The staff members on Christmas Eve 2022 were all fairly busy, so no help was offered. The person who checked me out on my first ever visit to thus store was not too friendly. Most items were organized & in stock. It's not anywhere near as big as the Bass Pro Shop I used to go to, but I suppose Lubbock is lucky to have one. Costco (including a gas station) & several other shopping opportunities are nearby. So is easy access to Loop 289.

On November 21, 2024 I was immediately greeted by a very nice gentleman. While they did not have the ammo I wanted in stock, he clarified how ordering is processed from their website. Came to Academy Sports to get a Texas Longhorns sweatshirt. I was absolutely SHOCKED that they did…read morenot have ANY here. There were a handful of Texas shirts but no sweatshirts. There were GENEROUS options for Texas Tech and Texas A&M. After this disappointment, I decided to wander around the store and heck out what else they had to offer. I found some woman's mesh shorts for $7.99 that I was SUPER EXCITED FOR! (The pair of Champion ones I was wearing have to be about 20 years old and the elastic is so loose.) I was so ready to retire these and get some new ones. Only problem... so there were 2 styles: 6"mesh basketball ones (with a draw string) and "shortie" mesh shorts (shorter in length and no draw string). I decided that the "drawstringless" ones were more comfortable and searched the rack for my size. Literally ONE pair out of the hundreds of shorts in a plethora of colors. ONE PAIR. ONE LOUSY PAIR. I got them but REALLY would have appreciated more options. I don't know if they were changing over stock or what but there were tons of pallets of merchandise in the aisles. It was a little difficult to maneuver around. As for the staff... definitely not very friendly or helpful. The girl in the fitting room literally said 2 words to me and then continued to interact with another worker WHO WAS TRYING ON STUFF. Then, waiting in line, there was ONE register open (and 4 workers behind the registers). Ok? There was a customer service register open but the girl was chatting with another employee while I stood waiting my turn for a few minutes. Finally, who calls me up? The customer service girl. Couldn't she have called me up and not had me wait. THEN while she was checking me out, she was still having the conversation with the other employee instead of having any interaction with me... the CUSTOMER! Very bizarre. Just felt like the workers were more interested in chatting with other employees than helping customers. So the 3-Stars is because it is good that there is a sporting goods store here in Midland. Not happy with the selection of merchandise or the customer service.

She did not reply with the usual, " not my department, I'll call someone", no, she laughed and said she wouldn't let me do that, I was a customer, so I found what I wanted, she offered further assistance and she was so helpful when her coworker walked up I told him how she helped me find my balls and how happy I was. Dynasty, is the definition of what customer service should be. She found my balls, offered more help, when I saw her again later, she smiled huge and asked if I was still okay or if she could help me further. How cool is that? Totally unexpected from an Academy employee. Thank you Dynasty! Keep up the great work!!!

This is one of my most favorite stores in Lubbock and one of the few keeping me sane around here…read more We might be far from the mountains but coming here makes me feel like they're close by. While I'm not huge on fly fishing and there's not much of it to be had close by, about a quarter of the store is dedicated to it. You can get rods, reels, line, flies, and a whole getup for the sport right here. Not to mention, if you bump into the owner he's happy to chat and provide some pointers. Another quarter of the store is dedicated to hiking and camping. There is a very limited selection of tents, sleeping bags and pads, general camping supplies, and quite a few backpacks. They supplied me with a couple items for my 2023 AT hike, but what they have is generally aimed at car campers. The remaining half of the store is all clothing and shoes from the most popular outdoor brands. Outdoor Research, North Face, Patagonia, Buff, Goodr, and so many others. I imagine they're making most of their money from people who mostly just want to look outdoorsy. Which is fine from my perspective. They are always well staffed with college students. Almost seems like there are always more employees than really necessary in here. Nevertheless, I usually end up popping in just to have a look around whenever I drive by. I honestly rarely buy anything mostly because I don't need anything. But the ambiance always makes me feel at home.

I appreciate the co-owner's professional and respectful response to my original review. I can order ammo online or go to a gun show easy. But, I prefer to buy local and that's why I checked this shop out in the first place. Carma Guns's layout is simple. Clean. Easy to navigate PLUS they had good prices on a variety of items so... I will be stopping by here soon even if to see what's new, especially after the owner's reply!
