The last thing that I ate before that was a sandwich at 3pm the previous day. The rigours of touring. Strangely, I'm not that hungry. As I take a short cut through The Bull Ring, (I refuse to fall in line and call it the daftly named all-one-word-21st-Century-Babylon title of 'bullring' like they have decided), I am arrested by the smell and sight of a new food outlet. A girl catches my eye and beckons me over for a closer look... Run by the instantly likeable Tony De Gracia, (the most unlikely name for a man of East Asian origin), Nooshi sell, as the name might suggest, noodles, and sushi. They also have a nice line in snacks. £3.20 gets you 4 pieces of chicken and seafood dim sum, or 2 pork buns, or one of another 7 options. Prawn toast is always the litmus test for me to gauge an Oriental eatery, so that's what I order. Oh yes, my appetite is back. The toast has a generous layer of prawns and yes, the toast is juicy and crisp. Nooshi is great. It lacks the Selfridges pomp and Nathan Barley like pretentious of Yo Sushi! and the just over the road-from-the-strip-club diveyness of Chop & Wok. Funnily enough Nooshi is equidistant from both so you should definitely give it a try.

Although I've eaten them both at various times throughout the years, I don't buy them as often as your more standard take away or lunch options. However, this is fast becoming a weekly lunch time treat for me. Not only is sushi a healthier food option, it's delicious too. The staff here are always smiling and will sometimes have tasters available if you're not sure what to go for so definitely worth asking if your walking by.

Ming's serve both Thai and Cantonese, which are quite different cuisines, so it becomes confusing and each cuisine is created in half measures. Luckily the starter I ordered of Tom Yum Goong Thai soup was delicious, light, fresh and flavoursome. The aromatic crispy duck was nice even though I don't usually eat duck, I enjoyed this. I had a duck for 7.50. All in all not a bad experience.

I suppose the prices reflect the target market, which are probably Birmingham University students who live in the student halls accommodation opposite. My common complaint about Chinese takeaway is the excessive salt and grease, but I didn't have this problem here! However, I did have problems with the owners. The last time I visited, I was with my brother. He was placing an order but the owner couldn't understand what he was saying. So were pointing at the menu and asking questions about the portion sizes. To our disbelief, we were snapped at and told that we were barred because we were apparently mocking the man! It's a shame they lost some loyal customers over a pitiful misunderstanding.

Decent. It's not the most exciting food in the world. But you didn't come here for that, you came for a quick bulk of meat, veg and noodles; and in that way this noodle bar excels.

I'd recommend getting on your bike or putting on your walking shoes, we live in hard times. The prices at Jumbo are fair. They offer vegetarian set meals at 18 quid for 2 people, trust me it is worth it. If you are having a party with 4 gusts or you are a hungry family then they do a set menu for 37 quid. A tenner each for a meal you will remember.

I was pleased, therefore, to discover Jumbo, which tastes more similar to anything I had in Beijing than anything else I've had in terms of takeaways. In particular, I would recommend the Kung Po chicken - nice and spicy and slightly more complex. The staff are lovely as well, and we all particularly appreciate their little nativity scene at Christmas. Slightly random for a Chinese takeaway, but a nice touch.

These days, when we're over at our friends house in nearby Quinton, this tops my list of suggestions for a meal to share over X Factor on a rainy and boozy Saturday night. The ingredients are always fresh and the food never has that stewed and over-cooked feel that you get from some Chinese takeaways. An altogether very enjoyable meal with attentive staff happy to pamper to our every need. Would recommend if your ever in town have a meal here.
