Outstanding, Honest Service! I can't say enough good things about A-1 Complete Auto Care in Guilford! I recently brought my car to Town Fair Tire in Wallingford for a slow leak in my front passenger side tire. They told me there had been a plug that came out and the tire couldn't be repaired. Not only had I never had a plug in that tire, but they also insisted I needed a brand new tire--and even suggested replacing all four, despite my car only having 26,000 miles. Wanting a second opinion, I brought my car to A-1 Complete Auto Care. They quickly identified the real issue: a nail in the tire. They confirmed there had been no previous plug and were able to patch the leak with no problem. Their honesty, professionalism, and straightforward service completely blew me away. Do not go here. It was my first time going to a mechanic on my own, and the owner took advantage of that. He kept my car for over 2 weeks and when I would call and ask when it would be ready there was no timeline given to me. I should've taken my car out of there but the whole front end was taken apart to fix some light wiring. I was incredibly overcharged for the labor, and when my issue came back two days later all of the sudden his promise to fix it again no charge was out of the window.. Brought the issue to a new mechanic, who fixed it within an hour and wasn't even a sliver of the cost. Sadly very corrupt owners and mechanics here read more

Do not ever use the shop! My husband has taken our cars here several times over the last 18 months after we moved to Madison. I was wondering why the issues for which we brought the cars into the shop were never fixed. For example, the brakes on one car were squeaky. They replaced the brakes and rotors, but the squeaking never stopped. We took the car back numerous times, and the squeaking to this day has never stopped, despite paying them many times. On another car, the check engine light was on. We took it into the shop. They fixed something and charged hundreds of dollars. Not even a week later, the check engine light was back on. The third car we took in really did it for me. The low brake fluid alarm was going off. Clearly, there is a brake fluid leak based on the fact that putting more brake fluid in fixes the alarm. Instead of fixing the leak, they replaced my brake pads, my brake rotors, something completely unrelated for $200, for a total of more than $1000. Not even one week later, the low brake fluid alarm continues to go off. The rotors had just been replaced 12 months earlier. There is no way that the rotors needed to repeat replaced again. They continue to rip us off again and again, I've told my husband we will never bring another car there again, and I am putting in a complaint to the Better Business Bureau. I can't even add up the amount that we have spent here because it will make me ill. read more

My family has been using A1 for a few years and never had a bad experience. Jon is a excellent mechanic and doesn't leave your vehicle sitting for days without completing the job. The work is guaranteed, but I have never had to come back a 2nd time for a repair. You can wait or leave your vehicle. Inspections are done quickly, as are oil changes. The waiting area is clean and comfortable, and also has a nice play area for children. Prices are definately competitive. read more

My Ford F150 (one of the most common vehicles in the US) had noisy air conditioning. I checked for clutch operation and replaced the belt, but the compressor was bad, so I brought it to A1 to be repaired. Three days later, I had to call for an update - no communication. Apparently, they were having a hard time removing the bolts. I was told that I needed a new compressor, A/C belt and accessory belt. What? I told John I had just replaced the A/C belt a week ago and the accessory belt 10,000 miles ago - nothing wrong with them. He backpedaled and said that they usually replace the belts "while we're in there". In where? The belts are on the face of the motor, requiring a single tensioner to be relieved. That was my first sign that this was a typical auto repair facility taking advantage of unsuspecting customers. I okayed the A/C belt and told John I wanted my old part. But when I picked up the truck (of course), there was no belt in the truck. I texted once, left a message on the phone - no response. Guilty, and he knew it. 24 days later, in the middle of July, the new A/C compressor seized. I called John and was told that they couldn't get the truck in for ten days. I suggested that he have a new compressor on hand, and confirmed that this was warranty work, but he ducked around it and said "We'll have to diagnose the problem first". The only logical reason for a compressor to fail in less than 600 miles is because no PAG oil was installed with the compressor - so I wrote a note to remind the tech to vacuum the system and install oil this time. Apparently, I bruised his ego, because six days after dropping off the truck I had no truck and no communication. When I called, I was told (curtly) that they were waiting for a compressor. Really? I called NAPA right next door to them, who told me they could have a reman compressor in four hours, new the next day. OReilly's had compressors in New Haven - right now. And so on. More lies. EIGHT days after bringing the truck in for my "appointment", I picked up the truck in the evening after everyone was gone. The front splash shield was sprawled out on the ground - never reinstalled. The two A/C fill caps were missing - never reinstalled. When I got home, I found a trail of red oil down the driveway and under the truck - someone had put so much pressure on a transmission cooler line that it was broken and I was losing transmission oil at an alarming rate. $245 worth of parts later, I had replaced the transmission lines, and in the process, inspected the A/C compressor installation. The compressor is held in place by only three bolts, and the one on the bottom was backed out more than 5mm. Never tightened down. I feel really sorry for all the people who don't know much about automotive work who think they are getting good service but really are getting screwed on a daily basis by A1 Auto and John's smooth demeanor. People, really - there are honest shops out there, and this is NOT one of them. read more

I took my car in after having an horrible experience with an auto company in Florida and they went far beyond what I could ever have expected to fix the problems with my car. Jon the owner was kind and helpful each time we brought it in. His mechanics are wonderfully helpful as well and looked like they truly enjoyed being at work. On Saturday, January 26 I had a terrible experience at A-1 Complete Care on Boston Post Road in Guilford, CT. I was driving southbound on Route 1 in Guilford. My phone fell out of my pocket and in between the seats of my car. I pulled into the nearest business parking lot to park and look for my phone. That parking lot was A-1 Complete Auto Care. I got out of my car to look for my phone and there was an man sitting in a car a few spaces away from me. From the moment I pulled in he just stared at me and continued to stare for a long time. He had an angry look on his face, it was a bit creepy and I felt uncomfortable. Eventually I looked at him to find out why he was staring at me. He said in an angry voice "This is my property. What are you doing here?". I immediately got into my truck, left A-1 and pulled into another business parking lot across the street and found my phone. Not sure why he did this. I won't be giving A-1 my business and I recommend that others avoid this business owner. read more

This is the third time our family has used A-1. Tune up, brakes and now brakes on our second car. They are fast, friendly and fair. The waiting area is very nice, clean and my 7 year old daughter loves it because they have a wonderful play room. I was also happy to see that they now do emissions testing as well. read more

Unfriendly rude and unhelpful to a first time visitor. Apparently I walked in the wrong door.

I've used A-1 three times in the past year, and each time they have provided fantastic, fair-priced service. The first visit was for an issue with my power steering. I dropped my car off in the morning, and the issue was fixed by the afternoon. Several weeks later, however, the problem started happening again. I called them, and they scheduled me for an immediate appointment. The issue was a faulty part from the manufacturer and it was fixed at no cost to me. The second visit, wasn't so much a visit as my car failed to start in my driveway, and I had my car towed to A-1. The mechanics spent several days trying to figure out what was wrong. Then, the car magically started again a few days later. I received a call from them asking to continue working to determine the initial cause - despite the fact that my car was suddenly working. They were committed to figuring out the initial problem, which I appreciated. In the end, I was charged an incredibly fair price for the time allotted. The third visit was for emissions. I scheduled an appointment and was in and out in under 10 minutes. I also want to note that the customer lobby and waiting area is clean and welcoming, and the staff is friendly and courteous. I brought my car for check engine light diagnostic, and I already knew the error code and what it means. This error code could be a result of several different problems and I asked to run diagnostic on what exactly it was. I was told that diagnostic would be $90. Several hours later I got a call that the car I set. I went to the place and they told me that I need to go to the dealer to do software update, because they can't run diagnostic without. AND they charged me $110.. For what? For that they can't do diagnostic? Nice. Never go back. It was my second visit to this place. First time I had some issues and they did a lot of unnecessary work, just to charge me extra money. read more

Terrific shop. I came in for a rattle driving at speed prepared to have to shell out. Owner was extremely honest, told me the issue, recommended just a tire rotation to start and wait a month instead of jumping on new tires, or getting a balance/alignment. Could have easily upsold me but instead went out of his way to save me some money. Rare to find this kind of honesty and good service. Also a beautiful and clean waiting area. Highly recommend. Another solid job - simple brake light repair - fast, fair, done right - it's the simple things A1 does that really impress me...

my husband brought his the truck here and after charging us $957.00 the truck died within days being stuck in our driveway..we had to spend an additional $133 for towing..the vehicle spent 6 weeks here..weekly being told another story..I finally asked for them to take out whatever they they put in and put our parts in so Texaco could diagnose the problem..they went to pick it up and the vehicle was in pieces..boxes of parts in the back seat ...wires cut..etc the Guilford Police spoke with us and referred us to Civil Court..as they stated what was done was unacceptable! It is unacceptable this day in age to do this to anyone..we are just a local working family! I assure you this is being posted to help others not have to deal with a situation like this! read more
