I had to bring the dumpster back to their house/location after I attempted to stop service.... I've never worked with a worse company. And, April 2022, they are reporting stolen cans.... I assume their last criminal attempt to access insurance money. read more

One star because I had to. This establishment is, at best, a joke. It took 3 weeks to get a small dumpster delivered to our house. We called and left several messages, I finally emailed and told them we were going with another company. The dumpster appeared that day. 5 weeks later, it's still sitting in our front yard full of trash. Between my husband and myself, we've called everyday, sometimes multiple times a day. IF they answer, the receptionist keeps telling us Steve is going to come get the stupid dumpster, but Steve has yet to show up... GO WITH ANOTHER SERVICE! This place sucks! read more

UPDATE: Months later, we still have the bins. Clearly I own them now. I think I'll hack them into compost containers or something. I feel bad for leaving such a negative review because 1) I like them as people, and 2) this is a true family business; the kind that should, by all rights, prosper. And yet... It's amazing how well the other reviews capture the various facets of A-1's incompetence! I signed up a couple years ago, having seen the star ratings but not having read the reviews. I figured -- yes, they're bad, but they're cheap, and just how badly can you screw up trash and recycling?! Well, EXACTLY as badly as the other reviewers say. While our trash pickup was fairly consistent -- on time, without (too many) missed days, etc. -- recycling was horrible. It's a 50/50 chance whether or not they'd pick it up on schedule. (Note that our trash was picked up at 7 am but the recycling at 4 or 5 pm, so we had to leave everything in our driveway after coming home, hoping they would still come pick it up.) No one answers the phone; no one responds to email. After finally getting through, they ask if we had it out on the scheduled days. As if it's an argument they want to win. Then, a few months ago, the billing errors began. After repeated calls, I FINALLY got someone on the phone. She acted as if it was my job to prove that I paid. So I did. I read out all the check numbers for every month, and when they were cashed. Repeat the process once a month for the next 3 months. During this time, our recycling was NEVER picked up. They missed several whole MONTHS (in a row) of scheduled pickups. After being informed of this, I was asked "Why didn't you say something earlier?" No apology about billing errors. No apology for not picking up recycling or not getting back to us. Clearly an argument she believes she won. After that, we finally canceled. If that's my losing an argument, so be it. :) I'm not the one who lost a customer. We made sure we were paid up (because of the billing errors, this took two weeks and a search for every check number for the last 6 months -- again, on me to prove that I paid). We then asked for them to pick up their containers. They are still sitting in our garage. We put the bins out on every scheduled pickup day. For a month. And once on a Saturday, by request which came with a PROMISE they will be picked up. After calling and emailing repeatedly to remind A-1 that their cans are on our property. No response. After 3 promised (missed) pickups, we still have the bins. I don't know what to do with them. We never heard from A-1 again. I guess you CAN screw up trash collection pretty badly. Saving $2 a month is not worth this hassle! read more

I live in CA and I am here helping my dad since he became ill. Now that I have been dealing with A-1 it has been the worst experience from these people. They have gone longer than two weeks without picking up trash. I have called them several times, they make promises and then do not follow through. My dad has already paid them for the service and they have not done the job. There are no consumer protections from a company like this and instead, they take an 80-year-old man's money and do not do the job. Under no circumstances should you ever do business with this company, pick someone else more reliable. Before I go home I will make sure my dad has a replacement company that will do the job as they promised and stop taking his money up without doing the job. read more

I have been using A1 Trash Service for just over 1 year. Things were absolutely great for the first 6 or 7 months. Lately they've become inconsistent on the time they pick up the trash, sometimes at 2pm, sometimes at 7am. When I tried to call the office to discuss, no one would answer. I've also left messages and no one would return my call. Email is the best way to communicate with them. In their defense, they have stated that trash needs to be out by 6am. I decided it was best for us to part ways because our schedules did not match up. When I tried to communicate with their office about this, I received several very rude and snarky messages back. It seemed as if their office was more concerned with "winning" the conversation and turning our email conversation into an argument, than to keep a customer satisfied. A phone call would have gone a long way. When I asked about a phone conversation, I was told that it would be a "waste of their time" to call me. If you are looking at a trash company, I would say this one would be a "waste of your time" to work with. I want to be clear, I am leaving this company because of their terrible customer service, not because of their actual trash pick up service. read more

Please be careful when canceling your service with this company. I informed them I was moving and they still charged and continued to take my money after they promised I would be removed off "auto pay". I am now having difficulty getting my two months of service money back. Hence, we moved in May.. got charged for June and July. All I want is my refund! Very poor business practices!! read more

This place is a scam, been with them for a year and would say there service is 50/50 chance of coming on time on the correct day. Customer service is non existent, their phone voicemail have been full for over 6 months and they have never answered one of my phone calls. We started using A1 in April 2016 and it was great. Trash got picked up every week. It wasn't until we added recycling to our service and they would charge us and never pick up the recycling. I got so fed up that I had to call them to come pick up our recycling and then once again they went back to not picking up our recycling. So I do not recommend them at all. When you start stealing peoples money that is not okay In my book. Now I wait for them pick up their trash containers on Dec 2. read more

A-1 does a fine job of trash collection. Always on time, and provides the usual value-added services, such as recycling, yard waste handling, etc. Their pricing is about the best in town. I did have a billing problem with them a while back, but we eventually got it worked out. Note: it's better to handle auto payments through your bank account, rather than letting them make automatic withdrawals from a debit/credit card. They don't seem to notice if you override their auto withdraw with another form of payment. Another note: they are not set up for electronic payments through your bank's auto bill pay. This means a check gets sent, and that money is in limbo until they deposit the check, which can sometimes be a couple of weeks later before the payment shows up in your bank account. Not really a bad thing, but makes you work a little harder to keep track of outstanding payments. Like we did for everything in the 20th century. read more

So this is the first time that I have any sort of review, but I just want to make sure that ya'll know what you are getting into with A-1. We decided to go with them, despite the low reviews, because they are the only place in town that will recycle glass. After signing up, it took them 3 weeks and multiple calls in to start picking up our trash and recycling. They said they would come by after a missed pick up day, but did not do so until 2 days later. A few months later, I witnessed them taking 2 large bags of recycling (boxes and the bag on top for glass) get thrown in with the trash pickup. Recycling is an extra fee each month. Others I know with A-1 have seen similar things with negligent recycling pickup. Fast forward to the sale of our home. We discontinued service half a month in advance. The week before the new owner moved in, I called over 15 times during business hours to request that the cans be picked up, with no answer or answering machine. Finally, we went to the address listed on the website, where there was another unhappy customer there as well. After 10 minutes at the door, a woman pops out and asks what we want. I explain the situation, and she said that they have been on vacation for a week, weren't open today, and that we were interrupting her "sleeping off a vacation". They had not let customers know that they would not be contactable during this week. She also tells me that they usually don't pick up the cans when people move out, but wait until the new owners get so sick of having them there that they call. She then proceed to be incredibly rude to the sweet old guy who was waiting to talk to her about his issues. Bottom line, this can't just be chalked up to poor customer service. Their recycling is a scam, and is being reported to BBB. Steer Clear. read more

This company is absolutely horrible! They hardly ever answer their phone. Their customer service is garbage. They kept charging me after I moved! I called several times before the move to tell them I would no longer need their service and several times after about the money they were still charging me. They even said they were mailing me a refund check which I never got and they STILL charged me. I did a dispute through my bank and they STILL charged me. They had the audacity to email me when a payment didn't go through! I had to get a whole new card to stop them from charging me. I really hope they lose business because that's Fraud. This company should be sued! I would if I still lived in town. We signed up in 2010 or 2011, no issues until our credit card expired and we couldn't get ahold of them to update. Then they started calling us while on vacation to take care of the issue. Almost 3 weeks went by without them taking our trash in the summer due to this. Finally the card was updated and things went smooth again. When we moved I called in January 23, 2017 cancelled our service and they said they would pick up our trash bin. February came and we were charged, so I called again on the 14th. The lady I spoke to said no notes were made on the account so she would take care of it. I asked if she would like a forwarding address, but she hung up in the middle of me speaking. March came and at the time I didn't see a charge so I thought whew it's actually taken care of! October comes around and my identity was stolen, so my husband is fine combing through charges to see A1. Apparently I just missed the charge and they continued to charge us! Sure part of this is my fault but there is no excuse for me having to cancel service twice and still being charged. Whoever moved into our place hopefully enjoyed the free trash service! read more

We recently moved to XXX. The previous owner had a contract and the trash cans from a1trashservice. We have our contract with another company. We have called them several times during the past 45 days and requested to have their trash cans to be picked up. Hasn't happened yet! Unfortunately we don't have any space for those and because of rain and wind they have been making a mess in the neighborhood. read more

I tried to start service with A1. I was told a start date. Did not happen! I also never got a container that was to be delivered to my residence. I tried to call only to find a full voice mail box. I sent a email to them using the "contact us" tab on their website. After no response I called and got a human. I explained what had happened, and was told that I could expect my trash picked up on a certain day. mid afternoon of that day I called again to let them know that the trash cans were still full. I was told to leave the cans out because "the trucks are still out and I was on the list for that day". As you can guess my trash never got picked up. The next day I called again to let them know I was not going to use them. The lady at A1 didn't even care or ask why. This company does not understand customer service at all. Lack of response to multiple phone calls, voice mails, and emails sent. Currently I have been charged for 1 month additional after i have tried cancelling my service. It is hard to cancel service when their office is non-responsive. All trash companies in Manhattan will pick up your trash timely so my review rating does not reflect this. Terrible, I moved out of Manhattan three months ago and have been trying to cancel my service ever since. After filing a complaint a with the Better Business Bureau I was finally refunded my money. BUT they are still refusing to pick up the cans and I'm still getting fined by my HOA for cans being left out. The office manager, Dawn, told me to remove them they need a letter for my realtor. I OWN THE HOUSE! There are plenty of better options in the area for trash and recycling. Choose wisely. read more

This company doesn't even deserve 1 star. They are ABSOLUTELY horrible. I canceled service with them in January of 2017 because I had so many billing issues and could never get ahold of anyone. I left several messages and NEVER got a call back. It is now May and their trash can is still sitting in my back yard. I have phone records to prove that I have called AT LEAST 15 times and left voicemails informing them that the trash can was never picked up. Once again, never got a call back. The trash can is now full of water and mosquitoes from the recent rains. It has been sitting in my backyard for almost 5 months!! When I did finally get ahold of someone, I was promised that she would have her dad come get the trash can by the end of the week. A whole month later, no one has come to get it. I proceeded to call AGAIN and was told "you should have called yesterday, I was in the area" I guess my 15+ calls weren't enough. I've called them to come get my trash 4 times now and was told each time that they would inform the drivers to come get my trash. This company does a very good job of collecting trash, but their record-keeping is awful. I have been overbilled and when I canceled service because I was moving away, they did not pick up the bin. I asked them to bill my credit card and I received a bill in the mail...and it was for an extra month. I had canceled my service and they still billed me for the following month. Pick any other company in Manhattan. A-1 is a real hassle. read more

If you are looking for a trash service in Manhattan, find a company other than A1. I used them for the last four years and while their prices are decent their customer service and consistency are horrible. They rarely answer the phone and forget about them returning a message. Occasionally they would respond to an email but it typically took multiple frustrated emails from me first. I used their recycling service as well and there were periods when they would not pick up the recycling for weeks. I recently cancelled my service since I was moving out of the area. When I called to cancel the message said they were out of the office for the next week but to send an email for a faster response. I sent one email - no response. Sent a second email - no response. Tried to call again - voicemail full. After no response from them I finally called again a week and a half later to confirm that my service had been cancelled. Instead of apologizing about their poor customer service and lack of response, I was told to watch my attitude when I explained that I wanted my service cancelled a week and a half ago and I had since left the state. Bottom line - AVOID THIS COMPANY, spare yourself the frustration. read more
