First time here, we pretty much liked it. No issues with the food, we did get to experience the infamous bartender rudeness, but it didn't really affect us fortunately. I got the small Caesar salad with steak, $7.99 was a decent price to add this amount of steak to the salad, but $6.99 for a base small Caesar seemed a bit much, it was basically a $16+ salad with tax. My friend got the onion soup and she enjoyed the Irish twist, and another friend got what I think was fish chowder, no complaints there. The setup of the restaurant is strange, it looks like they definitely have room for more seating should they choose. The beer menu could be more extensive, but we would come back again. read more

Tried this the other day, and overall it was just average. Some good things are the portion sizes, drinks are good and they have live music on Fridays which I love. Couple downfalls though, the service was really really slow, it took forever to get a drink or our orders in. Where we were sat was kind of in a weird spot where you cannot see the music and you are right in the front when you walk in. Also I got the fish tacos and they were sooo salty. My daughter had a softball game in the area so we stopped into 38 West on a whim. Parking was plentiful and upon walking in, our first thought was that it was nicer inside than we were expecting, like it had just been remodeled. There was a fresh scent and it seemed well kept. Our waitress let us know the specials. Both were mushroom appetizers, which I thought was a little strange. She also said they were out of mashed potato, which bummed me out a little cause I was going to get the baked haddock with mash. We decided to order a kids butter pasta, chicken finger dinner and chicken Alfredo pizza. Once everything came out, my son was putting Parmesan on his noodles when I noticed mold in the jar. The waitress was apologetic and took the cheese and dish away. I asked if we could order a cheese pizza in its place. I strayed in on my Alfredo chicken pizza. I wasn't crazy about the crust and the few couple slices each had some chewy bites of chicken that I had to take out of my mouth. My daughter seemed happy with her tenders but the fries were so thick, they didn't have any crisp to them- just large slices of potato. We got boxes and asked for the cheese pizza "to go", as well as our check. To my surprise, the pasta was still on the bill. When I pointed that out to the waitress and suggested they be taken off (due to the moldy cheese), she said she'd need to ask the manager. After a bit of a discussion between the two of them, the noodles were removed, but I thought that should have been a no brainer. Locals know this restaurant as Sullie's however it has been Re-vamped as 38 West. My 21 y/o son picked this place to eat based on Irish Culture, an item on the menu "Irish Shepard's Pie". We were all excited to check this "new to us" restaurant out. We sat for a night of no drinking and just unwinding from a day of heavy lifting an moving. Non-alcoholic beverages are; Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Starry, Lemonade, Unsweetened Tea. We chose Starry, Lemonade, and Water. We were offered a high top table in a beautiful room full of televisions. On a night of Celtics, Bruins and plenty of sports we had to ask and wait to get a game on. For a sports pub & grille I was really shocked to have to ask for a television to be put on. Not even one was on in the area. The barkeep was often loud and rude to the staff. When our extremely friendly waitress came over. We hit it off right away. I really wish I could have remembered her name. She reminded me of a southern belle. We wanted to order Two Irish Shepherd's Pie's! FAIL! At 6pm they were fresh out! WTF! One of us settled for a Reuben the other two ordered Limerick Chicken, and one side Seafood Chowdah! I was advised the Reuben was amazing. The Seafood Chowdah, if you are from here our Chowdah is always thick and scrumptious. This was so watery I needed a fork to eat it. The Limerick Chicken..... Cole Slaw was great! Mashed Potatoes were chunky and watery. Gravy was thick out of a jar not warm. Chicken had just the most moist and delicious skins.....the dark and white meat was so dry. I was really disappointed however I chocked it up to just maybe because I was in the mood for Irish Shepard's Pie. Come to learn the barkeep is the Owner and the Daughter to the prior owner of Sullie's. If so, why was so many things out of stock? Why such a limited amount of non-alcoholic beverages? Why so bitchy? Then came dessert - I mean this is a new to us place we have to give it our all! Dessert Menu included; Apple Pie - wait we are out of it. Chocolate Cake wicked dense - Cheesecake with Caramel - only 2 slices left Probably other options however the sounds of "we are out, we are down to...." Was getting old. We had 2 cheesecakes and a dense Chocolate Cake. We did appreciate the Guinness Decor and some Irish appeal. Really wished the menu was fully available. Prices were very reasonable. We might try this place again another time. Just might not be on a Saturday night when your best employees should be there. Tried to eat local, ma and pa, gotta do better. read more

Went close to their opening week and was impressed. Menu is probably pretty dynamic this early on but looked well thought out. Food was higher quality than woody's and a tad more expensive, but you certain get what you pay for. We got the stuffed haddock and Shepard's pie. The baked haddock dish was well put together with an addicting seafood stuffing spread. Getting a fork full of sautéed veggies, haddock, and mashed potatoes was the ultimate treat! I went to 38 West tonight and had an absolute blast! Not only did we walk into a professionally decorated interior, but we were greeted with smiling faces and a warm atmosphere. We were seated promptly and served in a very timely manner. The food absolutely knocked my socks off! I had the Stuffed Mushrooms while the rest of the group got the Nachos, Irish Onion Soup and Buffalo Chicken. You could tell in the quality of the food that passion was put into it. Everything tasted fresh, well seasoned and came out hot! Truly a tasty meal that will for sure make me go back! If I could give negative stars I would. We walked in to a half full dining room, waited 10 minutes for the server to take our drink order. Ordered fried haddock, chicken tenders, Shepard's pie, and a burger. We waited over an hour and our food never arrived. We watched over four parties that arrived after us receive their food. Then, when we finally said we were fed up and wanted to pay for drinks and leave we were met with, "They are plaiting the food now." We then waited five more minutes before our sever came over to talk to us and the food still hadn't arrived. One of the worst dining experiences I have ever experienced. We will not be back. We will make sure to warn everyone about this establishment to save them the disappointment. read more

My hubby and I decided to try 38West and didn't stay for dinner because there was little to no seating with a table and chairs except 2 or 3 in the dining room. There were many more in the anteroom where you wait for.a table. No one was in the wait area, which is huge and isolated from the regular seating and it was empty and depressing. In the dining room itself, 3 tables with chairs were occupied and the rest of the tables are high tops with stools. I'm short and was literally unable to reach the seat! I go to other local restaurants with high tops and stools that I use without difficulty. So, if you like restaurants that cater to tall people, this is the place for you. read more

Waitstaff was great. Ambiance was fine (but waaay too many TVs going if you're not there for that.). Most of the appetizers tasted like they were made from Hannafords. I ordered Caesar salad with medium rare steak tips. Steak was inedible... overcooked and was marinated in something horrible. None of the 6 of us dining cared for the steak. My friend and I stopped in for dinner, and even though the place was packed, we were seated very quickly. I ordered the steak tips, they were amazing. My friend ordered the fried scallops and he said they were some of the best he's had. Even with it being so busy, the service was perfect, our drinks were always full, and the food was delicious. We're locals and I work in the food service industry. I have a lot of dietary restrictions and have an anaphylaxis allergy so I usually research menus before going anywhere. Unfortunately I couldn't be fully prepared because of the limited online menu. BUT our server MacKenzie went above and beyond even if she wasn't sure because they're still new. The staff was so accommodating and we appreciate their effort SO much! We were given over sized cards to keep the kids busy and they loved them. My 13 year old got the Blarney Special which was a crab cake on salad and he loved it! And he has a boujee pallet lol My daughter asked to keep her cup, instead the bartender offered her glasses, a bracelet and a necklace. The food was delicious, seafood was fresh, the gluten free batter was light and nice but a bit salty. The bartender was apparently also the owner but we didn't realize until we tried to give her a tip in addition to the server (It's what we do) and she politely declined because of her position which I respected. We took visiting family last night. It was our first visit since they opened. We frequent many places in the area. It will unfortunately be our first and only visit. The fish was horrible and so small portion they brought out 2 more pieces and that was better but soooo undercooked. My steak tips had no taste and sooooo dry they were horrible. The waitress was nice but so unattentive. She took my empty glass to get a refill of soda and I waited almost 15 minutes and had to ask again. I understand the cooks and wait staff are all new and all but the portions and the food was the worst I had ever had. Sorry. We had been wanting to try this restaurant since it changed ownership. There was a large reunion party being attended to which left one waitress and bartender for the remaining guests. We did have to ask to be seated as both staff were quite busy while we waited at the hostess station. The food and beverages were good for the most part; not great, just average. My chicken good, both tender and moist, potatoes and gravy were excellent, mixed grilled squash was very oily with an off taste. The onion rings were good. Both of my other family members were of the same opinion regarding the staff, food and atmosphere. The updates to the interior look ok, but I just don't get (and did not when it was under the previous owner) the big room that was added. It still seems odd and awkward. It's a large space that is not inviting and seems like it could be integrated into the main part of the restaurant better - except it did seem to work well for the large reunion party that was there. We waited a long time for our main meal to arrive and wait staff were attentive in letting us know our meals would be coming out after the large party. We understood, however, it would have made sense to have additional staff in the kitchen with such a large party there. The bartender and server were hustling and always a great attitude. I really wanted to like this place more as when I lived closer, I used to go frequently when it was under the previous owner. Other than the friendly, hard working staff, there was nothing to draw me back. Food and atmosphere ok, service very good. When spending time and money to go out to eat, I want a meal with more "wow", not an average meal I may be able to put together myself at home. Very nice place to go for dinner and lunch once again in Waterboro. If you see a disparaging review with mention of Woody's pay little attention. This isn't Woody's, it's not Sullie's, and it's not Bob's Bakery. It's run by someone that ran one of these places before. Everything is a little different this time and for the better. The food is great and they are just getting started. It takes a while to settle in folks. The food is great and the prices are reasonable. If you have complaint the owner is always in the house and your issues will be addressed. Been there 4-5 times already and no complaints. Try it out! read more

We ordered the chicken nugget basket with honey mustard sauce. we got 4 nuggets each, cole slaw, a few fries, and a drink. the honey mustard was so loaded with pepper it wasn't edible. We asked for a different sauce but they didn't have what we wanted. The chicken nuggets were like something from the frozen food section of the grocery store. our coleslaw was also loaded with pepper and we were not able to eat it. we asked for the check and put the chicken in a doggy bag just to be nice. When we got home the chicken was thrown in the trash. Our waitress was very nice and good at her job. but only said sorry you couldn't eat but our new chief put his spin on things. Arrived at 6:00 on a Saturday night. Placed our orders. Waitress comes back saying they have no beef Wellington, husbands order, something they only serve on Friday and Saturday nights. Placed another order 5 minutes later. Then waitress comes back saying they have no baked haddock , my order, had to replace that as well. Waited and waited and waited for our chicken finger baskets!!! The couple behind us who sat at least 15-20 later than we did got served their meals served to them. We both have patience but that was it for us!!! Left cash on table for 2 beers and walked out. Hope they improve ALOT for their future customers. Won't be us!!! read more

This was my first visit to 38 West. Nice upgrades to inside and service was great. The food was a little disappointing. The wings were not very good as they were drowned in that sauce. I'm not sure on side would make them better although the homemade side sauce was good! We also got a burger that was cooked to order and was good! Only negative was the bun was burnt all around edge. I have been to 38 west pub a few times and would recommend it not only for the food, but the ambiance as well. The corned beef Rachael as well as the corned beef quesadilla are very good. The corned beef is tender and far from dry. Onions rings are delightfully light and crisp. Service around lunch time is excellent and not once have I had to wait or felt abandoned. I recently took my family out to eat here on a weeknight. It was not busy, yet our waitress couldn't be bothered to refill our drinks. When the food finally came out the burger was overcooked, the fries were flavorless, the salad was wilted, and the haddock Rachel was bland and boring. Was looking forward to this place since they opened, unfortunately it was probably a one and done experience. I got the corn beef special since it was at Patrick's day and it was super salty and dry. The person I was with got the wings, these wings were whole entire wings. The sauce was not enjoyable and too spicy for a person to enjoy. Mix all that up with really slow service and it wasn't that busy, We were both disappointed in this place, and had been going to woodys on a regular basis. I should have read the reviews before eating here. So disappointed. Our part of 6 arrived on Saturday at 5. No one to greet us at the podium that states , please wait to be seated. Had to go in the bar to get someone to help us. Waiting, waiting. Server says they are short of help, on Saturday night? Finally ordered meals. Server returns to say they are out of regular side of vegetables and need to substitute. Meals delivered after quite some time, I'm type 1 diabetic and am careful not to take my medication too early. Thank goodness I didn't. I would have been rushing for sweets to sustain me! Entrees were prepared sufficiently but the vegetables and Farro was cool and sticky. We were the first of 2 parties there for dining. Not busy for a Saturday evening. For the price of eating out today I expect a lot more. Terrible, waited 10 minutes to be seated and 45 minutes for food, server came by after 10 minutes took order, then food came out 45 minutes later. I had the shepherds pie and was the worst I've ever had, my son had nachos and ate about 10% asked to have it taken off bill. When check finally came over( now I had been there for an hour and 20 minutes) they only took off $4 without mention. So I paid for my shepherds pie, soda the tax on that & a 20% tip. Owner came out yelling that I didn't pay bill, when I explained to her that I paid what I paid she was claiming my son ate most of it which definitely is not true. I tried to sympathize with slow service as they seemed short staffed, but it took way to long and getting yelled at by Owner saying that I didn't pay when I paid what was fair and even tipped.
