One of my favorite things to do in a new town or city is check out the local grocery store/supermarket, and this one, THIS ONE, with actual real-live vegan options, is like a dream. Granted, I don't know how to read Dutch, so most of the ingredients were a mystery to me, but I've gotten pretty familiar at spotting the Dutch words for 'milk' 'egg' and 'cheese', so I felt fairly confident. I also have a Rotterdam-born friend with me for last-ditch translation if needed. The variety of foods was overwhelming, in the best possible way! I found an excellent vegan mayonnaise (the mayo was for a potato salad, which turned out excellent and impressed all the picnic-going omnivores), bought a round of Cheesley Mozzarella, and picked up a tiny package of vegan bratwurst, just for fun. I was sorely tempted by the rest of the refrigerated section and naturally by the chocolate aisle--so many amazing looking vegan chocolate bars, including a white chocolate. Whaaaaat?! I would shop here quite frequently if I lived here. A great selection of organic food with a healthy vegan section. If you're traveling through, this is a great store to stock up on a few special vegan treats, and there's vegan/vegetarian cafe right next door if you're hungry.

They sell a wide selection of fresh fish (which they'll clean for you if you buy it whole), live lobster and King crab and at the counter on the right they sell all kinds of delicatessens like lobster salad, shrimp cocktail, spreads, ready to eat fish and gravad lax. We had made reservations for ten people, but our group arrived in smaller groups over a period of an hour. The Fish Market was very understanding and patient with us, and we happily enjoyed some wine and oysters during this time. When we were finally all together and had ordered, the food was quickly prepared and served. Moreover, the dishes were presented beautifully and in a grand fashion; the portions are not small, at all. I had the pleasure of enjoying the sole (zeetong), which was very delicious, simply serves with a cup of clarified butter. A perfect combination. The rest of the table enjoyed the mussels, the cold seafood platter, and a mixed grill. Everybody enjoyed their food very much, and it must be said that our group included an Australian top chef; she too was impressed by the quality of the food. One batch of mussels were unfortunately cold when they arrived to the table, but when we pointed this out, the host apologized and was happy to take it back and produce a new, fresh serving. The design and atmosphere of the restaurant is interesting; unlike other restaurants, the Fish Market doesn't care for dimly lit lights or red chairs. Rather, with the white tiles and industrial lamps, they have tried to make it look and feel like you are in the back-end shop of a fish monger. As eerie as that may sound, it isn't. Strangely enough, it makes for the perfect place to have some good quality seafood. Overall, the quality of the food was extremely well, which, in combination with the great service and atmosphere, makes The Fish Market my new favorite in town.
