I have been to dozens of rural towns museums throughout Texas. This one though is the Diamond in…read morethe group. On our recent trip to Gatesville we found this gem. Its claim to fame is that it has over 6,000 different spurs, which is the Worlds largest and part of a 10,000 spur collection. You will see spurs that date back to the early 1800, along with Jackie Kennedy's spurs and those worn by Poncho Villa. This place has two floors, housing thousands of rare antiques and artifacts. It is huge, covering a City block with unique artifacts, to include Native arrowheads, millstones and clothing. It is very tastefully laid out with an antique soda shop, a historic school classroom, a transportation section displaying Ford Model T, a full scale log cabin/jail and numerous antique farm equipment, including a huge old case tractor and other early farm artifacts on displays. You will see a full scale doctor's office, a dentist office and partial hospital, displaying artifacts dating back to the early 1800. This is the single most impressive place I've visited in years. We spent two hours in it and didn't see it all. This is a must see museum. It has a gift shop loaded with very interesting merchandise for sale.

I say hidden because it does not look that big from the outside, but has a lot inside. It was so nice to have visited on their first day of reopening due to getting a new elevator (it has two stories). The volunteers were so sweet and offered up their knowledge on the displays, which was truly appreciated. There is so much history here including the Lloyd and Madge Mitchell world's largest spur collection and stories behind these extraordinary people. I appreciated the diverse history in the museum. There were so many displays and narratives posted, that it would take all day to read through it all. If you appreciate Texas History, it's definitely worth experiencing this museum. I'd like to pop in again if I get the chance to read all of the narratives that I didn't have a chance to get to last time. The hours were: Wednesday - Saturday 10 am to 4 pm.

I've been here plenty of times throughout my military career and every time I roll back in, it looks the same and somehow even smells the same. That weird hit of nostalgia only a soldier would understand. Nothing flashy, nothing new, just Fort Hood being Fort Hood. The memories tie you to it more than the place itself. Some good, some rough, but all of them part of the journey. Coming back through almost feels like stepping into an old photo you forgot you took. In all, it's one of those places that stays with you, whether you asked it to or not.

It is one of the largest military bases in the world ranking the largest by physical size against the others. Unique to this base, it is the only place where the U.S. can train two full armored divisions. Fort Cavazos (still trying to get accustomed to the renaming) has everything you need located inside the gates that you would typically find outside the gates in the neighboring "civilian" city. "The Great Place" is definitely loved by many and hated by some for various reasons; however, every place becomes what you make of it. The history captured in the many museums is worth exploring if you've never visited and interested in military history. Personally, nearly 10 years of my life was spent here and reflecting on the great memories and my patriotism keeps me returning. The continued progression and improvement is evident. #BeAllYouCanBe!

Courses of Clear Creek is the golf course on Fort Cavazos. The course has a good driving range, chipping green, and putting green, and hosts public scrambles once a month. I've played this course many times and absolutely love it. Typically it features three 9- hole courses, Deer Run, Panther Claw, and Armadillo, however one of the three has been under renovation for at least the last two years.

The fairways are all mowed to the ground, even the rough. Balls would not stay in the fairway even playing the higher elevation side. Weeds next to fairways. Grass was mowed but clippings were so deep it looked like they were ready to make hay. Carts are old and slow. Lots of weeds all around the ponds. Tee boxes had bare spots more than grass. Layout is very strange. Blind shots over trees and weeds at tee boxes on two holes. Big trees dead center on three fairways. Please explain this. Bottom line the course is managed on a government contract and they are milking the contract. Our service people deserve better. When I visit again I will go to Stonetree instead. The government employee in the military overseeing this contract needs to visit this place and see the contract abuse. I have seen 2 other base courses and both were well managed and were excellent. Not this one.

Such a comfortable feel provided by the employees, and the members. We knew this would be our second home immediately. We've been honored to meet so many amazingly friendly folks, any food ordered is prepared quickly, while you wait with fresh ingredients. Deli up to the bar! You will make new friends immediately, including the servers who are all like second family. My husband has not returned to golfing, but he is ready and will most likely do so this coming year. Personally, I just enjoy sitting outside at the clubhouse enjoying the amazing views. I've taken our cart all around the pathways and I'm always so impressed by what a nice course is located right here in Gatesville. Good job y'all!
