Noticed some pinball machines in here during a stroll after the Clement St Farmer's Market. Didn't have a drink, but the place was clean and looked like a great dive bar. Pinball machines were new and in good condition, they took dollar bills and the place even had a quarter machine. Will be back!

540 Rogues is a new bar and hangout in the Richmond on Clement St. The space is modern, chic and very welcoming. On the evening I first visited, they had a taco truck outside and DJ -- they have cool things planned for other nights. The bar is very spacious with ample seating. It's a great place for pre-dinner or post-dinner drinks, or to bring a group. The space was very clean (including the bathrooms). There are TVs all around for catching the game, and special deals when the Giants are playing. We tried one of their draft beers -- super fresh and satisfying. With the large space, the bar has added a great selection of arcade games, some retro and some more current. There's also a juke box to select your favorite tunes from. A new neighborhood favorite!

The old sign persists, the awning thankfully does not.

Its beautiful to be back. The space is restored, but they kept everything that hadn't rotted away. The bartop, they kept. The back-bar, they refurbished. The ceiling, that gorgeous ceiling that nobody had ever seen? You can see it. The mosaics formerly hinted at in the floor are clean and clear. The bathrooms? Finally usable, but soon to be covered up with stickers, I'm sure. The front window that never opened? They took out the dart board and put in some stools and now you sit in front of the window looking at Clement Street with the fog blowing in whorls. You still can't smoke on the patio (and I remember the days when you could, when I'd sit and drink with the Australian writer and smoke American Spirits Green Label and grade papers), but you can order from your phone. The pool table is gone, and in its place are arcade machines: Marvel vs Capcom, Area 51, Tetris! What's still there are the bones: A nice place to drink, loud punk music, friendly folks in the room, bartenders who are as comfortable with a shot and a beer as they are with a luscious Manhattan. They take credit cards now, and PBR is 4$ instead of the 2 it used to be, but goddamn, it feels like the 540 Club that was my home for years. It feels like the place I spent the pandemic mourning. Stepping in was the first moment of immersion in a steam room, the chill in my bones that I hadn't realized was there melting away with a cold beer and a tepid whiskey. Its beautiful to be back, and nice to be home, and as casualty of the pandemic raises from the dead, I feel slightly more alive among the now blue walls, wit the loud punk music blasting, with my friends behind the bar. As we used to chant long ago, back when there were still dollar drink Mondays, Tim Lincecum popping in, and Friday Night Happy Hours that crackled with joy and life: 540 Pride till' you fucking die!

The bartender engaged in fun banter and he had a good diverse playlist. There are 3 TVs playing football with 4Niner fans cheering and repping the bay! Too bad they lost to the Seahawks! We then proceeded down to the other fun spots!

They both also serve "Chinese mai tais" which is a mai tai with rums and some baijiu (Chinese liquor). I ordered the Chinese mai tai here after just having had one at Li Po. While the one at Li Po was on the sweeter side, the one here was a lot stronger. I watched the bartender as he made the drink and I could tell the percentage of alcohol in the glass was way higher. I knew it would be potent and it definitely tasted so. This bar serves "Lucky Buddha" which is essentially beer in a unique Buddha bottle. When we came here on a Saturday night the music was playing loudly and it had more of a loungey and clubby vibe compared to Li Po. It had a more modern interior and had bar counter space where people congregated. If you're looking for a lively vibe with a cool history this is a great spot to go.
