I used to live in Houghton as a kid...a very long time ago. And this spot was the theater where I saw my first movie in a movie theater -- Mighty Ducks! Anyway. Now it's a coffee shop and a super good one at that. I've come here twice in two days because their coffees are delicious. They have vegetarian and vegan/dairy-free options, food, breakfast, sandwiches and pizza nights and also live music! So fantastic. Their hazelnut oat milk latte is seriously one of the best I've had. We've had coffee at a few local cafes and so far, this is our favorite! The iced caramel macchiato was flavorful and coffee forward. The Miel was slightly sweet, creamy, and had a little cinnamon flavor. The vibe of the place is really cool with the old theater. We love cooks old buildings so this was right up our alley. Loved the food both times I have been there with my kids. The first time my son and I had sandwiches and my daughter had the blueberry bagel which she loved. The second time we all had pizzas. Yay! On the recommendation of our hotel's staff we walked here for lunch. My iced almond milk decaf latte was the real deal--rich dark coffee flavor in unsweetened almond milk. Some of the best coffee drinks in town. They make a great caramel machiato. Usually I only stop by when I'm in town and want food and coffee. I've had their chicken caprese, turkey on sourdough (could use a little more sour though), breakfast burritos, and one other chicken sandwich with pesto and all were good. My Grandma kept raving about the turkey and artichoke sandwich and insisted we all take a bite to try it. She also really, really, appreciated that they have homemade gluten free bread because she usually can't eat sandwiches when we go out because of that. Some reasons why only three stars are the atmosphere and price. I like coffee shops to be cozy and warm (like Cyberia or any other place that has comfy chairs, couches, and carpet). I find 5th and Elm to be a little "cold". The tables and chairs don't make me want to sit and buy more drinks for hours like other places. Might be the tile floor which I know sounds picky. But I think a few comfy fabric chairs might help. I do love their little outside sitting area in the summer though. It's nice to sip a coffee outside with that UP breeze blowing through. And the price is sort of high for Houghton. For the four of us to go out with ordering three full sandwiches, a half sandwich and soup, and a coffee it was over $30. The sandwiches are just sandwiches, no chips or fries or even a pickle. But the quality is good so I'm assuming that is why. 5th and Elm gets a thank you from me for having gluten free bread. It was nice to go out and see my Grandma able to order something other than a salad without croutons. So I am not a huge fan of coffee not being made to order. They have coffee pre made in carafes which I think tends to lower quality coffee then having the option to have it brewed and served fresh from a variety of options. Espresso was pretty good, however isn't served with a cup of cold water for your palate, but there is water available in a cooler. I also ordered a rueben which was delicious, I would definitely order it again. To be honest you really can't go wrong with any of the sandwiches, they are all so good. I went Mountain biking in Copper Harbor a few years ago and my friend and I stopped by here on the way back home. I ordered a breakfast burrito. I remember tasting the beans, rice, cheese, and some green peppers or salsa, which provided a little bit of a kick. The burrito was heated in a press, which helped make the burrito nice and hot. Went here to meet up with a friend on a Sunday afternoon and was comfortable. Overall, it's a nice place to get a quick meal and coffee. It wasn't too noisy and there was plenty of seating inside. There's also nice patio seating. Though there were people consistently coming in and out, everyone seemed to receive their orders in a timely manner. There is a pretty wide range of drinks and eats. We stopped in here for coffee and breakfast on the way to the Isle Royale ferry, around 8am on a weekday. Both were good, but our breakfast burritos took over 20 minutes to prepare!! There wasn't a long line ahead of us, and a place that does mostly takeout on weekdays should be able to handle orders much faster than that. This is my favorite coffee shop in the Houghton area as their coffee is truly flavorful and their foods are fresh (homemade) and delicious! They blend their own chai mix, as well, which is nice. This past summer, they brought in the Merry Berry frozen yogurt stand, as well, so I can now get my fro-yo fix year-round, too, which is wonderful! I'm a big fan of their yogurt, berry, granola parfaits, chased with a strong cup of the daily brew after a long run on the Canal trail. They now have a nice outdoor seating area in front when the weather allows, as well as free wi-fi. The only downside, to me, is that the inside seating is rather cafeteria-esque. It's just plain sterile and uncomfortable, which does not lend itself to lingering with friends, unfortunately. read more

When they cook at the kitchen, the grill smell from cooking (mostly meat) is over-drenched all your clothes and your hair although you are sitting in the lounge and the smell can last all day long. Mushy but flavorfully excellent, plus you can add avocado for 50 cents (do it). However - not so stoked by the coffee, which is the reason I went there. Cappuccino was among the more "eh" ones I've had. I don't consider myself a coffee snob, but I do like espresso, but wouldn't order it here again - would stick with drip. Also, rather slow despite not being a busy day. Clearly had a strong local community though - lots of art, fliers for local events, baristas knew many people stopping in.
