Now, I don't have any pets, I'm way to irresponsible and likely to forget to feed them and stuff.......but, my flatmate has two lovely cats, which gives me the best of both worlds, as I get to play with them without any real responsibility. So, occasionally I've popped in here as a favour for my flatmate to get food or litter, and it makes me wish two things - that I had my own pets, and that I'd been here as a kid. It really is the kind of pet shop that children's dreams are made of, with everything you could possibly want. Every kind of toy, collar, tank or cage. It's all stacked up here in that organised chaos kind of way that small businesses do so well, and topped off with that authentic sawdusty petshop smell. This is by far the best pet shop in the area. Its been going strong since 1934 and you can see why. In-store the staff are really friendly and helpful to what you're after and they have an excellent, user friendly website to back the whole operation up. To be honest, once you've been to the shop a few times, its easier to order online and if your order is over £39 its free delivery! That said, it is nice to have a browse over the myriad of pet paraphernalia available in this place. I just bought my smelly dog a new bed mattress as his was in a bad state. As the proud new owner of a little Cavapoo pup, this place has been an absolute godsend! Full of everything most pet owners could ever need, A Coombs Pet Centre is a real Brighton gem. I've been in there 3 times over the past week, before and arrive the arrival of Bramble the pup, and each time the staff have been overwhelmingly friendly and helpful. They're attentive without being pushy and know exactly what advice to give. I was after pretty much anything and everything - lead, collar, toys, treats etc - and they assisted me with it all, getting it spot on. The first thing I picked up was a collar and a lead. The man had reccommended the size of these and when I got home (pre-Bramble) and did the collar up I sighed, thinking there was no way it would fit, on second glance. I figured the man had been friendly, and the collar cheap so no harm done but.... upon Bramble's arrival I gave it a shot anyway and lo and behold it was spot on. Serves me right for doubting the professionals! The toys and treats have gone down, well, a treat! She loves them all and they all seem very puppy friendly, as promised. The shop caters to all pet types - birds, cats, fish etc - not just dogs and really is a pet owner's paradise, so if you're ever struggling to find the perfect pet supplies, come here! :) It's officially my local pet shop and I won't be going anywhere else! It's a rarity for me to have a reason to go shopping in a pet store, but upon homing a dog for a week or two, I now had a reason and a purpose. Never have I seen an animal enjoy eating such a strange collection of other animal parts. Pig's ears, cow's noses, venison tongue to name a few. And I was now rifling through them all to find the most desirable animal feature for 'Dude'. The staff here were very helpful though and when they returned my personalised dog tag wrongly printed (twice) they were all too happy replace them. read more

Great shop for all pet supplies. It's a family run business. Good range in stock, for all animals. Always buy my fussy cats their food from here as they stock lots of different flavours. Staff always very friendly and happy to help. You can also buy birds, small pets and fish. read more

First and last visit to this shop! Good shop with lots of supplies and staff is friendly and helpful but the reason why I gave a one star rating is that I was offended by the attitude of the guy at the till (looks like the owner possibly). I went to purchase a zebra finch bird yesterday with a friend and I asked the price to one of the shop assistant before choosing the bird who confirmed it was £4.00 (my friend also heard this). I saw them online between £4.00 to £20.00 in other places so I thought it was very good indeed and chose my bird and went to the till to pay but when I got there, I was asked £14.00 for it!! With surprise, I told the guy at the till that I was told it was £4.00 and he immediately pushed the box with the bird in it far away from me as if I would have grabbed the box and run off with it!! I felt very offended by this gesture and for this reason he deserves a one star rating in my opinion. Instead of checking with the shop assistant if what I was saying was true or not, he kept going on that he has been selling this bird for such a price for the last 15 years and kept going on about VAT etc etc. I decided to buy the bird at £14.00 as requested as quite frankly I was more concerned about the little bird sitting in that tiny box rather than the extra £10.00 charged but I will never put my foot in that shop again. Also worth mentioning that if you buy a bird from this shop and it does not get on with the other birds you already have in your cage/aviary, the shop will not take it back. This indicates to me pure money speculation and not love and concern for the animal welfare. I am looking to buy a very large aviary and will certainly not purchase one from them...not because of the price so much (even though they are rather expensive in there) but the attitude. I I am a 50 years old decent woman and would never even dream of lying about a price difference of £10.00 for a bird and let alone run away with it!! Disgraceful. read more

I have a cat with finnicky digestion, and I've always appreciated the wide selection of natural cat foods available in this locally-owned business. In particular, it's nice that they stock the full range of Lily's Kitchen for cats where Waitrose does not. On one occassion, my cat liked the single packet of wet cat food I bought her to try, but once I brought home a whole box, she turned her nose up at it! They were very gracious about letting me exchange it (with a receipt) for another brand that my cat was less effusive (read: vomiting) in her dissapproval of. I find the prices to be on par with biggger stores like Pets at Home but I try to support small business when I can! read more

I stopped shopping here when I realised how badly they keep their small animals, especially the rabbits. Hard surfaces (bad for Rabbit's feet), nowhere near enough hay, tiny cages- terrible! They also sell rat poison and position it right above the dog bones etc which are all open. Unsafe, cruel practices. They may have decent stuff in stock but I wouldn't want to fund it! read more

I went and I bought a Kitten from here last week, a little black and white girl. I absolutely adore her I have called her Ninja because she is always stalking my feet. Anyways, this is a lovely pet shop, it is full of cool toys and stuff for cats and the staff were lovely and very knowledgable. They took the time to explain everything to me and put me together a pack which had everything I needed in it. I have a feeling that I will be spending most of my money on Ninja now lol. read more

All you need in a pet store. Good range of stuff, easy to get to, the staff really know what they are taking about and are nice. Since we've had the dog we've been down there a fair bit and enjoy it every time. These people are interested in pets. read more

I would never buy an animal from here again. Just last week I brought a guinea pig and was not told anything about it. For an hour or so she's had runny dirrahea and I've tried to get ahold of a vet but didn't get one on time as she has unfortunately died. I've not even had her a week. I looked online orppfor all the proper care before I got her and did everything I was supposed to do, I asked friends and family who had guinea pigs and all agreed we had it right so we brought her. Coombs didn't know what sex she was and had to go out the back to check. The only thing we were asked if if we had a cage. I will be looking into this. read more

It's an okay shop... Pity about the service, which is abysmal even by British standards. Much better range, prices and service available elsewhere locally and of course online. Me and my dog will not be back, even though I live two blocks away. Also, I find it a bit strange that Bardsley's fish and chips--two doors up--is far more welcoming to pets than this pet shop! read more

Coombs are great - they have everything you could want for your pets, a vast range thats kept very well stocked. Its the first place I go to for pet needs, even given that out of town pet supermarkets have been set up. If you can get the right member of staff, there's a lot of advice and knowledge there too. read more

I have bought fish, birds, rabbits from them, they have all the equipment, good prices, ooodles of time to help and demonstrate how things work. I never saw shops like this as a kid but my daughter loves going in here. except she wants a dog bed just cos its pink!!! we dont yhave a dog. ;) read more
