I brought my 11 year old son to this shop today, after finding reviews about Brito online. I'm a hair stylist, but would rather have a barber cut my son's hair. I came in a few months ago and was put in Galloway's chair, and I could not be happier with his work. I have long, thick hair and I wanted an undercut in the back. I showed him a picture I found on Pinterest and he nailed it all. The shape I wanted it cut, the design I wanted, a super close shave where my hairline ends. I walked up to the door a half hour before the posted closing time (online and on the door) and found it lo ked, even though the barber and a client are sitting in there. Guy turns around, gives me the stink, shakes his head and turns back without giving me a second thought. If you say you're open till a certain time, don't go and lock the door a half hour early and then look at me like I'm crazy for wanting to come in and get a haircut. I usually go to Lessards in Brighton, which is a great barber shop, but I needed a haircut on a Saturday and didn't want to wait an hour (or more) like I knew would be inevitable at Lessards. This place is in a convenient location in Watertown Square. It's clean and there's a pool table in there if you have to wait, but I didn't. I got Glenn, friendly guy. Apparently you can get lined up and zig-zags shaved in your hair, if that's your thing. But they can do regular cuts great too. I'm a nerdy white guy and they cut it just like I asked, so I didn't leave with ice-picks or anything. It's not super quick, but Glenn took his time to make sure he cut it well (20-30 mins), so it was fine. Open 7am-7pm Mon through Saturday. Also a nice thing is that they take appointments, which a lot of barbers don't do. $18 for a regular guys cut. Would definitely go back here. read more

The guys that work here are very talented, efficient, and friendly. Both Brito and John are awesome, although I haven't had my hair cut by the most recently hired employee. It's almost worth it to be a wallflower and listen to these guys banter back and forth about the comings and goings of other patrons, or where they grew up. You should call ahead and make an appointment -- you can walk in, but you may need to wait a while. If you try to walk in before the holidays, there's a very good chance that they won't be able to take you. They also offer a frequent customer card, so after 9 cuts your tenth is free. $20 for a good haircut is about right -- you can find cuts cheaper somewhere else, but you tend to get what you pay for. read more

Recently decided to change up my long straight hair after 20+ years. Even tho it's more maintenance to keep up with a partially shaved head, this barber shop has kept my hair in check. They're always busy ( cuz they are goooood), but they always make my walk-ins work. Love the work they do...i have a pretty conservative job, so when I have to scale back, they respect my wishes. I'm never going back to this place again. I was refused service, because I have a cold. What is it? They can't take simple infection control measures like: gloves, washing hands between haircuts, hand sanitizer, and if need be masks. These are not expensive, and should be normal practice in a barber shop. The worst part was that I was forced to sit & wait for 45 minutes before I was told that the barber was going to refuse to cut my hair. Colds are a part of life fellas, and you should be able to handle a customer with a cold. Frankly, the conditions here are filthy, and maybe the Watertown Board of Health needs to issue a citation. read more

One of the barbers, short guy slicked hair, was definitely tweaking, kept saying to his client I was looking around too much. Name was Gallo if I remember correctly. Very odd. I went to 3 Brighton barbershops last Saturday only to find long waits and less than friendly staff. Then, after driving into Watertown to see what I could find, I wandered into "A Barber Shop". I was greeted by all three barbers on shift and immediately given a seat for a haircut. I have been to barbers all over the city and this was by far the best one I have had to date. My particular barber, a really nice guy named Brito, took his time to make sure the cut was perfect. The entire staff made great conversation and the overall experience couldn't have been better. A men's cut is only $16 and if you do end up having to wait, the shop also provides a pool table, plasma screen tv, and vending machines to keep you entertained in the meantime. Great haircut but prices are questionable. They say they are open at 7:00 am but no one is ever there.The owner is great and has his prices on the wall. The guy in the middle charges different prices every time I come in. He pockets the money instead of putting the money in the register. I wonder what type of operation is being run here. He's been cutting my hair for about 2 years and I'd follow him anywhere (especially right down the street from where he was) because he gives amazing haircuts. I've NEVER been disappointed (and I'm very picky). He listens and does exactly what you want. The place is not fancy or big, but has a friendly/casual feel and the price is great ($20). I would definitely recommend John (or anyone there. I saw good work and one haircut was on a boy about 6 yrs old. His mother seemed pleased.) Overall I have to say my experience was just ok. A hair cut did take place, and it is one that I'm not ashamed of. The two guys that worked there were nice enough, but the service itself took forever. After about 5 minutes of shaping the sideburns they still managed to come out uneven. The whole haircut took about 40 minutes, and I didn't have a lot to start with! Again good guys, clean place, normal prices, but the speed is less then desirable. read more

There are so many positives about this place but unfortunately the negative is the haircut and that is the most important part. Great place - very friendly, good conversation, slow service but that was without an appointment and they really do take their time on their haircuts. It was my first and only time here so there's a little wiggle, but this is the worst haircut I've had. Uneven, randomly long in some areas and shaved bald in others. Embarrassingly inconsistent - now I have to get it fixed by my regular barber. Goes to show that it is always worth is to stick with someone you know and who knows your hair. read more

The shop is clean, comfortable and apparently they do a great job. I walked in the door and the first thing my wife said was "Who cut your hair? They did a great job". I'm not sure who I got my hair cut by here, but it wasn't Brito who everyone speaks so highly of. This guy seemed new or something since after all three cuts I saw him give he had to check with the other barber about what he was doing with change. TL;DR I came in for a trim (a literal trim) and left with a very weird, uneven, patchy, stupidly bad haircut that I had to go elsewhere to get fixed. I specified that I wanted about an 1/8 of an inch off all around just to neaten up my slightly grown in cut from elsewhere. I was deliberately trying to leave it a little longer, which I explained. The barber asked me if I wanted the sides shorter than the top. I was confused since the sides already were shorter than the top, which I pointed out to him. I reminded him that I just wanted it to be a bit neater and tidier all around, but did not want to take a lot of length off. He wound up going much shorter on the sides (1/2 inch plus off the original length), screwing up the weight lines in my hair from the last cut, not cutting along the natural part that I sat down with and always style to, and giving me razor burn on my neck. I pointed out some issues with the cut to him, watched him just cut more off without fixing them, pointed out the issue with him not cutting to my part, and left when he said I'd have to get an even shorter haircut to fix it. I totally understand that haircuts don't always turn out exactly the way you want them to, but I was pretty angry that my very explicit instructions were not followed and I walked out with a mess of a haircut. Brito is the man. Plain and simple. I've been going to A Barber Shop for a over a year and a half which is a very long time for me to stay with the same barber. Most of the time I feel like the barber gets too comfortable with me and it makes me feel pressured to talk about things I'd rather not discuss when I just want to get a good hair cut. I always feel comfortable in this place and it's like I'm going to hang out with my friends whenever I go see Brito. I was happy to see that a new barber shop has opened in Watertown Square. The barber who runs this shop, Brito, was super-friendly and gave me a good haircut. He pays great attention to detail, and is a wizard with the clippers. In defense of Barbers in general. Gyms, hospitals, barbershop/salons are prime areas that germs, flus, ringworm, Marsa, diseases,/viruses,outbreaks can be spread if not sanitized or rules/laws are not followed. Barbers are no exception! They have to follow such rules/laws to protect persons, communities, personal interest, and businesses in Mass. or pay severe fines, closing and jail time. You admitted to being sick. Your physical condition was enough to warrant attention to too be told service could not be proved due to your condition. A barbershop is a small, high volume traffic area people of all ages go which potential be a place to spread an outbreak of some sort. Barbers and clients are constantly in each other's face and space while getting a shave it haircut. Ask yourself: would you call it professional if your barber was coughing and sneezing all over you while getting a haircut.? I understand your frustration but maybe it would of been a better decision to go when you were not sick or flu. I have been in this barbershop before it is clean, barbers always wash hands, and constantly spray clippers and tools after every cut. Thanks guys, your great! Was just recently opened, but I think is a great place for a cut and straight razor shave. Good service and talkative barber to make conversation with. Placed is open late, which is great. Would recommend this place to anyone who needs a quick cut or is looking for a new barber. Also there is a pool table to use (not in great shape) while you wait. Not sure if it is still the case, but there was a second barber who was selling bootleg DVDs, which was a minus in my book or I'd make this 4 stars. read more

Just got a great haircut at "A Barber Shop." I have curly hair and it can be difficult to find a good barber who can be consistent with my hair. Brito did a really good job and listened to my preferences. He said something to the effect of "the customer is the architect and I am the engineer" meaning the more help we can give him on what we want the better he can deliver on it. The haircut was also a scissor-only cut, which is important to keep my hair under control. It was also a nice touch that he used a straight razor to clean up my sideburns and around the edges of my hair. The location is also perfect for me as it is right on Main Street in Watertown Square. Since I take the express bus from Watertown Yard downtown for work I was looking for a place that I could go to on my way home from work - bingo! The shop is open until 7:00 pm Mon-Thurs and until 8 pm on Friday. Prices are very reasonable too. If any of you are like me - your wife matters in where I get my haircut and she gave two thumbs up. He is a nice guy, good at what he does so I will definitely go back. read more
