The facility is nice and clean, however they bait and switch with the prices. When I signed up I was quoted a price of $165/month (which is why I signed up). We were told the first month was free, but we needed to do a deposit. Still paid $200 when moving in. After 3 months our rate doubled with $330 (This price was not quoted anywhere on the website). I just received a rate increase (and was told this can happen every 6-10 months, not based off of market, or demand, just because). When I looked online at a potentially smaller unit, I saw my exact unit listed at "Standard Price: $220" with the first month free. When I called to ask why my bill was $130 more than the standard price I was told "That's the move in special. You pay that for 3 months, then you get a rent increase." This is not mentioned anywhere on the website. The website says there are 3 different promotions. Either 50% off first month, 50% off first 3 months, or first month free. So it would seem the unit I have gets the first month free with a "Standard Price" of $220. There is no mention of an over 50% rent increase after 3 months. This seems like deceptive pricing and or false advertising and I'm going to contact the BBB about it. read more

I used A-1 storage for several years. My experience was favorable in that the building was always clean and carts available. I NEVER saw any bugs or trash laying around. If I needed help there was always someone to assist. I would definitely recommend A-1 on Hollister in Imperial Beach. The interactions I had with personnel were always helpful & polite. read more

Prices were cheap in the beginning when I first signed up and received first month free but then A-1 self storage raises the prices a significant amount after a few months with no explanation. I've tried to switch to a smaller unit to save some money but because I've been an existing customer for over 4 years the customer service employee at the front desk said the internet rates to not apply to me, only new customers are honored with internet rates with no disclosure on the website. I felt Her demeanor was very rude and even asked to still cancel my existing account in a spiteful way. read more

Yesterday I got a call from the Area Manager for A-1 Self Storage because of my low YELP review. What he shared with me improved my rating. He told me A-1 had resisted the trend to have lower advertised (teaser) rates based on increasing the rate in the first few months. Ultimately, they could see they needed to reluctantly join that trend or continue to lose new customers to their competitors who used this tactic. He also shared with me his boss contacts him everytime there is a low/negative review and his job is to follow up with the customer. That is what I consider responding to customer feedback quickly, effectively and positively so I have upped the rating. Would have given them 5 Stars because the storage facilities and units are so nice as are all the staff but didn't want to go too far too quickly. read more

Lady at front desk was rude the storage wasn't even up to the measurement. When you pay for a certain size storage you expect it to be that size correct. When question about it the answer that I was given was if you don't like it we can refund your money and you can go someplace else. When asked if I could get a different storage they said it'll cost more. If a person doesn't like their job then they shouldn't work that job she apparently doesn't like her job. I shopped at a lot of the storage facilities, in the South Bay, and this one was by far one of the cleanest. I also got a reasonable rate when I rented my 4x10 in the summer of 2020. Aside from not being able to find a cart, sometimes, my biggest issue is that my rent has gone up twice in 16 months. Recently it went up close to 15%. I know rent will increase, but I wasn't expecting to be paying as much as I am now, in less than 2 years. It is generally clean inside. The back parking lot is sometimes littered with junk or trash, though. You have to key in a code to get to the back parking lot, inside of the building, into the elevator if you're going up only, and when you're exiting the back gate. I feel my belongings are safe here and I don't worry about rodents getting into my unit. I would recommend this place, but I hope they don't increase my rent again - at least not for another year, if they have to. read more

Likes: Clean, has carts, has big elevator. Interesting sizes and very modern looking with motion sensing led lighting and keypads. Good pricing. Dislikes: Lights timers turn off too quickly when in unit. Elevator button must be pressed after inputting keycode which is on the other opposite wall rather than in the center.. Button should not exist if using a key code or put it on the same wall in the center Keycode module at entrance and exit are blocked by a yellow pole forcing us to exit our vehicles twice per visit... Very annoying! No online bill pay... "yet" Map doesn't show cart return areas No trash cans in facility Forces you to pay monthly "insurance fee" of $10. Email customer service doesnt seem to like suggestions... Door and stopper on end door is new yet doesn't work at all (literally doesn't make contact with the floor) read more

There are over 700 units and only FOUR carts for paying customers to use. That math doesn't make sense. If you plan on doing a quick load in or out, don't expect an available cart. There are always a tons of people living from their cars/vans/trucks parked outside using the carts for hours. The place is locked but doesn't feel safe. The doors are supposed to stay closed/locked but every time I've been here they are wide open, allowing anyone to walk in. You would think that with all the cameras, the employees would see the open doors, and go and close them. Also, the bathrooms are disgusting. Last time I tried to use it, it was filthy with no toilet paper. read more

The faculty is clean and secure. I was very pleased with the service there and felt the customer service was excellent. I prefer them over US storage as they will prorate your rent to pay for only the days you are there and not for the whole month. Graciela was especially helpful. Had a great experience with my first storage rental. Spoke with Elizabeth at the front desk and she was very helpful and professional. The facility is very clean and you get a free move-in truck up to 20miles for first time renters. Also, you get a free lock once you "check-in" yelp when u do a review which is what you'll need for your storage. Yes, u need insurance but if you already rent and have renters insurance then you can use what you are already paying for at No extra cost.... Gave me a good deal on a 10x10 on the first floor... Received excellent customer service from Ray. I was looking for a last minute storage space and I had called a different location and they were very helpful and actually told me that this location had the space size I needed. I made my reservation online. When I got to the location, I was assisted by Ray. Everything went smooth, I did have to make a change to my reservation and he was able to accommodate me. I rented a drive access storage unit. The only reason I didn't give a 5 star is because in the middle of unloading, I was approached by Elizabeth to tell me that I had to move my truck away from the storage unit. According to her, her manager was not going to be happy that my truck was in front of the storage unit. I did rent a storage space that cost me a little more so I can have drive up access to my unit. During the time that I was unloading, maybe two cars drove by without problem and I would have moved if I needed to. I was actually assisted by the manager Ray and he saw my truck and showed me my unit and he did not tell me not to park in front of the unit. Other than that, this is a very nice location, clean and friendly staff. The other locations were very friendly and helpful. read more
