At the moment Robert James is a bit of a mess. They sell a variety of items including household…read morecleaning products, toothpastes, kitchen accessories and equipment, and crockery. As I alluded to the presentation of stock in this store leaves something to be desired and does not make for a pleasant shopping experience. I really believe if this shop had a little bit of a revamp and got rid of certain products it could be a great success. For starters they should focus on selling the kitchen equipment and accessories some of which I noticed were extremely good brands, and reasonably priced. Additionally the crockery selection available, though small, is very visually pleasing, and I'd be quite happy to have in my house. If you can get passed the mess, I would really recommend a visit to this store, most of the products themselves are rather good!

Well, I could spend hours in this shop! It is essentially a kitchen wares store so if you need a…read morekettle or toaster or some new cuttlery you can find it here but there is so much more. Right at the back of the shop is a fabulous range of cleaning products and tons of gorgeous baking equipment. They also provide a service by which you can hire cake tins for special occasions and can order in anything that may not be in stock at the time. The staff are very helpful and friendly and they also sell a rage of childrens party items. If you need stardrops, they sell the whole range here too!

When she asks why I don't cook them for myself, my reply is something along the lines of "I don't have a [insert kitchen item here] like you have". This is true, I do only have the basic kitchen equipment, and it's also fear that if I could make it myself, I'd do it wrong. The last time I had this conversation, her response was a rather exasperated "well isn't there a market in Cardiff? You must be able to get one there!" So, to appease my mother, and to finally be able to start cooking my favourite foods, I headed to the market and straight to this stall which I knew very well existed after having bought a jug here in my first year at uni. Pots & Pans sells all the kitchen things you didn't realise you needed until you went back to your mum's house and saw how much better stocked her kitchen cupboards were, and remembered how good a cook she is. Of course, it also sells the things you know you need in a kitchen. And it's all at bargain prices, and is pretty decent stuff too.

They sell pots and pans, silly. Pots, lots of them. And. Pans, lots of those too. Pans to cook food in, to bake cakes, to mix batter. If you ruin pans on the scale that I have been doing of late (absent-minded, iplayer-distracted cook that I am) this place will save you. You can replace ruined pans or stock up for your new life as a student (one pan, a milk pan is best, something completely useless for cooking for more than one person in) or as a new free and single person (many shiny pans to show off with at all the dinner parties you will throw to show how wonderful you are without them). You could also buy gifts for your mate that always cooks for you (HINT)/ your house husband/ your Gran. Pots & Pans, does what it says on the (cake) tin.

They sell a small but useful range of plants, and in spring have rows of containers with bedding plants. My parents have been buying stuff from them for several years, and the quality is usually pretty good (although like all bedding plants, get there early if you want to get the best). The choice of plants is very conservative - pansies, petunias, lobelias, that sort of thing - so it's not really for you, if you are looking for something exotic. They have a small shop selling compost and the usual range of sprays and accessories for gardening. Staff are reasonably friendly and will carry your plants to your car if you need help. NB There's no dedicated parking - customers can park on the main road just outside.

Conveniently named after its location, Broad Street is perfectly situated next door to Barry's Railway Station and just a few minutes' walk from the neighbouring high street. As someone who kills every plant that graces my flat, I don't know much about gardening, so would value any help offered by a sales assistant. Weirdly, I couldn't find anyone here; I walked around the outside area for a bit without anyone asking if I needed assistance - I thought the place was closed if the gate hadn't been opened. Perhaps they were just in the store room... Even if you're not in the market for any greenery, Broad Street offers a range of statues, bird baths, and bird houses, so you can add a bit of character to your garden without getting your hands dirty.
