Unfortunately didn't have my phone with me, so I don't have photos of this visit. This cafe and bakery is - ideal. The staff is very friendly and patient when explaining how ordering and seating works over and over again. The kitchen is visible in one of the seating areas, and I was very impressed with how carefully each of the plates were put together. I ordered the ladybird omelette, which is a generous portion of food, BUT there was hardly any cheese in it and way too many cherry tomatoes. They entirely took over the meal - to the point where I had to pick them out. It's a pet peeve of mine when omelettes that are supposed to have cheese in them have hardly any cheese. It's a really nice touch that they were able to give me gluten free toast. They put butter and jam on the side - I didn't have to ask. I also ordered the Irish coffee. Lots of people might like drinks that are super strong at 10:00 am I suppose. I am not one of them. I thought it would be a Bailey's situation, but it was a legit strong coffee drink - so strong that even after adding cream and sugar, I was unable to drink it. Disappointing. My experience was okay, and I left satisfied - but it's not my favorite brunch in Austin. read more

This review pains me to write because I hate to write negative reviews but the truth must be spoke. The restaurant serves the most basic food I've ever eaten in my whole life. This is really unfortunate because it's quite pretty, nestled in a corner or The Driscoll and staff are polite. It also has an open kitchen where you can see the chefs cook and plate the dishes and that's nice. However, I would only come here again if I was locked in and couldn't go anywhere else to eat. I got the traditional eggs Benedict which was honestly one of the most bland things I have ever tasted. The eggs also both had water in them, as in water came out before the yolk, which was a bit absurd and gross. I didn't know it was possible for Canadian bacon to be bland but this one was. The potatoes saved the day though, they were the right texture of slightly crunchy around the edges yet soft to chew and it was seasoned just right. My friend got a ham and cheese croissant and when I asked how he liked it, he shrugged and made a face then stated "it's food I guess... I struggle with finding a balance between complaining and honesty." That was all I needed to know that it was edible but not good enough to ever be ordered again or even recommended. I really love this place, it is attached to the historic Driskill Hotel. It's literally called 1886 because that is when the entire place was built! It must be a good business it's lasted this long :-) We got the bagel and lox, the waffle in the shape of Texas, the steel cut oatmeal, and the breakfast potatoes. The friends he brought into town with us we are vegan, and this is not the most vegan friendly place so please be warned if you are vegan. It has really quality ingredients and would be great for vegetarian, but I would not necessarily go here if you have a ton of diet restrictions. The drinks are really wonderful, it was one of the best waffles I've ever had. I would love to try the eggs Benedict. The only other thing is that while it is quality, the price adds up pretty fast if you're not paying close attention. Otherwise it was a blast! read more

I had some time to spare before one of my tours in Austin so I decided to stop by the Driskill hotel. I saw there was a breakfast place and since I was hungry and had an hour to kill anyways, I decided to grab breakfast. I grabbed the Texas shaped waffle (the cutest thing I've eaten in my life), and it was probably one of the best waffles I have ever had! It was crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, but still cooked. I hate waffles that are soggy and undercooked in the middle but this one was absolutely perfect. It was topped with butter, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, banana, pecans, and whipped cream with a side of maple syrup. Still dreaming of this waffle. I can't have just sweets for brekkie so I also ordered the chimichurri steak. I didn't want scrambled eggs so I asked if I could get 2 over easy eggs, and I wanted my steak medium rare. The first plate I got had a well done steak and an omelet? I let the chef know and they offered to make me a new plate. It took even longer than the first which was weird since it should take less time, because MR. When I got the new plate, the steak was cooked even more than the first one. I am not sure if they thought I said medium well, but either way it was still way too dry. I had to leave asap because I had to make my tour on time so I didn't have time to wait for a new plate. My first visit to Austin started in this beautiful cafe at the elegant historic Driskill Hotel. The place is quaint and casual but in a classy way. You order at the counter sit and wait for the food. Very cute bakery within a historical hotel. The ambiance is cute, with the beautiful tiled floor, the green cabinetry, and the peek through windows to see what the staff is busy creating. I would skip the pastries, while beautiful they are the same quality as any bakery - nothing extra special. Albeit pricey (especially for ordering and paying up front, then having it brought to you), the food was fantastic- really fresh tasting, large portions, we were extremely satisfied. We stopped by the 1886 Cafe and Bakery for some pastries. We got a cinnamon roll and a banana nut muffin. The cinnamon roll is very flaky and has a generous amount of icing on the top. I thought the roll itself was good, but with the addition of the icing, it was very, VERY sweet. My husband loved it, but the more icing the better, in his opinion. This place is very charming! It is a beautiful building with so much architecture. Inside this hotel there is a restaurant that serves breakfast and pastries! You stand in line and slowly move up the line to order at the cash register, while waiting in line you are able to see people working making the various pastries and desserts! I came here specifically to try the Texas shaped pancakes because I love me a good gimmick haha. I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious they were! They had lots of fresh berries and banana on top which I enjoyed. They were cute and tasty so I can't complain. On top of that you get to eat in the lobby area of the Driskill which is a gorgeous hotel. You can also eat in the cafe if you'd like. My boyfriend had a omelette which he didn't love because the eggs were so thin almost like a crepe. Potatoes were yummy. Service was good as well. Can't say enough how great this Cafe and bakery is. The first time we visited Austin we stopped in for breakfast on our way back home to Dallas and we were pleasantly surprised; we could not wait to go back! Everything they serve is fresh and delicious. It is obvious the chefs are above the rest in all thar they prepare. A simple breakfast eggs, toast, potatoes is the best we have had at a cafe or restaurant. The bread, pastries and Texas waffle do not disappoint, you will eat every last bite. Eggs were fluffy and not greasy, potatoes were crisp and flavorful. Everything is excellent! We will go back every time we are in Austin. They don't have "bottomless" mimosas - but the caraf of mimosas was HUGE, so basically the same thing if you're a table for two. Let's just get this out of the way; service is wonderful, food is tremendous, and the cost is way north of food trailer breakfast tacos, but well worth it. I ordered the smoked brisket hash with eggs. I'm sure I embarrassed plus one as I licked the bowl clean. Tangent alert: How did I not know about Yellowbird Salsa? Oh my! Ask for salsa and your server will bring you three bottles of liquid joy. The habanero sauce provided the necessary kick to jump start my morning. Plus one ordered an omelet that carried her through the rest of the day. The side of new potatoes was a welcome respite from the usual hash browns. We did order two spicy bloodies that were well.... spicy, contained vodka, and were properly garnished. I highly recommend that you splurge and take in a Sunday breakfast/brunch at the 1886. This bakery is super popular, especially during weekends, so make sure you come here earlier that 9 am, unless you feel like waiting in a looking line. And then some more for your breakfast. And it's no surprise- the place is unique. It's situated in Driscoll hotel (now belongs to Hyatt Hotels), the very first hotel in Austin. It used to be a place where lawmakers, socialites, society leaders would come to hang out. That's where the grand banquets and inaugurations used to take place. It was hot hot hot! And still is, judging by the amount of people who come here to have a bite over a not so bad cup of Joe. I always get the huge cinnamon bun. When asked if you want to have it heated up - say yes, do yourself a favor! This hotel is vintage and beautiful and also supposedly haunted! I was excited to come here cause I wanted to get Texas shaped waffles. Texas is probably the most proud state putting their flag and shape of state on everything. They were really cute. Perfect for the instagram photo. They were good and came with pecans and fresh fruit which included bananas, strawberries and blueberries. Cute brunch location. Service is ok it is not a waitress but you order at a cash register in the front. We got Texas mimosas and boy were those strong! There were like pure prosecco and like a drop of juice. Ended up chugging it cause running a bit late to head to the airport and man could I feel it. Location is beautiful reminds me of a old vintage titanic outside and the inside of the cafe is like simple modern and beautiful. Lots to do around. Theres no parking but lots of street parking. 1886 is a little coffeeshop/cafe inside the Driskill Hotel on 6th Street. I stopped by with some colleagues for coffees last week, and it was an okay place to grab a coffee. The cafe definitely feels like it's in a hotel lobby, but the coffees were fine and we took them to the lobby by the Christmas tree to enjoy them there. It's a fine stop if you're in the area, but there are better coffeeshop options in the area if you're flexible with time and a slight walk! read more
