Jimmy's Place is an old school suburban milk bar in a very ethnic and multicultural area. Hipsters beware the locals here won't tolerate eye rolling and line pushing. So why trek out this far from your comfort zone? Nutella donuts. Yup I said it. This is where you'll find the famous Nutella donuts that the CBD crowd are going nuts for. At $3 a pop you'll want to buy them all. Ask Jimmy himself what flavours are on offer. He rarely has time to restock the small display cabinet before the donuts fly out the door. Flavours tried and tested- Nutella- delicious nutella to kill off any do-gooder diet. Warm in the microwave for 20seconds for a life changing experience Jam- ol' school jam donut. The growing prevalence of ALDI stores may seem excessive but their presence is still greatly less than the competition and im not going to say no to a price war. Their new location in South Preston is handy for Thornbury locals, sounds confusing but Google Map it. Known for their cheap "non-perishable" goods, you can pick up pasta and tinned tomatoes for 69 cents each, seasonal produce at lower than supermarket prices, boxed wine for $8.99 and home wares. They are currently selling 'fog machines' for $30 just to give you an idea of their random range. One reservation is their bulk meat packaging. Buying two kilos of mince is handy for the weekly family size shop but not always for myself. Its a cheap supermarket, stop whining. Did I mention $8.99 boxed wine?

Bonus points to Aldi in general for starting to stock some organic products that for my budget. Each visit I make sure to get the yogurt (organic) as well as the great value bags of avocados (apparently don't need to be organic) Conveniently located at Preston market, this Aldi is open much more frequently and longer than the annoying market hours.

Instead, it was affectionately referred to as the Nut Man. We never went to the Miramar Nut Shop, it was always to see the Nut Man. And I still like to call it the Nut Man because the man in the shop sells nuts, and so it isn't too far-fetched a name really. The Nut Man sells a whole lot more than nuts though. I mean, it you want nuts, you'll get nuts, all kinds of nuts, and cheaper than it costs in supermarkets. He's also got a lovely selection of dried fruits, legumes, Lebanese coffee, wonderfully piquant harissa pastes, canned goods, and there's some truly interesting edible goodies in the fridges at the back of the shop. Needless to say, the Nut Man himself is a lovely dude...with lovely nuts.
