LENT 2024: FOURTH FRIDAY OF LENT When this place first opened I used to go to this fish and chip joint about 4-5 times a year as there wasn't a lot of places in the East Bay at that time serving fish and chips. I always loved their fish but their fries not so much; the fish had that light, crispy breading whereas the fries were too soggy. Last Friday there were three places I considered to eat. I decided at the last minute to come to 101 Fish & Chips. I ordered a large combo that consisted of 2 pieces of fish and 4 shrimps along with fries. The fries I had in the past used to look flimsy. The fries I had at 101 Fish & Chips that day were crinkle-cut fries. I like the look of crinkle fries because they looked crispy. At 101 Fish & Chips the crinkle fries were crispy. The fish was moist while the breading maintained that light crispiness without being too oily as sometimes in the past. Then why didn't I give this place a higher rating? First the mozzarella sticks were a huge disappointment. They weren't fully cooked as the mozzarella wasn't melted as I was eating a stick of cold mozzarella stick. Second this place wasn't opened for customers to eat inside but only for take-out. I overheard the owner saying to a customer that place isn't opened to eat in during Lent but will open to dine in after Easter. Like what? This place could make more money on Fridays during Lent especially catering to Catholics who can only eat fish on Lent Friday. Since there are now quite of number of fish and chip joints in the East Bay I'm more willing to try those places. read more

Strictly a take out joint you wouldn't want to eat here but it's the only place to get fish & chips nearby. They have more than just fish & chips here mostly fried foods like Tempura vegetables and shrimp, wonton soup and clam chowder, chicken strips etc. The ladies are super nice. The food is good. I have wondered about this place for a very long time. Wonder no more. Place is open 3 days a week so we thought maybe it's a hidden gem. It's meh. The place is small and clean. The prices are ok. The person who took our order was nice. I ordered the special combo which was fish, oysters, scallops, shrimps, and fries. The scallops were so tiny I wondered what they were at first when I got my basket. The shrimps and oysters are ok. The tarter sauce needs improvements. Its mostly mayo. The fries were obviously frozen and nothing special. The fish was good. Everything was fried just right so nothing was overly oily. I didn't see them offer tap water. I didn't want to risk it and brought my own water bottle. My other friends came later and there were barely many fries in their basket. Odd compared to our serving within the hour we ordered. It's the one place that came up on the map selling pure fish and chips. They didn't answer the phone so headed over to place a pick up an order. There is no dining room available. We barely made it at closing but were pleased to see the door swing open and people waiting for their food. Placed the order and waiting outside we perused the large menu on the window. There are a lot of different choices and combinations. They whip a wide variety of battered fried food well. The food was pretty good. I liked everything being crunchy on the outside. Aside from everything being plain tasting on the inside it wasn't a deal breaker. The only downside was the yucky tartar sauce. I do not like sweet sauce. The only thing negative I can say about this place is that I wish it was open every day. I always place my order in advance. It's always ready to be picked up. The women are always nice and helpful. The tartar sauce is made in house and it's probably the best part of everything. The clam chowder also is very fresh and homemade always warm and very delicious. First time at this place and I must say the negative reviews I read are garbage. It almost turned me away but decided to see for myself. The food is reasonable priced compared to every other restaurant. The food is delicious, and they give you a good amount of chips. I couldn't finish what I had. The fish is crunchy and tasty. Fish to batter ratio is normal with fresh battered fried fish. Prawns are also normal sized battered fried. It's all good. I went around 5pm and no difference in wait time then any other place. The portions are great and are likely to get you very full however due to what I'm assuming is the fish not being fresh it was hard to get over the fishy taste and smell. Love how this mom/pop fish n chip joint is labeled as "British" food. Most fish n chip places out here in the bay are usually owned/operated by Asian families. So it won't be unusual to also find rice plates on their menus. But I never venture in for those. I only come for food immersed in molten grease, and this place does just that, quite nicely I must add. Fish n Chips are super basic here. Pollack fish is used, which is not a high end fish by any means, but it is also so non-offensive that it strictly does its job. The batter is quite sturdy here, it will crack and crunch, which is protocol. You do have to salt and vinegar that mofo, but again that is protocol. Fries are frozen steak fries, they do their job as well. But what gets me to come back is that a 2 piece fish n chips is less than 8 bucks, and will crush that quarterly fried food craving. Tried a combo basket once and found that to be quite satisfying. Fried shrimp was quite nice. Fried Scallop just okay. Fried oyster (breaded instead of battered) was quite appropriate. This basket is only round $9. Also tried their fried vegetables and they are fried to order, so the batter is fresh and the vegetables are piping hot. Zuccini, mushrooms, onion rings and broccoli all lend their unique traits to this sampler. Clean oil is also to be commended. You're not going to get any stellar service from this place but you will get the right product for a good price. Came here 1st time and staff were friendly, only 1 husband & wife running the business. Friendly and attentive. They have regular customers who ordered on the go. Very clean & organized dining area. Food is mediocre and a bit disappointing on the fish. I expected a whole lot more and fluffy, piping hot fish but batter was slightly sweet corn and wheat flour batter and tasted bland. I am picky when it comes to batter, I like a thick batter and I am not really a fan of breaded fish. This place offers that thick batter that I am looking for. It's was ok. We drove across town thinking it was a British Pub type place. It is in a strip mall. There were numerous cafeteria type seats that were tired but clean. There was a family that was finishing up and their debris left all over. No restroom so we had to go down to the Big Lots to wash up. It was 90 degrees outside and the location had no air conditioning. We did not realize this until after we ordered. Too far to take our food to go, but it made it uncomfortable to dine in. The walls are decorated with random British decor and Buddhist things. The fish piece was not as large as I expected but tasted decent. My husband ordered a combo and said it was fine but the tarter sauce was oddly sweet and he saw no cocktail sauce for the shrimp. The salt shaker needed a washing and I asked for ketchup packets rather than the squeeze refillable one available. I wouldn't drive across town but it was ok. I liked they gave us a handy wipe.
