Absolutely LOVE this studio. I recorded my first piano piece 10 years ago, and came in a month ago to record and publish my second composition. Kathleen was extremely accomodating, and provided me with a fantastic engineer, Bryan. Kathleen really empathizes with the need of musicians, and worked to accommodate my needs. She is an absolute saint, and I love the "floating on sand" aspect of the studio that insulates acoustics from any "sound pollution". The vibe of the place hasn't changed in 10 years, making it the most consistent studio I have every worked with. A huge fan, and I look forward to many more sessions in the near future. FANTASTIC experience!! The iconic studio has a tremendous amount of positive energy conducive to creating. I found the deep earthy colors to be very grounding which helped facilitate a calm atmosphere. This was my first time recording and I was very comfortable and at ease. The vibe and energy of this recording studio is exactly what you expect, booking a session in the heart of Santa Monica The engineer rocked our session. What an outstanding experience! It has been a dream of mine to record at this studio for several years now, and finally a couple of weekends ago the dream came true! First off, Kathleen is a class act and a pleasure to work with. She is very accommodating and super kind in every way making each client feel important regardless of who they are, and that is saying something since 4th Street has had many superstars in its 'floating' room. The clientele list alone is what first sold me on this studio. The warm sound of some classic albums was captured here and I wanted that sound for my project. 4th Street delivered! There really aren't enough good things I can say about 4th Street Recording Studio. The experience all around was top notch. The engineer, Sutter, was excellent. The equipment was all Class A and you can hear it in the quality of the sound we captured that evening. They had the mics I wanted to use and the mixing board I've always dreamed of recording with. When we needed to cut an album without any frills (in other words, without spending a cent more than we had to), we went to 4th Street Recording. I really, really liked the young guys working in there, as they were very chill and down to earth. My guitar player was a total primadonna, which made things tense at times, but they always conducted themselves with dignity in spite of some childish treatment. I really appreciated that. 4th Street's claim to fame -- if I'm not mistaken -- is that the Beach Boys cut a lot of their stuff there. I kind of felt like not a lot had been updated (or dusted) since that time, but I could tell that in its heyday, 4th Street must have been a pretty swank little place. For me, though, it was way cramped -- the vocal booth was literally doubling as "the hallway" between the mixing room and the recording room, which made things kind of... unnecessarily complicated. Whatever though, it got the job done. read more

4th street recording studio might be the most laid back and amazing recording environment in Los Angeles. You not only get recording on top of the line equipment (priceless microphones) but the prices are totally reasonable. After midnight on weekdays it's awesome to bring a huge group of musicians to jam out for a few hours, then you let the engineer turn you into gods. There's a den upstairs for those musicians recording an album and need to get some shuteye before the next all day session. They have a lot of instruments on site. They have a grand piano which the beach boys used to record kokomo on. Incubus recorded many albums here as well. Plus your right by the promenade. Do some music go to the bar grab a beer come back and do more music. I'll be back. read more

What can I say... If you are considering tracking in any studios in the SCAL area, keep this one at the top of your list! Kathleen is the owner, and is sweet and attentive, easy to get in contact with for any of your needs. Sejo Navajas is the engineer we worked with to record our debut EP. He is a highly skilled tracking and mixing engineer. I took my tracks directly from the studio to the Master, the legendary Howie Weinberg, who remarked that the tracks were mixed perfectly! Thanks a ton, Sejo! And now the studio... Come here for the vibe, it is amazing! Some things you'll want to know before you go in: - The equipment is mostly vintage (which if you know your stuff, you know that's valuable), of course they have all the latest pro-tools stuff like any other up to date studio. It was out-of-this-World to constantly stare at the same 24-track once owned and used by Brian Wilson (what!), and to think one of my favorite songs, Kokomo, was recorded here. Inspirational! - There are a few studio rumors (they sounded convincing to me) such as the Neumann U67 microphone Sejo adores was used during recording of a Jimi Hendrix Experience album (I sang into this mic!!! Jimi could have!!! What!!!) and that the piano they have at 4th Street was used by Elton John to record Rocket Man (This was verified by someone supposedly). - There is a No Smoking sign hanging in the control room, we got a kick out of that!
