First rate first experience. Referred by Whole Foods after learning they no longer do custom cupcake orders, and I needed two dozen for a college alumni party. Accordingly, we wanted the cupcakes to rep our school colors! Ordering process was made easy over the phone. The total was $50.37, and I did a mix of chocolate/white cakes and whipped/buttercream frostings. Saved $13 by opting for white frosting instead of dyed, which turned out GREAT because ABC Cake has colorful edible glitter that looked fabulous against the white frosting! Couldn't have been happier with the presentation, and the plastic clamshell containers made for easy transportation. Lots of people at the party asked where I'd ordered the cupcakes, which made me happy with my decision not to opt for cheap with Albertson's ($25) or Smith's ($20). The fact is that ABC Cake cupcake prices are the best in ABQ compared to similar boutique bakeries, and I'm happy to support any local business that hits the trifecta of quality, service, and cost. I have a friend who is going to get married and we were looking to get a cake sampling box. They don't actually offer any sample boxes, but they said they offer wedding appointments where they work through a couple different options and really have a more in-depth idea of what people want. We grabbed a couple of the little pastries, and they were really good. Not my favorite cake that I've ever had but pretty solid. I understand that mistakes happen, but this was really bad. My brother-in-law who was in hospice care, with not much longer to live, loved chocolate and asked for a chocolate cake. Due to his condition, he couldn't have sugar, so we asked for a 6" round sugar free chocolate cake. I also asked for sugar free chocolate icing/filling. They said they could only do sugar free vanilla icing/filling, but the chocolate cake could be done. I wasn't sure my brother-in-law was going to like that, so I said I would get back to them, but asked how much the cake would be. I was quoted $74, which seemed high, but thought maybe it costs more to make a sugar free cake and I just wanted to get it to make him happy before he passed. After checking with him, my brother-in-law said vanilla icing/filling was ok, but could it be a thin layer of icing/filling. I called ABC back to put in the order and pay for it. We asked for the message on the cake to be written in green (his favorite color) with standard decor also in green. The message was to say "Happy Chocolate Party!" The ABC employee said they could accommodate the requests, but the previous employee was new and quoted the price wrong. It ended up being $62.42, which still seemed expensive, but I didn't complain because it was less than the original quote. We picked up the cake 48 hours later, but saved it for dinner, after ABC had closed for the day. The cake looked good. It had the right message and decor in the right color, but when we cut into it, it was a white cake and the icing/filling was at least 1/2 inch thick. To the disappointment of my dying brother-in-law, it was not the chocolate cake with a thin layer of icing/filling that he asked for. I felt horrible. When I called to inquire about what happened with our order, I left a message. Someone returned my call and said the our order references a white cake. I said that was incorrect. In response, the ABC employee said, but we always go over the order with customers at time of pick up and you accepted it and you didn't call us when it happened. I said they were closed and I left a message the next day. I also said that I never heard them say white cake when I picked it up.... Maybe they said white icing/filling, but I did not hear them say white cake. I then said that the message on the cake said " Happy CHOCOLATE Party!". It doesn't take much common sense to know that some part of the cake had to be chocolate. Since they only make vanilla icing/filling, the only other part of the cake had to be chocolate. After I said this, she repeated her original response that we went over this when you picked it up. No acknowledgement that it could have been their mistake and essentially absolving any responsibility on their part and telling me it was my mistake for accepting it. The call ended with the employee saying she would talk to the owner and get back to me. It's been almost 2 weeks, my brother-in-law has passed, and I have yet to get a call back from anyone. The cake also tasted like cardboard, which I thought was due to it being sugar-free, which I was fine with. The lack of any empathy, acceptance of any responsibility, or a call back was inexcusable, hence my negative review... read more

Absolutely love love love the cupcakes here! The cupcakes are always soft and moist, have light and creamy frostings, and expertly decorated. I especially appreciate that they rotate monthly and specialty cupcakes in addition to the staple chocolate and vanilla flavors. This time me and the bf wanted to diversify the things we got from ABC Cake Shop. We got almond sticks, a coconut cut of angle cake, and a variety of cupcakes (6 total). The total was less than $25, which is epic for how much stuff we got. Their small cuts of cake are perfection for a small family or two. The frosting was whipped, smooth, with fresh coconut flakes and the inner was lovely, light, angel-food cake. The almond sticks were to die for in our morning coffee. That perfect sweetness meant for coffee dipping. The yellow cake/chocolate cake mix cupcakes had chocolate ganache in the center and blew my mind (yellow cake with chocolate frosting is my favorite). The red velvet mixed with yellow cake mixed cupcakes took the heavy sweet bite away from normally heavily sweet velvet cake. The strawberry cupcakes were super moist and light. Everything was super fresh. Price was perfectly reasonable. The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable about the products. So I can't say anything about the décor or the service, because my wonderful husband surprised me with baked goods after a particularly grueling day at work. I can say that every last crumb of the pastry was lovingly made and delightful. I am a big fan of the Devil Dog, which I found to be rich, chocolatey, and deeply decadent, and since Raz dislikes all sponge cakes, I didn't even really have to share! Raz and I agreed that the eclairs were super scrumptious and just downright pretty. It was also good fortune that Raz bought 2 carrot cakes, since that meant I actually got to try some. It was moist and full of carroty flavor, and the creamy frosting wasn't overpoweringly sweet, so my philosophy that one can't really go wrong with carrot cake holds up to another trial. I signed the waver that says that the colors will not be exact but it also says "colors like blue, green, RED, yellow, orange, pink, and purple print well " if that were true the employee would not have told me otherwise. They over charge for their edibl images and now I can't even use it. I suggest not getting edible images from here. I contacted ABC two days before I wanted my Dad's 90th birthday cake. I emailed the picture exactly how I wanted & spoke to the person there and they indicated there would be no problem with the colors or design. I paid for the cake along with other items in advance. I showed up to pick up the cake and it was completely wrong. It did not have the correct colors or even his name on it. They offered to write his name on top of the design which was the worst idea. The only option that made sense was to write his name on the side. I was so upset because it was such a special day. I also ordered specialty cookies which are usually sold out and they gave me the wrong cookies. We've been going to ABC over 15 years and their quality has always been great but this visit was very disappointing. Where else can you find a place that bakes professionally and that's all they do? Screw those supermarket bakeries. You need to go someplace where they bake from the heart. Neighborhood Bakeries are rare and I'm a fan of the tea rings here, blueberries specifically. I'm actually obsessed with the tea rings. I moved here from California and there is nothing like a tea ring. I feel like I can taste the butter melting in my mouth as the blueberries give me a bit of a spark.
