I came here to celebrate for my graduation, and I was looking for a place that was fancy but also had great food. 22 Merrill was the perfect in between. The outside and inside were beautiful and I loved the ambiance. I came with my family and we had kids with us and even then everyone was able to choose something they liked from the menu. The service was also fantastic, our server was nice, polite, and very attentive to our every need. The food was also delicious. Super pleased with my dining experience here! This was kind of a random choice for my friends and I but I'm glad we went out of the way to come here. They have a really nice outdoor dining area and it was great weather so overall it was really pleasant. Their drink options did all sound great but we weren't drinking during our meal. My friend and I split the half dozen oysters as an app and they asked if we would like west coast or east coast or mixed. We went with mixed and it was delicious! They serve it with dry ice for presentation purposes which is kind of cool. The oysters weren't grainy at all and tasted yummy. For my meal I had the Birmingham salad which was honestly one of the best salads I've had in a while. It was served with shrimp and calamari as the protein. The avocado really added a lot of substance to the salad as well. It comes with a Dijon vinaigrette. Actually SO delicious. I would eat this every single day if I could. The shrimp was marinated/seasoned perfectly and the calamari was breaded where it wasn't too heavy or greasy or anything. A great complement to the greens. Loved the Gorgonzola in it as well. It was pretty pricey overall but I guess that's what you are going to get at a fairly nice restaurant in Birmingham. read more

Really interesting place. Front room has a large bar and was packed. We were seated in next room that was large but was 2 rooms. Our waitress was busy but good. Started with the calamari that was good and tender. Everyone was happy with their meal. Lamb chops were cooked to proper temperature. Shrimp scampi was tasty and large. Pan roasted salmon was a hit. A group of us were here for a birthday with a reservation of 7 adults with an eleventh month old baby. Here are the pros and cons: Pros: waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable, able to get the attention of a lively group with different tastes and personalities, and even told us a story about a mocktail she created! The birthday girl liked her mocktail :) The decor was nice, and modern ambiance, baby enjoyed all the mirrors haha Cons: food was not worth the price, nothing bad about it but also nothing special. We ordered a few appetizers for the group and they were also pretty good. Some of servers did not speak a word even when told "thank you", idk if this is a thing. When we were about to be seated, there were not enough chairs and tables for our group and had to ask to add another table and chairs, which was not a great start since it was a reservation and they were expecting us. We were also seated kind of right by the kitchen and felt in the way. There was more space on the giant blue booth and that would not have felt in the way but idk if that is reserved for anything specific. I had the butternut stuffed shells, which were unexpectedly spicy, more than I would prefer. I was looking forward to the old fashioned, but I've had better. You do get two cherries which is nice. My husband had the General Tso broccoli, which was too salty. I am not sure why I keep giving 220 Merrill chance after chance but this place just isn't worth the hype. Sure the ambiance is nice but the food misses the mark and the prices are not worth it. Our almost $30 salads were drowning in dressing and lacking in the uncharged protein. The coffee at brunch was undrinkable. Our server kept calling us "the ladies" like what do the ladies want to drink, what are the ladies celebrating. It was so very strange. Our server also seemed unknowledable about gluten free menu items and had to keep coming back to correct the information. The tables are literally jam packed on top of each other which has to be a servers nightmare and as a guest it felt intrusive. I think I am done giving them chances. read more

Booked a reservation of 4 for my wife at 220 for Mother's Day brunch. We were seated right away. We were traveling with our toddler son and baby son who is 8 months. They were very accommodating to us to seat us in a location where we could fit his car seat comfortably. The service was fantastic. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu. My toddler ordered the chicken fingers with fries which he liked. We ordered the banana foster pancakes for the table to share. They were massive and delicious. My wife ordered the shrimp scampi which she liked. I ordered the 220 western omelette which was fantastic. This is a very bougie vibe type of place so I don't know how often we will frequent but will keep in mind for future. I recommend you give it a try. read more

It was extremely loud to the point where we couldn't have a conversation so I asked to be moved to the back room and it was much better. The restaurant was very modern and had a beautiful ambiance. Our server was very attentive. My favorite thing was the pear/Gouda/Brussels salad. Everything was cut up very small which I really appreciated; it cut the fibrousness of the Brussels and each bite had a good mix of all the ingredients. The short rib was very good but it was a little fatty for my liking. I liked the mashed potatoes but the veggies were missing something. The steak tip pappardelle was really good as well, the flavor was surprisingly sharp though. We finished with the tres leches cake, it was huge but probably still a little overpriced. I wish I got his name to put on here but he was so attentive to us despite it being really busy, it was the best service we've had in as long as I can remember. We had the tuna tartare and calamari which were both excellent. I had the chicken parmigiana which was delicious. Moist chicken in a crispy crust served with a delicious pasta. Wonderful! My wife had the burger which she loved. We were too full to have dessert. I thought about giving 4 stars because the place was really loud, but that's not on them. Don't wanna say what it tasted like, disgusting Service was good, waiter was very kind. Some of the food tasted spoiled and over cooked. I've had this place bookmarked for some time now. I only had takeout in the past. I celebrated my birthday here for brunch. It's nice in the inside. I had a party of five. We received good service. I enjoyed my breakfast I ate everything but the bread it was a little hard. The fuzzy bubbles drink was good. I'll have to come for their dinner. I really enjoy 220 Merrill. Every time I go, I normally get the pasta, shrimp scampi, and I've also went for brunch. It's not overly pricey, it's pretty fair for the quality of the food and the ambience. It's a beautiful restaurant, the color scheme is gorgeous. read more

Have come here several times for occasions and also work meetings. The interior is lovely with ample seating. It can definitely get very loud sometimes! Food wise there are lots of options, my friends love the Creekstone steaks. Most recently I opted for the Branzino which was done very well - would get this again! The potatoes it came with were also very crispy. My friend ordered the chicken Parmesan which was very good, and of course we all devoured the truffle fries! Now, nestled right in the epicenter of this modern day Garden of Eden its crown jewel: 220 Merrill Street Restaurant. Eating at 220 Merrill was akin to being a member of the Capitol in the Hunger games. A feast of unimaginable decadence, though without the sadistic murderous games for entertainment. The only murdering going on at 220 Merrill Street is what you and your beautiful gullet will do to dish after dish that they shepherd to your table. And speaking of shepherd's, George was our server, though King George III would be more apt to describe this man given his stature and presence. His signature play of the night was recommending not 1, but 3 dessert choices- the Carrot Cake, the Tres Leche, and the Cheesecake. Have frequented at 220 for almost 10 years now, and sad to say we haven't been going nearly as much anymore. Used to go to here at least once or twice a week with my friends and the service, the food, the ambiance, everything was basically perfect. I understand the overall vibe has changed, but I truly wish it went back to what it was. The food isn't anything special anymore, it used to be great to come in and find new seasonal items. I will say that the food is still good though, the desserts are great. My biggest issue is truly with the lack of quality service. Me and family used to rave about just how nice the staff was, but most of the people there now are nowhere near. They're just there to get you in and out. Could be there on a dead Tuesday evening or the busiest of Saturday evenings and it's just the same unfortunately. You can't even hold a quality conversation because of how loud the music gets pretty early on in the evening. Still a good restaurant but it is what it is. read more

I ordered the Eggs Benedict with a coffee. The coffee mug was a very generous size. The Eggs Benedict was terrible. I cut into the eggs and the white was mostly clear/white cloudy liquid in both eggs. I asked the server for eggs that were properly cooked. Through the server, the cook asked if I wanted them over easy, over medium, over hard. Then asked what temperature I wanted? Not really thinking this described a poached egg, I replied I wanted more solid whites and liquid yolks. The second try had eggs that had solid yolks, like a hard boiled egg. I didn't want to wait for a third plate, so I accepted the hard eggs. Server was apologetic and did her best to correct the first situation. The cook needs a lesson in poached eggs. read more
