If you're following my reviews in any capacity, you'll be aware this is a priority for me -- courteous is one thing, bantz is another! I do like a fun bit of chat, and these guys have got it. It makes the place feel even more fun, if wine and tapas isn't enough for your jollies. Here's what else: lots of wine and tapas. I've not tried the bites (I will soon now that I've remembered) but the wines are great. I'm so far from being a connoisseur that I won't even begin to try and explain, just rest assured that this is the place to un-wine-d aprés work. I like how they've managed to make the place feel European, despite being on Duncan Street. (Just don't look out the window or the dream will be shattered.) I need to get back here for a more in depth investigation of the scene.

Initially we only went in for some wine and olives but the staff were so hospitable they brought out some lamb kubbah in salad and a spicy pumpkin soup for us to have as well on the house! The Haddock fish cake on a bearnaise sauce was excellent - crispy on the outside, soft inside, with definite flakes of fish, none of that mashed up rubbish one sometimes gets. However the lamb steak which followed was rather grisly and therefore too chewy. It was served with cauliflower cheese and deliciously sweet carrots, but oddly no potatoes. Maybe I got a bad one, but the lamb was disappointing. I may visit again and try something else, and if so edit this post. Bill was £18.

I do like wine, and it always has to be red, preferably a fruity one, but that's as far as it goes for me.. Names of wines? Nope. Flavours of wines? Nada. So I asked the bartender for a middle of the road, fruity, red. He recommended the Le Selezioni Cutaja, Nero d'Avola (confused face) and he looked like he knew his stuff, so with total faith in him that's what I went for. It was lovely. The bar itself is small but looks cosy. It wasn't particularly busy for a Tuesday evening but there was still a very pleasant atmosphere as I met some other Yelpers for pre-dinner drinks. As time goes on I can imagine this is the type of place I would like to sit for a few hours, order a meat and cheese board and try some different wines. This may have to involve building up my tolerance a little though, as usually 2 large glasses of red and I'm sloshed.

OH APERITIVI YOU SAY…read more Following my year in Bologna when I belatedly discovered Italian aperitivi culture (i.e. eating tiny free pieces of food along with your prosecco, negroni etc) I always get verrrry excited when I see it in the UK. Veeno apparently has a whole buffet on Wednesday, which I am excited to try. Meanwhile what we got was great - cheese and ham with excellent red wine (I got the "classic" which I really enjoyed). Will definitely be back here for drinks, it's a great stop off before, for example, Red's or Splendid Kitchen.

Spirited Wines obviously has a large selection of wines (which you can also drink in the bar…read moreupstairs) and have developed a strong whisky selection too, accompanied by tastings. Unsurprisingly, it's more expensive in here than online (a £110 bottle of whisky is £30 less online) but we probably would never have found out about it had we not gone in. There's a small bottled beer selection which has a large proportion of gluten free beers (better than M&S, Harvey Nichols or hangingditch). Everytime I have gone in I have found the staff to be really nice and helpful and it's nearly always the same people who I suspect are also the owners/managers.

This is sad state of affairs, as beer is in truth a more exciting, more wildly varying beverage that manages to remain as masculine as possible. Beer Ritz (laaavely play on words isn't it) is an absolute haven for beer lovers. With what seems like millions of varieties from all corners of the globe, beer taps on the counter and hugely knowledgeable and friendly staff, it is the stuff dreams are made of. A trip here makes your evening in with the boys all the more cultured (and lethal on some occasions) and is definitely worth it.
