Nothing to do with the similarly named film studio, 20th Century Flicks is a small independent DVD and video rental shop. It's better than Blockbusters for so many reasons, the chief one being that they have dedicated staff who have an encyclopaedic film knowledge. You can go in, say something along the lines of 'I want that film, I think it was Hitchcock, made 1961 or maybe '64...' and they will usually be able to work out what you're looking for. They also go to the trouble of writing little cards with their opinions of the movies, which I think is a nice touch. Their library is as comprehensive, I've always been able to get what I want and kept up to date. They do a good line in ex-rental, so it's worth going along even if you don't rent much. Walking past this morning I saw Atonement on DVD for £5, a bargain. 20th Century Flicks is a good place to find a film and has a bit more of a personal touch to it, which I always appreciate. read more

This is quite simply the best video rental shop in Bristol. Unfortunately I live a bit too far away now, but I used to go here all the time when I was in Clifton. Why? Well, it's independent for one, which is a bonus in any walk of life. Also, the staff know what they're talking about and are all encouraged to write cards and lists recommending their faves new and old, with art house and cult hits very much to the fore, not just the latest crap from Hollywood. It's a little bit expensive but you certainly get what you pay for. And if they don't have what you want on their heaving shelves, ask at the desk as they can dig pretty much anything, however obscure, up for you from their back-up warehouse. read more

Shall we rent a DVD? Said nobody outside of Clifton for at least 3 years! The fact 20th Century Flicks is still going is testament to their service; these guys know their stuff! Ask the staff for any type of recommendation and they'll reel off 5 or 6. I went a couple of weeks ago and they asked me what films I liked (cringe!) and gave me recommendations based on that. They have lots of foreign, cult and old movies without being all 'Blockbuster' and having row after row of the top 10 new releases. A bit like the PDSA they 'never put a healthy DVD down' and treat their collection as a DVD library. They really are passionate about movies! The shop itself is really small and feels more like you're in a movie geeks living room. They are open 7 days a week and give you 7 days to return anything you hire. This is an awesome little independent video shop (It'll always be video shop, never DVD shop) that I seriously hope is going strong for years to come. I think it will! read more

The very fact that 20th century flicks exists is a god send, it's the only video store within walking distance for most of the people who live in the top half of Bristol (even though other video stores did exist, they have all closed down now, which can only be a testament to the service 20th Century Flicks provides). For this reason they could have got lazy, but they haven't, they provide warm friendly service and are loyal to their regular customers. Whatever your knowledge, tastes or understanding of films they will give you the time of day, ask your opinion, advise you, give you honest opinions and recommend films you've never heard of. They are obviously passionate about film and love what they do. They even gave us a small discount once on a film because we didn't enjoy it! It's like they felt guilty that the film was rubbish! It's the type of service that only small independent businesses can provide. The locals love this shop and it's been around for a long time for good reason. Small businesses like this one deserve all the support they get! If anything the service they are providing is too popular, if that's possible, and on occasion the top titles aren't available until the next day. But they will always reserve films for you; all you need to do is ask in advance. read more

This independent rental store shows a knowledge of films and a taste for cinema that I challenge you to find in any chain. It is refreshing to find a media retailer that actually thinks about what they put on their shelves and not just lining their walls with mindless rubbish that has a large publicity budget. I've been a member of this place for more years than I can recall. Independent company 20th Century Flicks is the perfect illustration of why practically every other video library is going down the pan. Whereas your Blockbusters etc stock every movie there is from the last year (including all the terrible ones), 20CF have virtually every film ever made that was any good, leaving out most of the bad ones. They have a huge stock of movies, covering just about everything you'd ever want to see, and a rather quaint, dated computer system you can use to see if things are in stock. They only seem to employ film geeks as well. Ask them any movie-related film you want, and they'll have an answer. Again, a refreshing change from your average library. Worth joining even if you live the other side of town. Great stuff - all shops should be like this. read more

This place can't do enough to get you the exact movie you want. In an age of downloads and DVDs-by-mail (where a specific movie might take months to arrive), the best thing about this shop is the following dialogue: * Me (walks right up to the counter): "Have you got ____?" (insert old, rare, classic or foreign movie here) *20th Century staff: "Sure...... (reaches behind into massive archive of filed DVDs and finds it in seconds)......here you go. That'll be £3. Drop it in any time before 10pm Friday". * Me: "......cool". The ONLY reason I can't give it five stars is because the ceilings are cranium-worryingly low. Housed in a cellar type space in Richmond hill the shop specialises in catering for all tastes from horror to classic, arthouse to comedy. It holds literally thousands of films, if not in the shop then in the nearby warehouse from which they can be retrieved at 24hrs notice. Run for and by film buffs, the shops website and the catelogue give extensive details on each film and personal reviews as well. Also has occasional sell-offs in the store for reasonable prices. read more

This quite frankly is the greatest video shop I have ever had the privilege of being a member (ok...so my girlfriend was the member). They have such a wide range especially non US films. I rented every Studio Ghibli film I could get my hands on from here. Staff are excellent and the shop itself has tons of character. read more

When I was a kid, video shops were pretty cool as the giant blockbuster obsessed stores like Blockbuster (not an ironic name) hadn't yet taken over, so the little independent video shops were ten a penny. Sadly this is longer the case today, apart from one sacred little video shop in Clifton called 20th Century Flicks. The reason why this place keeps going and shows no signs of shutting up shop or waning under the unbearable pressure of the big boys is simple. It has loads of great dvds and videos that you can't find in the soulless chain stores. There isn't an obsession with stocking row upon row of the same terrible movie that has only just come out. Instead they stock great films of all kinds and from all eras. Try walking into a Blockbusters and look for Treasure of the Sierra Madre. No chance. read more

This place kicks ass. It's like a cave full of every single dvd you can think of, and many many more that you can't. The staff are really friendly and are great at recommending something if you're overwhelmed by choice, and there's a wall devoted to mini reviews and recommendations. 20th Century Flicks is not your ordinary or random video shop. It does not look like a stereotypical crusty one with a rubbish selection of films. Instead, its' small exterior is seething with a diverse range of films, TV shows and foreign language films on DVD and VHS formats. A week of boredom was about to be my fate in September 2007 until a trip to 20th Century Flicks gained me access to my favourite TV Show, Entourage for only £2 per disc for 2 nights (inclusive of membership). It might look small, but 20th Century Flicks will blow your mind. They have a neverending collection of DVDs divided by genres, and their section on TV series is fabulous. The staff are helpful, kind and knowledgeable. What gives character to this amazing place is the staff recommendations on the wall, something that I find really helpful. Their horror section is probably my favourite, but they have an incredible selection of classics and foreign films too You might spend hours in there trying to decide what film you want to watch! For those of us that like to think we know our film history, there's 20th Century Flicks. categorized by director, alphabetically, by country, by release date - its the sort of place you can go into not knowing what you want to watch and come out with three dvds wondering why on earth you've never seen them in your supposedly fulfilled lifetime.
