level that we all understood. It was clear that in the room we had people of different levels of wine appreciation but he spoke to everyone in such a way that we all learned something. We started with champagne worked our way through the whites, reds then sweet wine. They had magnificent cheese pairings as well. Luckily we had a fun group which made the experience that much better. O Chateau is a beautiful space. We got to sit in their little dining area in the back of the building which was gorgeous. Wine surrounds you in this beautiful mahogany wood. I also decided to get their book as well "Into Wine" written by the founder of O Chateau which I thought was a great easy read for those who are wanting to learn more about how to appreciate wine. I finished it in a couple days and really enjoyed the new tidbits of information that I can now apply to future wine tastings. All in all, a fantastic experience. But if you also wanted a cozy vibe to go with, and some locals, well, first you're probably in the wrong arrondissement; second, you're drinking too early (5:30pm seemed legit!); and third, the signs in English when you went in should have been enough to scare you off. And when the check came and I told the server that I had a 30% discount as they advertised in the Paris Pass, the server told me they would not honor it. Turns out he had recently visited our home town so we had a very nice chat about his time back home. Even though we weren't the only members of the group in this wine tasting, we felt like we were! He paid everyone there attention and answered any and all questions! We left with a breadth of new wine knowledge and a delicious buzz! The tasting was a pretty full glass of 9 different wines and all were delicious!!! And since the wines are chosen at his discretion you won't have the same experience twice! I don't normally review wine-bars because for one, as much as I'd like to be, I'm not a wine connoisseur, but I've been to a number of wine bars throughout Paris to know that Olivier Magny and Nicolas Paradis have a hit on their hands with Ô Chateau. Ô Chateau has been opened since 2004 and they had a 3-year renovation project. No expenses were spared. My Impressions: Physical Space. This has got to be one of the biggest and well planned wine bars in Paris. The main floor of the wine bar is enormous. How Olivier and Nicolas were able to procure such a large place must've been a miracle. Most wine bars in Paris are so tiny that you literally can smell what the person next to you is drinking. Selections of wine displayed. I was amazed at the special devices used to keep the wines at a particular temperature, and for easy dispensing. All the wines and bottles were well laid out and very orderly. If I didn't know any better, I'd say Olivier and Nicolas are a little bit on the "OCD" (obsessive-compulsive-disorder) side, in a good way. Wine cellar. This to me, by far, was the most impressive. They had large cavernous rooms for special wine tasting events or for private parties. Words can't do it justice. Now to the wines themselves, Olivier and Nicolas have an ENORMOUS wine selection. And, they are extremely knowledgeable about the wines. I am not a wine connoisseur, but I know what I like and dislike and for me, basically anything sweet is "interdit". So with this knowledge at hand, Olivier steered me to wines that I would like, and so I stuck to sancerres and rosés. In summary. I'd love to tell you about all the different wines etc. that I tried and reviewed, but that wouldn't be fair to Olivier since I'm not that knowledgeable. Hence, for someone like me who is not a wine connoisseur, this is a great place to be educated because of their extensive wine knowledge. And, if you don't speak French, no worries, Olivier speaks perfect English, having lived in San Diego. For those who are wine connoisseurs, then this is the place for you. You will be challenged and offered some very exciting wines. Because of the size of their wine bar, they are able to store an enormous varied amount of wines and champagnes. The prices are varied and for every pocketbook. And, if you've never been to a wine bar in Paris, this is a great way to start! The wine bar also serves food, but it's more as an accompaniment for the wine, sort of like a food-wine-pairing "tapas". By the way you can also make reservations. I highly recommend Ô Chateau. Tip of the hat to all the reviewers who gave this wine tasting great ratings, you were all spot on! Four of us participated in the "Wine & Cheese Lunch" at O'Chateau in the beginning of October. The tasting included 5 selections (including one champagne) and a selection of meats, cheeses (Cantal, Comte, Sainte Maure de Touraine, Camembert de Normandie, Saint Felicien; I'm no cheese head but for those who are, thought I'd include the names!) & a huge breadbasket. We were led by sommelier, Peirre, who was fantastic. The information he presented would appeal to both the wine novice and the wine aficionado and everyone in between. He took the time to answer everyone's question and you never felt stupid asking something. Actually, he took so much time addressing questions that our session ran over the allotted time. As a result, we kind of rushed through the last wine and cheese pairing. That was our only negative experience. Try to book this tasting on your first day in Paris and book well in advance for space is limited. Do this first especially if you're a newbie to French wines or if you were never a fan (my wife & I were never big fans of French wine but Pierre and O'Chateau may have change that!) because you receive a very useful "Cheat Sheet" full of tasting techniques, French wine regions and other great information. I've had great experiences with O Chateau. Several years ago I did a wine tasting in their cellar, and a champagne cruise on the Seine (which, by the way, pairs PERFECTLY with jet lag--just sit back, drink up, and watch Paris float by. . .). I visited Paris again last month and I took their day trip to the Champagne region. I really enjoyed it. We started at Moet & Chandon, with an extensive tour of their cellars. Then we visited two smaller producers: Lancelot Pienne, and Monmarthe. We learned a ton about the process of making champagne, had a lovely picnic lunch, and drank flute after flute of champagne along the way. Our guide was very knowledgeable about champagne and the region, as well as wines in general. As with past tastings I'd attended at O Chateau, the guide spoke perfect English, and was very friendly. In terms of logistics, they picked up each of us from our hotels for the day trip, and brought each of us back at the end. Our vehicle was a van that seats nine, with a driver in addition to the tour guide. (Which makes sense since the tour guide did some of the tastings with us. Though I don't think she got nearly as tipsy as I did!) The start time is 7:30 a.m., and they kindly brought a selection of fresh-baked croissants and other goodies for the road. This was the biggest splurge of my trip and it was well worth it. read more

Great place for a wine tasting! My husband and I came here last October during our honeymoon trip to Paris and we had a wonderful time, it was fun and educational. O Chateau is an open and inviting place, with a beautiful wine bar to the right as soon as you walk in. The tastings are held downstairs in the wine cellar, a cozy space with stone walls and vaulted ceilings. I thought the atmosphere was perfect for a tasting. Our instructor, was very personable and funny. He was well-versed in all kinds of French wine and the different regions they come from. We tasted three types of wine, one white and two reds. I am not someone who typically drinks red wine, however, the light red Morgon wine was absolutely delicious. I would have purchased a bottle but I wasn't sure if customs would allow me to take it home. I did, however, buy a wine map of France, which was displayed during the tasting. When my girlfriend and I read about this experience, we were really excited to try many different French wines. Instead we got to try small tasting portions of cheap French wine. They even tell you the wine your tasting is worth roughly 16 euros per bottle. We paid 30 euros per person to try sips of three cheap wines. For thirty euros each, I expected either (1) tastings of three very good French wines, (2) tastings of many average French wines from all around the country or (3) at least 3 decent glasses of the cheap French wines. So we felt ripped off. What they did do is explain "how to taste wine", which many of the older people there knew how to do. It wasn't a wine tasting, it was a wine tasing tutorial. We went to O Chateau on a rainy day. We actually walked right past it at first; it's a little inconspicuous. We were seated at the bar. Ordered a cheese plate and a flight of five wines. One of the servers came over and taught us all about the different wines in a really non-snobby way and I very much enjoyed myself. They have an excellent selection of wine by the glass, and the food looked delicious although we didn't stay for dinner. I almost hesitate to write this positive review because I know it will attract the type of people that actually compelled us to leave the restaurant. There was this horrible, drunk, loud, American laughing and acting like a damn fool. Her voice literally hurt my ears. I realize she doesn't live there at that bar, but keep in mind a lot of Americans go there. Isn't it funny how much you realize how annoying fellow Americans are once you're outside the country? It's embarrassing. Anyway! O Chateau is a cozy place to settle in, try some new wines, and learn about them. Our first experience with O-Chataeu was going on one of their Champagne cruises on the Seine. Guillaume was our Sommelier for the evening and he was a fantastic host. We had a private curtained section at the front of the boat. We relaxed, drank champagne, and watched the beautiful sunset, while seeing the beautiful historical landmarks of Paris. La vie est belle! A few days later I participated in the Tour de France of Wine. We all sat in a private tasting room in the cellar of O-Chateau and studied 6 different wines from various parts of France. Pierre was the Sommelier for the night. With his knowledge of wine and humorous charisma, he created and experience that will not be forgotten. I wound up buying a couple of cases of wine at the end of the night. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. When we went to Paris, we mostly just did our own thing, but a wine class was something I felt like I had to do. We had so much fun in our class. I learned so much that I took back and told all of my American friends. I'd definitely take the class again and would highly recommend it it to all my friends who plan on going to Paris. It was educational, fun and entertaining all at once! We bought a bottle of Chardonnay to drink at home which was so delicious. My mouth is watering just thinking about it, and I know I'll never have it again. We also went to the bar another night and loved the wine we had. The bartender is so knowledgeable and definitely helped us find just the wines we were looking for. I never knew I could love Chablis like the one I had there! Oh I miss O Chateau! read more

We did the wine tasting here and it was spectacular! There is a cellar and tasting room downstairs and we learned all about the wines of France. We got to try 5 different wines and they were all paired with different cheese and meats. Really fun few hours! read more

Great dinner experience for a traveling American. The sommelier spoke excellent English and was great at describing the wine and accompanying course. Opted for the 90E multiple course offering which was hooked up by our travel agent. The three courses were probably too much food, but you know how us Americans do! I think this is the perfect spot to have pre-dinner drinks (get the charcuterie/cheese offering - very popular) as well. Friendly crowd and lots of wine lovers.
