Befitting its location in the Victoria Quarter it doesn't stock many of those cheap, tacky cards featuring naff cartoons and 'hilarious' lewd jokes. Expect more of a refined selection, several featuring vintage photographs or interesting stylised illustrations. I wouldn't say it's the best card shop I've ever been to but it definitely tops the offerings of most high street card shops with many more unusual finds than say, Clinton Cards and it should have something to suit everyone.

Bayliffe and Lupton house a whole variety of specialist gift cards from a variety of designers, from beautifully painted prints, to exquisite photography to humourous vintage photograph and caption cards. It has a huge range of different gift cards and will cover all the standard areas, but makes the difference by really finding some special designers. As well as this they sell other related goods, wrapping, canvas prints and the odd trinket or gift item, but the main reason for visiting is the quality of the gift cards. I can always choose a special card that really says something about who I am buying for, which makes all the difference when you are sending to someone special. You might pay a little more than usual, but in my book it's worth it.

In terms of style these guys seem to have my look down. Vintage styled shirts, (one in particular that I coveted had some incredible detail on the neck but alas it was dolly pink, which just isn't me) and interestingly tailored trousers, with more than a few cute dresses to boot. I've found the overall quality of the material is pretty high, which is a massive jump from the tacky plastic based cloths of Primarni, and the pricing is just under the line of the likes of Warehouse, French Connection and River Island. Whilst I'd prefer to buy something unique from a vintage shop, for some staple pieces to match in with what I've got these guys are just the business. On average the staff encounters I've had have been pleasant and whilst I wouldn't go for the shoes they've on offer, as I don't believe the quality is really there, overall you can't really go wrong with DP. They're brother branch Burtons is also great for quality men's clothing. I've already reviewed it, but it's worth mentioning I bought an entire suit, including shoes, for my boyfriend a while back for about £150. Really great value!

From their signage you can glean the impression that they are trying to be the smooth mac daddy of newsagents, but let's face it, there isn't much inside that makes it a superior newsy experience over any of the other places near by. For my money I prefer to go to the central news stall outside the new big Sainsburys, since the lady there is so totally Yorkshire and dry humoured! But failing that, this place is as good as any.

Being only a small town I am sure that many make use of this handy stationers. It's always nicer to go indie than big chain, and there is a Cartridge World about 10 minutes or so away, but I would choose Lidgett Hill every time. Why? The extra mile an indie store will always go to for their customers, there's always the personal touch! It's got all the usual things that you would hope for in a stationers, hoards of pens and such, papers of all varieties, folders and office supplies - no stone unturned they've pretty much covered everything. However, as you'll notice by their notices, they do offer more than the things you might expect as well! Given our recent bout of snow, which did seem relentless, they have compiled a special collection of 'snow day activities' for the children stuck at home during the impossible snow days! I realise that it's a bit of cheeky marketing, but it was pretty cute and innovative! Essentially, these kits were made up of colouring books, crayons, puzzles and so on. Still, better than the idiot box, right? All in all, it's a ok with me!

This place was a bit of a mixed bag. There are 2 aisles to the shop, (the divider dedicated to dated greetings cards), On the left, there is everything you'd expect from a stationers: pens, pencils, pads of paper, folders and display folders, pencil cases selotape etc. On the right of the counter , tucked in the corner is acryllics, sketch pads and paintbrushes. I have to be honest, and say that I thought their arts materials were pretty overpriced. The quality of the paint was a mid-range brand, but I felt they were asking for much more than it is worth, and indeed is priced in competing city centre shops and also student unions. They do have an interesting supply of goods though. They sell many different childrens colouring books, party bags, stamps, stickers of all sorts, and card making kits, but I did get a niggling feeling that perhaps the local community was not making the most of its stationers, but instead, opting for cheaper well-known establishments.

I love the range of designer skirts and dresses they stock, which are really feminine and pretty, as well as totally individual and not at all high street. Their shoes are great too. We paid an extra £15 for the delivery of this chest freezer and definitely did not receive 15…read morepounds worth of service. In total I believe the staff were here for 4 minutes and were itching to leave as soon as they looked at my doorframe and refused to attempt to try and find a way to get the freezer into my living room and informed me multiple times "we arent paid to do this". This is unacceptable considering I paid money to deliver it so yes, they are paid to do this. They lazily informed me that I should take the hinges off but when I asked if they would I was shot down with a "no. I'm not paid for that". Clearly the staff have an attitude problem and zero customer service skills. Taking advantage of the fact that people require delivery of items and charging them only to have the staff almost leave it in the hallway is disgraceful. I asked if taking the hinges off would guarantee it would go in, as if it didn't it would mean we would have to return it and I'm guessing the company wouldn't have accepted it if the hinges had been removed. They did not give me any sort of guarantee that it would fit in. One person suggested tape measuring but the staff did not take this into account and just verbally said "I'm sure it would fit" I understand they have other jobs to get to but this attitude is disgusting and they shouldn't have a time frame that's less than 5 minutes to deliver this item. The staff forced my elderly father to lift the sofas and push the door and pretty much get it in ourselves. I would hope the staff members would go through some sort of disciplinary service as I myself have worked in retail and if I had spoken to customers like your staff did today I am 100% sure I would have been dismissed.

So we went into this shop initially as a time filler but were glad we did. it was clean and well set out. The lady was very friendly and there was some really nice things for saleand more than we expected as it is a fairly small shop. We were in a while but because we wanted to be, no longer just to fill time.Just after this a friend moved to Thirsk and when I visited her I made sure that I made a return visit. She became a regular visitor and was glad to have found it.
