Visited this cute little Oakland yarn shop on a busy Saturday. It was toward the end of the 2025 Bay Area Yarn Crawl, plus they were having a trunk show. I've wanted to check out this shop for many years and wasn't disappointed. They have lots of beautiful yarn in many different fibers, weight, and colors. You can even pick out specific natural colors to dye it. They also offer fabric, books, bags, and tons of cute accessories for knitting and sewing. They were prepared for the crowds-- there were many friendly staff members on the floor offering assistance. One person had made stitch markers with the evil eye symbol and was handing them out. I have been a fan of this store for over 3 years without ever visiting it in person. I had plans to go out for a weekend excursion to either take a class or participate in an event just for fun. I subscribed to their fiber club for the past 3 years probably more due to being a long distant fan, versus love of the 4 shawl patterns and fiber you sign up for as part of the subscription each year. Well, the infatuation and fun bubble has burst and reality became clear over the last few months of working way too hard while trying to buy more fiber to supplement one of their older fiber/pattern subscriptions. One ask turned into multiple emails of questions and inquiries. Each one made me feel worse and worse since it felt like what I was asking should have been just part of the initial response. I also could have likely gotten all taken care of in one call, but they never answered the phone during their business hours? The $9 shipping on top of the $32 for the 3.5 ounces of fiber was a bit over the top in my opinion, so I bought 2 additional skeins of yarn to qualify for the "over $125" free shipping option. The final blow was when my order, 8 calendar days later still hadn't shipped and I was reminded via another email inquiry response, that orders ship 6-7 working days after being placed. With Sun and Mon not being working days for them, who knows when really I would have received the order? I realized being a fan was too hard and I finally gave up. I asked to be refunded for the order and also next years fiber club subscription, which would have been my 4th year of being part of the "club". Fortunately they complied, but there wasn't an email confirming my request, except for the automated refund emails. So apparently the separation was a mutual one. I happily "invest" in small businesses I believe in and love buying things to support them. But this one is no longer in my "investment portfolio" of stores. Granted they did nothing "wrong" based on their business rules, but the love I felt from afar was obviously unjustified and has now evaporated up in smoke. It was a nice run and maybe in the future when the frustration dissipates, things may change. But I realize now how important Customer Service is, as part of the purchase. I didn't really feel special, nor appreciated as a Customer, but more like just a number and someone they had to respond to. After my first fabulous experience over three years ago, guess it likely has always been like this, I just was finally able to take my rose colored glasses off. read more

went in today as it's my local walking distance shop that i have never visited before. the prices seemed fair but all the colors were so muted and sad. i was looking for some vibrant jewel tones. i was also weirded out that they have a "please wear a mask" sign in multiple places but no one else was masked in the store and customers were actively coughing. it's a nice shop if you like beige, sage, and rust tones but otherwise avoid. read more

A Verb For Keeping Warm has got to be one of the best local yarn shops (or LYS, if you are hip to the lingo) in the U.S. If you love fiber arts and are sustainability-minded, you will be in heaven here. All of AVFKW's own yarns are gorgeous natural fibers, naturally dyed in-house, and they also carry beautiful yarn from other (mostly smaller) producers that are consistent with their principles. I don't sew as much as I knit, but I've been wanting to try some of the beautiful fabric I've seen on the website, too. They even have naturally-dyed embroidery floss. The prices here are on the expensive side, but you are paying for quality and social and environmental consciousness. I learned a long time ago that when hand-making things, it is not worth putting precious time and effort into a project only to make it with low-quality materials that don't function well long-term or are harmful to us and the environment. The people here are great and knowledgeable- with no snobby gatekeeping b.s.- AND they have an in-store ball winder you can use for free to wind your yarn purchase, which I always thought was a really nice extra. I don't live in the Bay Area anymore, but am still always keeping AVFKW in mind for supplies and project ideas because it's basically the cutting edge of "slow fashion." read more

I first encountered AVFKW at Stitches West and absolutely LOVED their booth. I bought shawl kit and have finally started knitting with Annapurna. I stopped by the store on my East Bay Yarn Store crawl and was disappointed with the service. The staff was aloof and was a complete contrast to the service they were providing at Stitches West. I think they had a majority of the Shibui, Quince and Co., and a healthy MadTosh seelction. I even saw my beloved Woolfolk yarn. Parking was fairly easy to find on a Sunday on San Pablo. No real place to sit and knit for community knitting. Two very adorable shop dogs! read more

Was able to buy spin cycle yarn here which is usually hard to find. I think I'm in love. This carefully curated yarn shop should be on every knitters must visit list. The space is inviting. The staff is friendly. The shop dog is cute. Best of all, everything on offer, from the yarn to the fabric to the thread, is made from a natual fiber. They have enough of everything, too. Nothing is worse than falling in love with a skein of somethimg fabulous and not being able to buy it because there isn't enough in the store to actually make that sweater/afghan/scarf you've had your eye on. The fabric section is bright and cherful. They don't have a ton of buttons, but the ones they do have are fun. Same with the notions. Definitely one of the best shops I have ever explored and is always a destination must when visiting the bay. They have such a top notch selection of yarns that you won't be able to find in many shops (I'm referring to Brooklyn Tweed and Quince & Co of course). I love that from inside the shop you can see hand dyed yarn drying on the racks outside and they also sell yarns and dyes for you to try at home (I had to resist this time around but next time for sure!). I highly recommend visiting if you are looking for some quality yarn. I also love their fabric collection, but since I'm not much of a sewer (yet) I can't say I know what I was looking for... Finally got to check out this yarn store in Oak-Town. I took two spinning classes over the weekend. The store is bright and artfully decorated. Hardwood floors and friendly staff add to the warmth of the place. They dye roving in-house. In fact, they had the colorful fiber on a drying rack when I was there! This place makes me deliriously happy! The yarns and rovings come in a wide range of colors and weights, with many luxury fibers such as merino, alpaca, etc. I told my BF that I wanted everything in the store. And that was the truth! :) Parking is a bit tough, because it's street parking only. Also, I didn't think the neighborhood was that safe, but keep in mind that I'm from the 'burbs. Prices are quite reasonable for this grade of fiber. I highly recommend the spinning classes. Class size is small, the instructor is helpful, encouraging, and welcomes all questions. Before, I was mostly a knitter with a spinning wheel that gathered dust. Spinning felt boring and repetitive...I didn't like it. I learned some great new techniques and now I feel more passion for the craft. read more

Staff is amazingly helpful, and it was one of the few yarn shops I've been in where I haven't been immediately fixated on by the staff because I'm under 40 years old. I'm used to being constantly bugged, or interrogated about my knitting background, or just generally treated like an outsider. The yarn here is stunningly beautiful, high quality, and available in a plethora of ball/ skein styles. Beautifully dyed as well. There's a small selection of really interesting books, both on the subject of all things handcrafted, as well as unrelated topics (like the mushroom book I was drooling over). There are also several tantalizing knick knacks and tools that would make great gifts. Ample employees are at the ready to assist customers. There was even a knitting group chatting away around a cozy table at the back of the store. Lots of colorful patterns of fabric for sewing; a good selection of hooks and needles (including the bamboo variety I like) at prices not much higher than I've seen elsewhere. The store has a really great vibe and seems passionate about community. As a supporter of local small business and as an artist, I understand that the products offered will cost more, because they're not made cheaply or mass produced. That being said, to my heart's dismay, I absolutely cannot afford the price tag on their products (outside of the needles and hooks, etc.), Knowing I can't actually buy anything from here is why the star rating is marked down. The business might see that as unfair. But if its desired products are unattainable for those who are financially limited, that effects my view of its services. If they acquire a middle of the line item, I'd love to put my money towards that. I would encourage people who are financially sound to stop by this store, though. If you saw my costume - the Amazonian Mardi Gras-diator Viking Princess one - at the Yelp Elite Prizefighter party, and thought to yourself...where does one find such stunningly unique, purple, blue and gold-gilded skull fabric that can so easily be thrown across one's shoulders as a DIY toga? Well, I'll give you a hint. It's a verb... ...For Keeping Warm. Duh! I had peered into this shop during so many visits to Actual Cafe and was thrilled to have an excuse to venture in. The fabrics are gorgeous, quirky, and quality - in a completely different league than someplace like JoAnn's. This is a shop for the truly crafty, a place you can go without a specific project in mind, but leave with loads of inspiration and all the goods you need to manifest it. The ladies were super helpful. I told them about my strange mission to find a gold-ish fabric to make a Gladiator costume with, and they directed me to this crazy gold skull material. Jackpot! She also suggested this really lovely green and brown died silk ribbon to use as a "leather"-looking arm wrap. Double Jackpot! I also spied some fabric with a mustache print. Inept service. I trotted in cheerfully at 5 on a Friday afternoon after fighting traffic to go 40 minutes out of my way to stop and get some summery spinning fiber....I was hoping for some cotton sliver, maybe some bamboo top, or some tussah. Clerks were clueless and clearly more interested in gossiping about the customer that had just left than in helping me. As i stood in front of the spinning fiber display, i asked, "Hi, do you have any cotton sliver? I'm looking for some non woolen fibers to spin. `I don't even know what that is," replied the sales clerk, who had eventually mosied over to help me. Poking ineffectully at the bumps of merino, bfl, etc, she added, "This is like where, um, i guess our spinning stuff is." She appealed to the clerk at the register, who in a tart tone added, "Everything we have is out. I don't even know what cotton sliver is, either." Having thus congratulated each other on their ignorance, they returned to their primary responsibility of conversing with each other. I took a desultory look around the store, (during which I found anther display of fiber, btw), and left, without further acknowledgement. And now i shall place an online order. This establishment has often had an arrogant tone, sometimes faint, and sometimes overt, like today. Other than their very hospitable employee Sarah, who has always been attentive and kind, they have chronically ignored or under-served customers. They should see how helpful people are at real old-timey yarn shops like the one in Alameda. The upshot is that we spinners and knitters have many choices and stores won't get my custom if they can't make the human touch outweigh higher prices, sales tax, and smaller selection. read more

You know what it is about this place that makes it so Meh? It's that it can't decide what it wants to be. There are some (interesting) fabrics, some yarn, some spinning fibers, some random linen clothing, some hipstery packaged tailor's scissors and chocolates, and some dye materials. I have the sense that someone there wants to be a dyer for honest and truly but just doesn't have the backbone to make the store about that instead of 80 other things looking as though they posed for an Instagram shoot. The staff is polite but not knowledgeable. When I go to a store, I want to talk to someone who knows as much or more than me about the subject at hand, not look at me blankly. And despite hosting an embroidery teacher and selling samplers, the embroidery supplies were woefully lacking--there weren't even any needles to speak of for sale and the floss was in one tiny box full of drab colors. It's a shame because the shop could be so much more. Even if the focus changed to only hand-dyed yarns and textiles, that would be vastly better than this unfocused mishmash. In short, get a focus, get some knowledgeable staff, and be the store you could be rather than what you think other people want. read more

If you see the "Yarn and Fiber" sign on Seventh Street, that means the dyer is open for business. But before you agree to a shopping detour, make sure you have something to read - - - because your girlfriend is going to be in there for ages. I finished two sections of the SF Chronicle before she re-emerged from the shop. I was beginning to worry that she wasn't just buying yarn, she was actually knitting it. Anyroad, she was happy as larry with her shopping. She told me that the proprietor buys 'virgin' plain yarn and dyes it herself using organic stuff like crushed-up insects, etc.. Apparently, she learned how to do this while living in India. This dye lady was extremely knowledgeable, and very good at explaining stuff. Yarns ranged from mohair to mourinho (jose?). She had ones that would be good for socks and scarves, and chunkier ones, that would be good for jumpers. There were no solid colours, and there wasn't tonnes and tonnes of different yarns - - - but there were interesting yarns that you're not going to find anywhere else. She also sells silk, patterened scarves that some bloke in India sends over. She also was good at promoting other folk, and had a bunch of sample scarves from local knitters (with their own designs). The studio is open from Thursday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Seems like there is other arty stuff in the building to explore, too. read more

Awesome, awesome. Go here. I'm a fiber junkie, and this shop was like walking into heaven. Spinning fiber in the most luscious varieties, in gentle, naturally hand-dyed hues. Beautiful yarn, some hand-spun, some milled, and all dyed by the owner, who was cheery and lovely and had a buddy with a dachshund there. You will not find cheap yarn here or a variety of brands - it's all artisanal by the owner. However, you *will* find a remarkable variety of fibers - camel, silk, mohair, alpaca...and more, I know. I was just overwhelmed by the beauty. We were visiting Berkeley/San Francisco for a long weekend, and this was a must-see. The owner was super nice and also gave us an awesome itinerary to follow on a rainy day after finding her shop - Lacis, and Crixa Cakes. It was a perfect day. read more

This store is my home away from home. Besides all the amazing yarn and fiber* from both outside lines (Sanguine Gryphon, hello!) and the house ones (yak/silk nom nom nom), Kristine has made a wonderful space to just hang out. I swear I come in at least once a week and spend several hours knitting or spinning. There are at least two tables to work at should you need one, and at minimum a dozen chairs. Hell, there's even a wooden rocking chair should you feel the need to really granny-out as you work, or, as I've seen more than once, get your baby to sleep. Did I mention Verb is kid-friendly in a non-screaming and running around way? This isn't a playplace, but it's not a For Serious Grown-Ups Only place either. And, yes, the products again. Amazing unique fabrics; a solid notions area (nothing crazy, but the basics are stocked); books, including Ann Weaver's Craft Work Knit and other indie titles; needles in many sizes and lengths; amazing artisan stitch markers; well-crafted spindles and spinning wheels; hand-woven and/or hand-dyed scarves; natural dyes and accoutrement ; and yarnfiberyarnfiberfiberyarnyarnfiberyarn. Madelinetosh galore, Sanguine Gryphon, Isager, Miss Bab's, Bodega Pastures, Sweet Grass, there's cashmere/silk and hard-wearing rustic blends to satisfy all. Oh, and that Malabrigo stuff too. I've heard people like it. Anyways, the short and long is that I drool over everything even though I was probably just there for six hours the day before, I drive from Concord just to hang out, and the pitter-patter of Cleo's feet makes my heart warm. Seems to also be the Season of the Cookie and Delicious Treat at Verb right now, because every time I go in there's goodies, if not homemade goodies! *100% acrylic free! I can actually use everything she stocks! Which makes it hard! But also hedonistically delicious! read more

This is an excellent store. I'm really miss shopping here. I loved listening to them work away in their studio. This place has one of the best selections of yarn I've ever seen- they even have inexpensive options, which is nice! Customer service is solid- they really seem to put effort into hiring good people. Yarn - Excellent stock, amazing colors dyed in house as well as an outstanding selection of commercial yarn. Price - Completely comparable with any other place carrying good product. Staff - Consummately professional, each one of them rather unnervingly cute. Table - If you're in luck, this table is just the right size for an impromptu ping-pong match. Neighborhood - Improved. The best thing in the area used to be Creative Depot (moved) and Best? Fire? which, thankfully is still there to confuse all of us. The Actual Cafe next door is great, except on weekends when they don't allow laptops which is the kind of pretension (God bless 'em) that Verb would never share. Parking - Always easy. Have never had a problem, though I don't mind walking half a block. Bonus perks - Cookies? Winding your yarn? Cute lil sweet Cleo dog making sure things are running smoothly? Check. Great space with passionate owners. What a great store. This isn't the kitchen sink variety of yarn store that carries every brand, but they have a great selection of yarns and fibers and are passionate about the quality of the products they carry. They also have drop spindles, spinning wheels, and fiber prep tools. They have interesting classes that go beyond Knitting 101. Drop spindle classes (great instructor), wheel spinning, fleece selection, foraging dye mushrooms (how cool!), hand quilting and applique. I'm puzzled by Julia S's 2 star review which seemed to be based on the fact that they didn't offer to leave the register (and other customers in line) and wind her yarn. Of the yarns stores I've been to (and in the 18 years I've been knitting, I've been to a bunch), most don't offer to wind my yarn. Most have a ball winder that customers can use and most offer if you appear unsure how to use it. I'm even sure most will wind your yarn if you ask, but why give a poor review because they didn't offer and you had to ask? Verb's new store is a warm, comfortable space that makes me want to sit down and knit for a while or break out my spinning wheel. It is a welcome addition to the Bay Area fiber arts scene. read more

5 Yelp stars does not adequately describe my love for AVFKW. It's more like a Spinal Tap 11 stars. Okay, what am I trying to say here? AVFKW rocks! My love affair began several years ago when I found their business card in a weaving studio. I loved the name, "A Verb for Keeping Warm" and could not wait to see their fiber and yarn... Time travel to the present...My love of all things beautiful and fibery and AVFKW go hand in hand. I am passionate about knitting, spinning, weaving, (and now, quilting and applique) thanks to AVFKW!!! I have taken so many amazing classes at Verb, including Spinning for Socks, Natural Dyeing, Hand Quilting and Applique, and many, many classes on spinning specific fibers like cotton, yak, merino, polwarth, and silk. Class sizes are small, the teachers have all been excellent, and I always leave feeling inspired and eager to try out what I have learned. From the dreamy peacock queen in the window to the lovely spindle trees and waterfalls of hanging scarves, the store is one of my favorite places to be. It has the most luscious and beautiful yarns, fiber, and fabric in the Bay Area, hands down! Much of the yarn/fiber is hand-dyed using natural dyes by Kristine and it is drop-dead gorgeous. If a skein of Verb yarn could walk into a party, everyone's heads would turn and jaws would drop. Everything I have made with Verb fiber/yarn/fabric I have loved as it is infused with Verbness. In addition to everything else, AVFKW has really nurtured and provided a community for fiber-minded people like myself. The new store is a great place to hang out and knit and spin. The second Saturday of the month is Open Spin/Knit and they are also open late on Thurs. and Fri. nights until 8pm. I have met so many fantastic people through Verb and can't imagine the Bay Area fiber community without it. We are so lucky!!! So if you haven't been to AVFKW, you owe it to yourself to go! I just love this place. I feel so lucky to have Verb in my area. I am an avid knitter and sewer and I always find something there to inspire me. They have an amazing selection of yarn and fabric of really high quality. The space itself is so beautiful, so rich, open and well lit. The usually have a trunk show or items they have crafted to give you plenty of ideas. They offer a variety of classes and often have a well known knitter/ designer dropping by for a book signing, a talk or a demonstration. The staff is knowledgeable and very helpful. If you are a sewer, knitter or wanna be crafter, support this store. This is the type of small business that really deserves our support. read more

I love that Verb marries spinning/knitting/sewing and exudes appreciation for all things handmade. These days I spend much more time sewing than knitting, so I'll speak to that aspect. Pros: -Gorgeous space--bright, airy, well designed. Does indeed lead to feeling warm and cozy. And inspired to make things beautiful. -well-curated, lovely fabrics. I'm drawn to a much higher percentage of their fabrics, even though the collection is not especially large. -Remarkably friendly staff. I enjoy hearing from them, and do every time. -Owner is knowledgeable, accessible, and very friendly. Cons: -Verb is not a big box store (this of course is a PRO, not CON) so the space is not large enough to fit the amount of fabric choices I would want ideally. So I'm not able to abandon trips to another (non-chain) fabric store altogether. -It's a bit pricey. -I'd love it if even more of the staff sewed, too. The ones I've talked with seem to be very beginners (or not sewers), so they've been unable to answer questions on that front. (The owner is expert enough for me, but she's not always there.) -Would be great to take a class there on sewing clothes. Evidently they used to, but that teacher is currently unavailable. So I vote for finding a way to make this happen. I'd sign up in a heartbeat! I love AVFKW. I live 5 hours away by car. The shop was worth every minute of the trip. The owner and her staff were incredibly helpful on my first visit with a friend. The shop is lovely and spacious with more than enough seating. They were attentive enough when I had questions and polite enough to just allow me to browse all their wonderful inventory at my own pace. I have phoned twice since my original visit to purchase additional yarn. The first time I phoned, the employee answering remembered me and thought I was calling about a special order I had placed. I wasn't, but Sarah graciously spent time helping me select various colors of yarn for a project. The yarn arrived promptly a couple days later. The second time I phoned both an employee, Karen, I believe, and the owner, Kristine, helped me select yarn for a second project. I could not ask for better service or quality yarn, either their own or a few select brands of high quality. I am looking forward to another excuse to make the trek up to the shop. read more
