His sound guidance directed friends and followers to this new player (as of 7/1/13) at 840 AM on the dial, featuring '50s-'60s rock dubbed "Graffiti Gold," inspired by the movie American Graffiti and punctuated by recorded snippets of legendary DJ Wolfman Jack. To entice listeners further into yesteryears' Top-40 AM milieu, KMPH liberally sprinkles old Johnny Mann Singers jingles (*) pulled from the 1960s Drake-Chenault "Boss Radio" format (e.g. 93 KHJ, Los Angeles, and The Big 610, KFRC, San Francisco). Like it or not, you won't hear live-DJ chatter between songs, reminiscent of Drake's automated "Hit Parade" and "Solid Gold" formats. Commercial interruptions are few, leading to big blocks of music; not that KMPH wouldn't prefer to have more advertisers. A recorded spot urges listeners to spread the word because of the station's tight promotional budget. Another promises NEVER more than 10 minutes of commercials in an hour. In the meantime, some of the program breaks include old public service announcements made by movie, television and recording celebrities. Comprising the initials of San Joaquin Valley broadcast-bigwig brothers Mike, Pete and Harry Pappas, KMPH streams monaural classics and original stereo recordings in "ultra modern stereophonic sound" on its website, kmph840.com. Is it so necessary to hear "Graffiti Gold" tunes from the 45-rpm era in stereo? The station would likely sound most authentic played from a 9V battery-powered portable transistor radio somewhere around Modesto. They either monkeys, morons, or nobody in management listening to or running the station. In addition to this, they play the same traffic and weather reports on consecutive days, so don't plan a schedule based on them. The music and commercials also are on a loop, so unless you like the same ones over and over, it gets old fast.

When shopping for a newspaper to publish a legal notice, the Turlock Journal, also known as the…read moreCeres Courier, quoted me the price of $125 to publish the notice for four (4) consecutive weeks. When I submitted the legal notice to the contact person at the Turlock Journal, Judy Kenyon, my request was denied. I then went back to the courts in an effort to force the Turlock Journal to publish my notice, which the court backed. However, by the time I resubmitted the notice to Judy Kenyon at the Turlock Journal, I was told the price had essentially doubled to $300 at then end of the month of May. Judy Kenyon then had the NERVE to tell me it was still less than the Modesto Bee, as if that would make the crappy business of doubling the quoted price taste like sugar. This process has left me distraught as I constantly watched the pricing to ensure it aligned with what I reported to the court. When trying to verify updated information, nowhere could I find any indication the price had doubled. Additionally, I could not find any direct contact information for anyone other than Judy Kenyon such as a manager or supervisor. There is simply no one to contact to protest the huge price hike. I understand businesses retain prerogative to change prices but this practice feels more predatory than fair. It seems like the Turlock Journal is attempting to price-gouge when they think no one is able to hold them accountable. How can someone be taken to task if you do not know whom to take to task? Now we are stuck with returning to the courts to inform them the Turlock Journal is no longer a viable option due to their shady business practices and that this business clearly does not honor their own pricing quotes. I will go with another local circular as some of them are $200. Had I known I would receive the ol' bait n' switch from this business, I would have petitioned the court for one of the other Stanislaus county newspapers. Not a good look being greedy Turlock Journal!
