And most places that sell Indian tacos use the cheapest version of those ingredients they can find, cheap ground beef, discount, pre-shredded cheese and iceberg lettuce. They just seem a little gimmicky. Where this place shines is their jams and jellies. Those are amazing!!! Homemade, flavorful and delicious the jams are the reason you need to swing by! We bought a few jars and with every spoonful we revel in their wonderfulness while simultaneously mourning the fact that we're one precious serving closer to an empty jar. Go get a bunch of jam! And if you accidentally have a mediocre "taco" on the way out, then so be it.

Prior to this, I'd only had 'Indian tacos' once before, at a Native American cultural day at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. That one time was pretty much enough to make me a fan for life. Frybread tacos are all about the frybread. Truth be told, the filings don't matter. (As I write this, I can imagine a future full of gourmet 'Indian' tacos on Instagram, but...) The tacos are filled with cheap, super basic ingredients like full fat ground beef, iceberg lettuce, beef tomatoes, and "Mexican cheese blend." It's basically "white people taco night" on frybread. To me, having grown up in extreme poverty, these tacos taste like surviving poverty. They taste like a kind of soul food that you can only understand if you've lived it. (So if I see any too-privileged people knocking stars off because these tacos are exactly what they're supposed to be, I'll be shook.) When I saw the menu, I couldn't believe how cheap it all was. I'm pretty sure they need to raise their prices. I ordered a taco and a burrito (and got completely stuffed) for less than ten bucks. The ladies who work here all seemed super sweet. It didn't take long to get my order, and, in case this isn't clear by now, it was so good. I loved it. I plan to come back with friends.

This market takes place on Kern St. between M and N Streets, only on Wednesdays (10:00 am - 2:00 pm) from April through October every year. It is totally geared toward people working or visiting downtown; people don't come from across town for this market. Which is totally ok! There are a couple stands selling veggies and a few more than that selling fresh fruit - I get all my stone fruit and grapes weekly during the summer from this market. I visited today for the first time this season and noticed one or two additional stands, yay! I was really excited about the gentleman selling dried veggies and seasoned nuts. If you haven't tried beets chips and crispy green beans, you need to get down here! He has a big variety of veggie chips and most of his packages looked like they were $3 which is a good price for these goodies. I hope Rappit Up comes back this year! Besides the produce, I love that this market usually has music playing (live acoustic or DJ) starting at 11am - 1pm. How cool is that?? Also, they have a couple stands to grab lunch: Casa de Tamales, a stand with juices and kettle corn, Sanchez Corn (they offer corn on the cob with all the toppings as well as kernels in a bowl which is no-mess!) and Butternut Baking Co. with baked goodies.

The hours have changed to 9-2 and there isn't live music any more. The Twee trailer has moved on elsewhere. There are fewer vendors than when the market began in 2012, but still a decent selection of fruits and veggies. More prepared food vendors than in the beginning and I've noticed some small tables and chairs strategically placed for those who buy food and would like to eat it on Kern. Sure would like to see more participation so this could be an even bigger and better farmer's market. Like I originally wrote, we need a farmer's market downtown like CUESA runs at the Ferry Building in San Francisco. Heck, even Clovis does a bigger farmer's market on Friday nights.
