My aunt passed away and gave us her Condo on lakeshore, but her being a hoarder and having never renovated in 50 years it needed alot of work. Living in Socal we first shipped many of her things via pod home, but due to time and logistical constraints we couldn't find a construciton contractor (approve by the building) who would do junk removal along with their remodel bid), so we had to do the removal prior to renovation. They were courtesous, professional and communicative. Price is on the high side, but they do offer quite alot like partial donations, disassembly and tracking. I've dealt with junk removal companies before and know the game, over communicate and document everything and you'll be treated properly becuase most removal companies try and find a way to take advantage of the urgency, priority or just treat your home unlike their own. Having cameras and witness' on property definitely help keep everyone honest. They made short work of the large furniture and noting specific directions for certain items that we wanted donated to a local church as well as doing all the admin for the permits for the landfill items. Had I spent more on the shipping I'd spent less on the removal since it's by volume. All in all I'd use them again, but only due to logistics as I'd prefer to pay a construction company a single bid to do it all from removal, demo to the build out (limited by approved vendors by the building) read more

Second time using them. First time was a 10/10 amazing service. THIS TIME? ZERO STARS. Quoted insanely high, moved huge pieces alone and DRAGGED them down the stairs doing damage to the walls and sideboards all the way down. The way they moved things was honestly SCARY. I cannot begin to tell you how great the service we just received from 1-800-JUNK! They were AMAZING and, as I told the two gentlemen that showed up, "They moved like magicians!" They moved our oversized couch out of our 3rd story apartment (no elevator; just a winding narrow staircase) swift and easily! I initially had them come for a few mattresses and some other large items but there was no way I could afford over $1000 to remove Junk! I went on thumbtack and found two guys and they charged me $175 for three bedrooms including 3 mattresses! For the life of me, I don't know why I haven't used this company sooner. My only guess is the minimum $139 turned me away because another junk removal company charged me less for a previous pickup. There were a few cons and some pros. The cons: 1) Although it was supposed to be a no-contact pickup, they don't have a secure online way to pay. So you either have to call and recite your credit card number (which I NEVER want to do) or go outside to scan your card with the pickup driver. 2) The pickup driver got out of the truck and walked over maskless. I backed away at first, but clearly I needed to pay him. I did reach my hand out for the price sheet and talked from a few feet away while he was still maskless. Luckily though, when I went back inside to get a credit card, he'd already put the furniture inside of the truck and put a face covering on when I returned. THANK YOU! 3) Although my time slot was for 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and Customer Service and the driver both confirmed this time, he ended up coming around 3:45 p.m. I was already waiting on another contractor, so it wasn't the end of the world. It would've been frustrating if I had somewhere to go though. The pros: 1) I still thought the price was too high for the bottom of a couch and a table that would barely take up 1/5 of space. They wanted $290 at first, and I soured on the idea. There was no backing on the couch after all. The driver was willing to negotiate. I will always remember their flexibility on that, plus the option to shop around. 2) I asked for a price to properly discard a piece of furniture that could fit into the dumpster but was just too heavy. I blinked. He did it. So very, very impressed. I'd definitely recommend using this company again. Overall, great Customer Service. I regret calling this service. In their website and call person said they will give a free estimate and give "no surprises." well they arrived and estimated $600. After an hour and less than half full truck, they say they will charge double($1200) because it's a lot of stuff/weight. So we got upset and said no, that we'll pay only $300 since its half the truck. So they continue and work even slower. Later they say they'll charge $499 with little more in the truck. As you can see the truck is not full. We stood inside the truck and made them see that the truck is-not full. They said that the truck is not big. Not a good excuse. We offered them better metal shovels. We offered them cold drinks. We offered them to pull the truck closer to the yard so they don't walk further. I want my money back. The online booking system was very convenient and the two workers came when promised. I was pretty much running out of options for the removal of my mattress/box springs and bed frame/headboard, having called the City Sanitation Department, 311, and inquiring with my building's management office in the weeks leading up to my move. After coming up empty handed on all counts, I was pleased to find out that 1-800-GOT-JUNK was not only up to the task but could also come when scheduled (bonus points for being able to dismantle the headboard from the bedframe, a task they tackled uncomplainingly, once I furnished the screwdriver). They ended up hauling away the above items, along with some other random stuff I had assembled. As other reviewers alluded, the estimate is made on the spot; however, I knew what I was getting into and the professionalism and ease of this removal more than justified the price (especially seeing as how my options for the removal of the mattress were narrowing alarmingly to matches and gasoline--never a good idea in a high-rise condo building). read more

However, they quoted me a price that was twice the minimum, for a very small piece of furniture, and when I initially said "no thanks," they had me get on the phone with a "manager" with whom I haggled a new price. It would be far better to have the pricing established upfront. Also, the employees did not take off their shoes nor cover them when they came into my house (on a snowy day), so they tracked in mud and water. The furniture they took apart left debris all over, which they did not sweep up. As a result, I had to clean up after them when they left. For a so-called "premium" service, I'd expect better. The two guys that came to help were transparent ahead of time - looking through the stuff I had to dispose and providing an initial estimate before beginning work. The final cost was pretty close to the estimate. I thought they were conservative in packing up the truck - which ultimately impacts the price you pay. No damage was done to my apartment during this service. Guys were friendly. I would use this company again. If you're unfamiliar with how this service works, they charge by how much volume you are discarding or how much you fill up their truck. Truck is smaller than I imagined; maybe a little smaller than a traditional garbage truck. Their estimate includes labor. They did mention sometimes discarded materials are donated. read more

We have a new bedroom set coming in early next week, for a second-fl. bedroom, replacing a 38-yr-old "starter" set, and no stores' delivery services will remove any old stuff except mattresses and box springs--you're on your own if you have nowhere to store the old stuff or no longer want it. We're in no shape to drag it down and out to the alley ourselves (in the arctic cold) and know nobody else willing & able. Donating old furniture, especially in rough condition, is tougher than it sounds: it can take forever if you post a "come & get it" message on neighborhood blogs; Goodwill no longer picks up; and the Ark & Sally Ann had no openings for weeks. The hospital auxiliary shops want only stuff in salable condition. We needed this stuff gone ASAP, so we called 1-800-GOT-JUNK yesterday. They told us what their average price was and that they take stuff first to donation & recycling centers for repurposing before discarding it as a last resort. They offered to come by the day before the new delivery but I worried that if the price was too high we'd be stuck. They offered to come by this morning to give us an estimate, at no charge should we turn them down. We were given a 2-hr window, and were called as they left their previous stop, with a precise ETA--and they arrived on the dot. Kevin & Theo were great: professional, courteous, neat, and not only quoted a reasonable price w/in the ballpark, they actually asked me (after I paid) if there was anything else in the house I needed them to move! (They moved a heavy recliner for me). Had I known beforehand how smoothly this ended up going, I could have saved myself half a bottle of TUMS. (Just kidding...maybe). My husband and I did some major condo cleaning and furniture arranging this past weekend. Our floor plan is all open, our kitchen, living and dining room are one big open space. We had this big "man" chair that stuck out like a sore thumb in our open layout. I finally convinced my husband to ditch the chair! We took it down 3 flights of stairs and into the alley. We were hoping someone would scoop it up but it sat out back for 2 days. I wanted to get the chair out of our alley before the rain got to it. I found 1-800-Got-Junk online. I saw they had availability for the next day so I booked them. I looked on their website for pricing and I couldn't find anything. I got $10 off for booking online. When the guys came to take the chair away, and they did not have to climb to the 3rd floor to remove the chair (we already did this).... the total came to $114!!! Make sure you get an estimate before you use these guys. They are misleading and I was astonished we had to pay over $100 for them to remove a chair that was already in the alley. They called me at around noon on Saturday and asked if it would be OK if they came a bit earlier, which was fine with me. The dudes hauled away my mattress/box spring/desk/desk chair/broken dresser, and a bunch of other junk I had thrown into a closet for them to take. I just pointed and they took. They were very polite and professional, and were in and out in like 20 minutes (which my movers who showed up at the same exact time were very happy about). Only downside? If I could give this outfit zero stars I would. I had a confirmed junk pickup on Saturday morning (confirmed by phone and email the day before). They called at 11 am on Saturday and told me that because it was the memorial day weekend, the transfer stations were full, and their trucks were full of donated items, and they had no space for my pickup. I was very impressed with the how quickly the customer service rep on the phone was able to schedule an appointment with us for that day and they were even able to come earlier because they were ahead of schedule. We had a lot of stuff to clear out from the garage; a couple of furniture items like an IKEA bookshelf, a high chair, and then the rest was random wood blocks, computer and television cables and a bunch of other random stuff you find in a garage. These guys cleared it all out in 15 minutes. What didn't sit quite right with me was the pricing. I can't help feeling like I was ripped off. I was told on the phone it could be anywhere from $99 - $262 and sometimes $10 or $20 over or under that quote. When the guys arrived the first thing they asked us (me, my sister, and my mom) if we had ever used the service before and we said no. I was quoted $472. I thought that was a lot for what we had but I agreed anyway cause we were desperate to get it removed. But after they finished, the guy said he would "cut me a deal" and said if I tipped him and his associate $50 each in cash, they would only charge me $262.00 The exact same amount I was quoted on the phone in the first place. So we did cause either way it was $160 I didn't have to pay. And then the guy asked me out. So not sure if I am going to use this service again. read more

I would probably use this franchise again, but there are a few things I know now that I wish I knew prior to hiring this service. On a positive note, the crew was able to come out Sunday of Labor Day weekend just within a few hours of when I called which was great. I had a big mess of heavy construction junk from renovating my bathroom and the three men cleared it pretty quickly. My complaints surround their attention to detail and execution. I have a cabinet in my entryway, which is already tight and narrow. They nicked the cabinet, as well as the corner of my wall. These men know what they are doing, so I don't know why they didn't have the foresight to move the cabinet (it's small and light) to make the hallway more manageable. They didn't seem too sympathetic about the damages but took off 10% of the price, though it should have been more. I didn't notice the wall until after they left. Apparently they also accidentally tossed a drop cloth that belonged to my contractors....oops. They also left a trail of drywall throughout the hall in my condo building and initially did not leave the common areas in the condition they were previously. Upon my request, however, they willingly went back through and cleaned up spots that were still dirty. I do sympathize with them somewhat, as my nosy neighbor was getting in their business and chastising them about the mess in the common area while they were in the middle of their job (of course there will be a mess mid-job!)....err, sorry for the rude neighbor! The main guy seemed irritated after getting an earful from my neighbor and also after I requested to drop the price due to damages, but I would have preferred not to be on the receiving end of his attitude. All in all, my construction garbage was removed quickly, it was convenient and I can't complain about the price (yes, it's expensive, but that's the price one pays for this service in Chicago). I just wish they were a little more tidy and careful. I did not intend to damage my property in the process and it could have been easily avoided! read more

So I made appointment for them to come between 5 - 7 today. They were supposed to call me 30 minutes before 5 but they never did. I waited until 6 and decided to call the customer service. 1. First call at 6 - the lady on the phone informed me that the crew would call me very soon. 2. 30 minutes later I still haven't received a call - I called the customer service back. The guy (a different person) on the phone informed me that somehow the crew thought I would contact them (Huh, why would I do that - I was never given their phone number and they are the one who had my phone number all along). That being said, he said the crew would contact me shortly. 3. Another 10 minutes later, they finally called me and the guy on the phone (Joseph) claimed that he tried to call me multiple times and when he tried to leave a voicemail, my VM box was full. Lie, and lie. I never had any missed call from him this afternoon. And while I was on the phone with the customer service earlier, I missed a call from an analyst from work and he was able to leave a voicemail on my phone. And he proceeded to tell me that he couldn't make it because he sent all his people back home. From beginning to end, he made it seem like it was all me - my phone didn't work, I should have called me, etc. I really should have looked at the reviews before I chose them - of course they had the worst ratings of all the junk removal companies from Chicago. Granted, this is for heavy materials (i.e. concrete), but still, seems like a lot. If I were doing another big demo project, I'd just take the time and get a roll-off (runs around $400). read more

Original appointment was set between 1 and 3:00 p.m. but showed up at 4:00 p.m. first price was quoted between $100 and $350 on the phone after explaining it was an entire house full of things (we did recommend 2 trucks). Then after we reluctantly agreed (only because we had everything out of the garage and onto the lawn, they proceeded to tell us they might be only to take 1 truck load due to short staff. The truck pulled up to my house and 2 men were in the truck. I showed him the items especially the generator. The truck was not equipped with any heavy lifting items like a lift or a pulley. I was quoted 3/8 truck or less. Due to how they loaded the truck I was told it was 1/2 truck when done loading. Cost was $100+ more than quoted. Truck was not 1/2 full and would have been less if flooring was stacked along back wall and upwards instead of tossed however it landed longways toward open end of truck. Drywall chunks left on driveway. They did not sweep or clean-up after themselves. Complaint made and I was reimbursed $62 after being told we had to split the difference of their poor quality work. read more

While the two employees were very polite and professional in person, their punctuality left something to be desired. Having planned my day around the two hour pickup window, I was disappointed when Terry and his partner did not arrive at 2:45, as stated during the scheduling call. Then again, the call was also late by more than 30 minutes, so I guess it should have been expected that they would show up a little late. But they were more than a little late. They finally showed up at 4:05. These guys were an hour and 20 minutes late for the pickup. Yes, they had excuses: a long line at the dump and construction on Route 12, both of which were probably true. But I can't help but suspect that the real reason for their tardiness had something to do with the way these guys smelled. For some reason, they reeked of Febreze, and I don't think it had anything to do with body odor or a smelly cab. Frankly, I don't care what somebody smokes or when, but I do care when they are well over an hour late and mess with my timetable. That is NOT acceptable. One more thing, I called 1800gotjunk when the truck was an hour late to let them know about the situation. They said a customer service rep would call me back the next day to follow up. They never did. So the reader will understand why I didn't respond when 1800got junk DID respond to my negative Yelp review. They had their chance and blew it. And I wonder how they can claim they have no record of my service call when my Yelp review doesn't provide my phone, address or full name. They can't!
