In terms of chintzy tourist stores, this one isn't bad. Hrm. "Isn't bad" is not the phrase I'm…read morelooking for. Perhaps "I enjoyed this powerful local chain of family-run stores that were an oasis in the desert of cruise ship funded retail that colonizes most of Alaska" is more apt. Anyone who has ventured into the great white north then turned left at Canada will be familiar with the redix diamond/jewel retail jungle the cruise ships maintain. Anyone who hasn't been yet isn't missing much, unless you dearly love a hard sell. North to Alaska is more charming than that, roughly six short blocks from the train station in Skagway. We enjoyed our walk and thought the peeks at the town were charming, even if I was sick. Buy without guilt here, because you are buying from actual locals instead of those weird imported diamond shops. The goods aren't going to be super unique--if you've been shopping in any other port or city along Alaska's coast, you've seen most everything--but that's not the point. Point is, this is worth a few minutes of your time. Accessibility notes: Doors open in. No braille signage. Store floor is cluttered for customers with mobility devices. High counters.

First store I went in to buy a post card. Sign said .35 each or 3 for $1.00. Only needed one so I…read morewent to pay. The woman told me the price for one card was a dollar. Said they were busy and can't make change. Didn't make sense but I went to get three anyway. Went to pay and the guy tells me the bank charges them for loose change. Never heard that before. There are other places in town where the post cards are cheaper and they don't grumble about loose change. Crossed this place off my list.

This is an interesting spot to check out while exploring Skagway. I really liked the history aspect…read moreof the shop, though the museum display section did seemed cramped. The gift shop in the front also had a somewhat limited selection compared to the massive stores by the port, but they still have nice items. I stopped in and picked up a beautiful Skagway waterglobe. It's definitely worth a quick stop if you are passing by.

Visited Skagway before the pandemic, and one place we stopped was Corrington Alaska Ivory. Combination of a gift shop store, with a small museum in the back. The store has all sorts of artifacts, trinkets, and ivory carvings for sale. Museum exhibits show the history of Alaska. Natives hunting the wooly mammoth 30,000 years ago. A mammoth tusk, with carvings of 14 mammoths and 31 hunters for sale for $52,500. That would make up for the thousands of free loading tourists fresh off the half dozen monster cruise ships visiting the museum daily in the past. History of Alaska illustrated in the museum. Painting of all the various animals in the landscape of Alaska, Russian rule from 1783-1867, purchase of Alaska, whale hunting by boat, settlement by gold rush travelers 1831-1921, and the Iditarod race held annually, with a sled and associated artifacts. Some of the ivory collection from extinct and endangered species such as the mammoth and pacific walrus. Why no covid 19 cases in Skagway? It's completely cut off from the outside. The coronavirus halted cruise ship sailings, and no way to reach Skagway by land from the rest of Alaska, as borders closed at the Yukon, Canada, rendering the tourist as the most recent endangered species.
