A friend and I are having the craving for Mexican, so we find a place we haven't been to. I ordered two steak enchiladas with red sauce, and was satisfied. Unfortunately, besides good service and fine food, there wasn't particularly anything that gave me the impression of something unique, but I will withhold any pointed opinion until I revisit for more on their menu. This used to be an ok to a little above average breakfast joint...however, after my latest experience, I will NEVER be returning. I ordered a mexican skillet, which on the menu, clearly stated includes Chorizo and Steak. Upon receiving the skillet, I noticed there was zero steak in it. I politely asked the waitress who then said, oh no, there's chorizo in it, which is a mexican sausage. I then responded that I knew what chorizo was, but there is no steak in it which the menu clearly said there was supposed to be. She then proceeded to ask me for my plate so she could show it to the manager, cause if she didn't, they wouldn't believe her. So I agreed and watched her argue with the cook/manager...and then come back to my table and tell me that they no longer include Steak in the skillet I ordered. Which again, I politely said, that's fine, but it was advertised on the menu as having steak, so I would still like my steak. At this point, she kinda just stared at me, like too bad. So I had to ask again, can I please have my steak that was advertised. Again, she took my plate away with a menu this time, and pointed out on the menu arguing with cook/manager again. After a short display of aggression between the two, the waitress came back with my plate with some steak just thrown on top of the meal. After all this, there was no apology from the waitress, nor did the "manager" ever come by to say that he was sorry for the miscommunication. Everything felt like it was my fault for wanting what was advertised on THEIR MENU. Worst experience ever. Will never return, avoid this place like the plague. read more

The owner is not the head cook that comes out from time to time to chat with customers. It's actually owned by to non spanish owners whom do things like advertise they have outdoor seating and it's a couple of second rate outdoor tables with broken umbrellas. Don't blame the nice hard working family that manages and runs the place for the ridiculous prices or run down decor and you can find the owners names on several State of Illinois websites as public information. I rarely give three stars as I don't feel it helps my fellow Yelpers in deciding if a place is good or not. However, for the 3 Amigo's I'll make an exception as it is truly in the middle of the road. As in, I've had better and of course I've had a lot worse. The service is average and there is nothing on the menu to make this place unique. Nor is the quality of the food over the top. With that said, if you are looking for a quick, decent meal then this place will do. If I was really in need of Mexican fair, and I was in the area, yes, I'd probably come here. We went here after reading the Yelp reviews and unfortunately we can't agree. First of all, chips and salsa should be free. Enough said. Next, our waitress was about as happy as a funeral. Third, the prices were high, but we had high hopes. Those hopes were dashed as our plates came out and it was like WWII rations or something. For example, a quarter cup scoop of rice, same for the beans. The Man of the Place ordered Carne Asada his favorite, and asked for the onions to be grilled. The waitress said, it doesn't come with onions. If you want them, they are $3 extra. WiTAF??? No thanks. Everything tasted fine, but the bang for the buck was definitely NOT there and we won't be going back. Oh and that was with just water to drink. read more

For whatever reason, I did not expect this place to be a sit-down restaurant...maybe because it was a hot dog place before? Regardless, we arrived and were offered a booth. Note, if you are short you need to rethink the booth. The seats are very squishy and the table will be way higher than you are comfortable with! We ordered bistec and a chicken burrito with guacamole. Chips and salsa came out with our drinks. Entrees were good, but not too thrilled with the rice. Service was good. Drinks and refills arrived promptly. Would return to try something else off the menu. read more

Even with it being in the LV for awhile, I still hadn't taken the time to eat here. I should have stopped sooner. Wait service was immediate and she was very good on taking modifications to our order and delivering the food quickly. Foods eaten were quesedillas, beef flautas, and a steak burrito. The beans here are light on the lard and have pretty good taste to them and the rice is pretty flavorful, but these are served in pretty small portions. Flautas were hot and the beef used had good flavor. The steak used in the burrito wasn't the typical tiny grilled cubes that most places serve. It was actual pieces of beef with very good flavor. A nice change to the typical prep. Overall a nice experience. Prices are average and the food is good, so we'll be back! read more

First off, let me say that after our first visit this morning we love Three Amigos. We read some good reviews on Yelp and thought we would give it a try. We are always nervous about Mexican food reviews here in Chicago (we are from the SW originally). Most of the "rave reviews" that we see are for bland food that tastes like it came out of a can. In any case, that is not the case at 3 Amigos. OK, so on with the review. My wife had Huevos Rancheros and loved them. Her corn tortillas and beans were very flavorful and freshly prepared. The eggs were cooked well also. I had the Chilaquiles with chorizo, rice, beans and eggs. The Chilaquiles were really, really good - loved their red sauce and queso. The chorizo was spicy and tasted great. The beans and rice were solid accents and they cooked the scrambled eggs correctly, too. Can't wait to go back and try some of the other items on the menu. read more

I was charged $10 for plain ala carte medium chicken burrito on carry out and asked the cashier if the prices went up bc last time I ordered the ENTIRE dinner sized and it was only $7 plus that included suiza (cheese and sauce)too! We go there for breakfast often. The food is pretty good. However, now they charge $2 for sharing a plate at breakfast. We can't eat all the food and it doesn't heat up well. It is usually almost empty and now they are chasing their loyal customers away. BTW we leave a 30% tip. So the waitresses and dish washers are missing out and wonder who get the extra $. read more

This is by far the best Mexican food west of 45 in Lake County. The place is a little hard to get to westbound on grand you have to turn around at the sanctuary apartments to get in but please do! They serve beers too. The owner Juan is a great chef and cooked at some of lake countys most popular restraunts prior to opening his own. I have had nothing but good experiences from this place. Service has always been very friendly and responsive. Food has always been top notch as well and I have never had anything I didn't like on the menu. As for everyone complaining about prices here.. I'm not sure what they are talking about because I have been to darn near every Mexican restaurant in eastern and central lake county and prices at 3 Amigos are comparable to just about every other Mexican restaurant. Among all the other places I went to this weekend for Mother's Day; I decided to take my family to this local "Mexican" restaurant. First thing I noticed walking in here was "oh, Latino staff, that's a good thing." Then we met our waitress, Ana, who rubbed off the wrong way. She was demanding and snappy. Once we sat down and reviewed the menu, I noticed they had burgers and sandwiches in a "Mexican" restaurant, lol. Not so authentic. Then I asked for Tacos Al Pastor - they didn't have any. Ana quickly let me know they didn't have most of the authentic food Mexicans are used to. No chips, no posole, no barbacoa, no milanesa. I felt like getting up and leaving but decided to stay because we were already seated and looking forward to eating. Their horchata was good but their options of food were not authentic and very limited. I ended up ordering their enchiladas de mole. The enchiladas alone were good but their mole wasn't. I would switch their choice of mole to Telolapan instead. I'm not reviewing this as a bad place to go to but if you're looking for an Authentic restaurant... try somewhere else cause this isn't authentic at all. read more

Sunday was my third visit to 3 Amigos. The first two times were actually enjoyable but this past visit was bewildering to say the least. We arrived around noon and the dining room was only about ¾ full. There is (as of Sunday 3/4/2018) no "please wait to be seated" sign nor designated waiting area so after a minute or two of awkwardly standing around waiting for a hostess/server, we seated ourselves to an empty table. This was apparently a HUGE mistake. Please note, despite the lack of a sign, DO NOT seat yourself. At this time we still attributed the lack of a greeting from anyone to the fact that they were a little busy. The past two times we were the only customers. No big deal, we were thrilled to see word of mouth was catching on (the food is actually decent). Another 10 minutes pass as numerous staff members from servers to busboys hustle past our table attending to other guests. At this point we started to wonder what was going on as the place was now only about 1/2 full at best. We even heard other tables whispering to one another as to why we were still being ignored (rather embarrassing to be honest). Another 5 minutes pass and at this point there are several servers just standing around and chatting with one another. It was understood that we were not going to be served. My guest and I were appropriately dressed, not causing a scene, politely conversing with one another, etc. The only rationale we could think of for being completely ignored is the fact that we sat ourselves. Our pondering came to an abrupt end as soon as a family of 4 walked in and were IMMEDIATELY greeted and seated to a now open booth. In fact, 2 additional servers hustled over to the booth to poor glasses of water and provide menus. This was no longer coincidental and it was obvious they were sending a message. I calmly got out of my chair and started to walk out. This blatant disregard to our business was understood and I wasn't going to waste my time scolding some manager who clearly doesn't give a **** anyway. My guest was adamant about speaking to someone though. She calmly asked the gentleman behind the bar (who was barking orders - presumably a manager) if there was a "please wait to be seated" sign and was told no. She then followed up by asking why we were completely ignored and she did not receive an answer. He simply said sorry, smirked, and mumbled something to one of the available servers (who had passed our table at least 10 times). The server laughed and started to gather a couple menus from the nearby stack as slowly as possible. My guest finally took the hint and calmly followed me out. We both sat in the car for a moment before leaving just to confirm that actually happened. To be honest, I'm still not sure what to make of it. The food isn't bad so I sincerely hope the service improves. In the meantime, PLEASE WAIT TO BE SEATED. You have been warned. read more
