I had just gotten out of the doctor's office and had trouble starting my car. I've typically owned older cars with a reputation for durability. The yellow van guy ran his checks and verified my suspicion that the starter was no longer working. I knew that a dealer for the car's marque was fairly close by but I didnt want to go there. I asked him if there was a repair facility I could go to that wasn't part of a dealership, and he recommended AAA's auto repair center in Davis. A flatbed came for my car and me. There Hoffmann's staff said they'd be able to take care of the problem. I live in West Sacramento and they arranged a Lyft ride for me to my home. The following workday, the starter was replaced and my car was repaired ahead of schedule. I would recommend this place for any service needed by your car, routine or major. read more

I decided to try AAA Davis Auto Repair because I had seen pretty good reviews. The battery on my car needed replaced and that seemed a pretty simple test for price and service. Both stank. First, Aaron at the front desk told me they would test the battery and if that wasn't the problem they would refund the cost of the test and put in the new battery. The estimate was $159. Next thing I know, he sends me an email with a list of 3 must do items: Battery, spark plugs and cabin air filter; and a long list of should dos. including shock absorbers and struts, belts, hoses, you name it because of the age of the car (2010). Pretty scary and upsetting. I ask them to do the must dos forgetting I just changed the oil so the cabin air filter probably did not need changing. They did not send me an estimate of costs and I forgot to ask and just guessed the cost would be around $600. HA! The bill was $1,113.63! $276.82 for the battery (not outrageous but higher than the original estimate they gave me), $113.16 for the air filter (a bit high), and $735.75 for the spark plugs. That was the killer. Kelly Blue Book estimates the cost of replacing spark plugs on a 2010 RAV4 to be between $246-398, so they charged me almost double what it should have been. I will never go back and I do not recommend them. I'm sticking with Center City. read more

They discovered that the belt tensioner was not up to snuff and replaced it without increasing the total repair cost (a $180 value). All work was started and completed the same day. I can always trust that they will tell me what they see on my car even when going in for routine services such as oil changes. While there is a Jiffy Lube 10 minutes from my house I'd rather make the drive to take our vehicles here. We know the work will be done right and the cars are always better after we leave. Hoffmann Automotive exceeded all my expectations. I had my catalytic converter stolen and it took two months to get in. It was a horrible experience (especially after my rental car got stolen too, which left me with no wheels). They kept me updated along the way and never got annoyed when I called to check in. They were very empathetic and I appreciated that human quality. My insurance gave them a certain amount of money to pay for the replacement and there was some left over, so they used that extra money to secure the piece so it couldn't be stolen again. This was something I really wanted done and something they absolutely could have charged me for, but they didn't. I was so happy to get my car back from them, especially when I saw that they had washed it and set the clock (something I was too lazy to do). The people at Hoffmann Automotive are clearly exceptionally thorough and really take pride in what they do. Unfortunately, mechanics have a bad reputation of trying to rip people off, but Hoffmann Automotive is the exact opposite of this. They have integrity. I hope I have no further automotive issues, but if I do, I know exactly where I'm taking my car. read more

Everyone here was very nice, but the quote they gave us for an alternator replacement was insane. Close to 1k- other shops quoted close to 500; lowest estimate I got was 380 but everyone else was less than half their quote. Even the aaa tow truck people who helped me tow my car to another shop were shocked by the estimate. Anyone I spoke to about it who knows cars saw it as it is- highway robbery. It was very frustrating to have our car towed here just to have it towed elsewhere so we didn't get super ripped off. read more

I got my car towed into this shop. I was told I needed to have my battery and fuse box replaced- I was charged a total of $650. I am a young woman who needs a car to travel to and from work. My parents are not here in Davis to help me either. Considering I was in a bind and in need of help, I paid the total. I dropped off my rental car since I was told my car was fixed and ready for pick up. As I turn it on, my check engine light and four other lights are lit on my dash. Clearly, it was not fixed. Had they driven my car around the block for a final review before calling me, they would have noticed the lights on. They ran a quick test and let me know what the issue was and apologized for the inconvenience. No support or plan was given to fix this considering they had charged so much already. All I got was an apology. I was recommended to leave it when ultimately, I was probably going to be charged even MORE without the problem being fixed. Overall, unhappy with the way corners were cut (not driving it/inspecting before pick up). Feel they took advantage due to my age, gender and need for service. No longer returning. read more

My car broke down and left me stranded in Davis (70 miles from home), so I just picked this place because AAA was associated with it, but it was so lucky! The mechanic was so kind and knowledgeable and took the time to explain what he'd found and show me the problem (The coolant housing had cracked open). Any other place could have lied and said I needed to replace the radiator--I wouldn't have known the difference, so I appreciate how honest they were and that they didn't take advantage of my obvious ignorance in all things car related. Every person I dealt with there was warm and friendly--quite a different experience from my local garage where I usually go. There's an additional thing I need to do eventually for my car and I'm tempted to drive all the way to Davis again just to have their mechanic, Russ, work on it. great place! read more

I got off the freeway in my mini Cooper and something immediately under the car was dragging. I limped into Hoffman automotive at 3:00PM and they put it up on the lift. Yesterday when I parked I pulled into far over the white parking space curb. When I backed out it caught the bumper and pulled it back releasing the under board. They treated me great and gave me a great price on a repair that could have cost me triple if I hadn't done my research. After the mechanic I had gone to for 15 years closed, I had my newly-acquired, very old truck towed here after it stopped cold in the street. Hoffman's had been recommended by the road service that towed me. They informed me that the diagnostic would be $185 - ouch. But I figured, alright, it's an old truck, I knew something might go wrong, so let's figure it out. The car had simply run out of gas and the fuel gauge didn't work (again, old truck, new owner). They still charged me the full $185. Worked hard to justify it too, cleaning things out and checking things I hadn't asked them to. My old place would have sent me home with no charge, or maybe $50 for 1/2 hr labor. Yes the staff are all very nice and the waiting room is clean, and the dog is very sweet. Scheduled an oil change for my first time here, since we just moved to Davis. Walked in and everyone seemed very nice. I'm 7 months pregnant so if you've either been, or been with us women through pregnancy, I'm sure your aware of our occasional lack of proper cognitive function due to all of our blood going to our bellies instead of our brains My point for sharing this is because I believe the man at the counter completely took advantage of me. He tried to charge me over 100.00 for a simple oil change. As I walked out and looked at the invoice, I saw 35.00 for labor, and 65.00 for "parts"! plus taxes. The "oil" should cost no more then 12.00 (my Ford Fusion is nothing fancy). I inquired with the man as to why it was so expensive, assuming it must have been a mistake. He apologized and said yes, it should actually be 75.00. But then that would mean that the labor costs of 35.00 is less then the "parts" cost of 40.00. The only cost for "parts" should be the 12.00 oil. I may be pregnant, but I'm not an idiot. We will not be taking any of our other 4 cars to Hoffman Automotive again. read more

My husband and I have taken our cars here for over a year. While his is just 2 years old and only needs routine maintenance, mine is 8 years old with the usual wear and tear than accompanies the 106,000 miles I've got on it. Hoffman has been very professional in providing routine maintenance and repair work. I especially appreciate that they tell me which maintenance and repair is crucial and which is desirable. They also provide a heads up--for example, that I'll need new breaks at my next oil change. In addition, they always open on time --if not early-- to ease those before work drop offs and complete the repairs in the time promised. The shop is very clean and welcoming. I'm sure there are less expensive auto places around but I have NO complaints about the level of service I get for my money from Hoffman Automotive.
