The WiFi never once worked in our room, and the staff kept making excuses, like they expected it would. But other guests had the same problem. We had to go outside or to the lobby to connect. There is no restaurant at the hotel, and it's a healthy walk to the downtown commercial area. Their bar/pub is nice and they will order food in for you, which we did one night. But it's not a real meal. Another night we did the 25 minute walk each way to a great restaurant, but had to be sure we got back before they locked the gate at 11pm. Hotel La Villa Eugene did have a few drawbacks we didn't expect.

When we checked in, we were asked if we had dinner plans and if there were anything that they could help us with. There is a one but thought and that is the breakfast. If you are looking forward to tucking into some fresh vegetables and fresh ingredients and larger choice of breakfast ingredients, it won't happen. The breakfast was very much focused on a selection of cold meats, couple of cheeses, some hard boiled eggs (cold by the time I had them), typical French pastries and selection of jams. They also have a small home made ready made fruit salads and juices ready for crabs in the small fridges. The breakfast: it is not bad by no means but it does leave you for wanting something more, a bit more " va va voom" for a five star hotel. The breakfast is the main reason for the evaluation of four stars.

I had Amex concierge make reservations for me just before I got on the transatlantic flight. There were no issues getting a table - I definitely saw empty tables. There is a car park behind the restaurant, I think it is locked at some point. We got the tasting menu - it was our first nice meal in France. Portion sizes were generous, we left stuffed. I can't remember everything we ate but 3 things stood out. We liked dessert the least. - The seaweed butter that comes with the bread. We still talk about it 2 years later. - The lobster risotto was perfection. - Lots of seafood.

The menus are great to have a broad overview and I raccomend to take once of those, even with the small two course meal plus dessert you will be filled up and happy. It was no an easy task and since we weren't in to paying the price of a small country's NBP it was even harder. By coincidence I stumbled upon Chez Eric Et Sylvie's page and sent away a mail. The next day we got a positive response about their B&B in Cremant. No pay in advance and the correspondence was easy and friendly. We arrived very late due to delays and dinner and Sylvie met us. Such a sweet lady! The house felt so typical french and in the middle of town. She showed us our room upstairs. I must say that the room looked like nothing I've seen before. Bright colors on the bed, cool details like old toys, a rocking horse and a statue of a servant in the corner. A bit over the top maybe and not something that everyone would like but I loved it. Comfortable bed with great pillows. The extra bed provided was nothing more than an air mattress on the floor so that's something I didn't like. Small but sufficient bathroom with a shower that glowed when the water was on, I call it disco shower! The breakfast was wonderful. Fresh bread, Croissants, all kinds of cheese, ham, yoghurt, berries, juice, coffee and candy. I would have liked some more veggies and eggs but it felt very french. What makes this place special is the lovely couple, Eric and Sylvie. Super friendly and gave us great tips on what to do while in Champagne. Make sure you take the time to talk to them and let them tell you what to do and ask them questions about Champagne. They are always willing to share what they can. I would definitely stay here again but I want to warn people afraid of spiders. I saw the biggest spider I've ever seen in Europe in our room. We killed it but for a while we weren't sure if that was even possible. Luckily this was on our last night so I just shut off the lights and hoped for the best.

We felt honored to be guests here and most definitely plan on coming back when we pass through. The chateau is located not to far from the downtown Reims area for references I would suggest locating the place prior to dark, and to use gps. They have a spa on premise, hot tubs outside, a bar and restaurant as well. The food was artwork with unique flavors and experience. Congratulations to the chef The sommelier was wonderful very knowledgeable and very friendly, we enjoyed also the service from the Team at the bar and at the restaurant on Sunday night. It was pretty central to the Epernay town centre, Avenue du Champagne and the big L.Leclerc if you needed anything. Arrival: Don't let the big wall on the street fool you. Once you turn into the driveway it's beautiful. Bellman: They were helpful and took our luggage to our room. Reception/Front Desk: Very friendly welcome. Lobby: The lobby area is ok with a couple of small sitting areas. Room: We were in room on the first floor. We booked a classic double room which was fine size wise and fit our needs for the stop over. View: We had windows that opened up to the front garden of the hotel. Bed: The queen size bed was very comfortable. Bathroom: The bathroom was fine. The size wasn't small, but it wasn't big. The shower and bathtub was one. Hair dryer: It was one of those which were attached to the walls. I am not a fan of these dryers because they're slow and this one you had to keep your finger on the button to keep it going. It died after awhile. Products: Etro products which were ok. If you want hair conditioner you need to call and ask housekeeping. Closet: The closest was very small and hidden. At first I didn't think we had one until we saw the small sliding door next to the mini bar. Safe: Regular safe in room available. Control Panel: N/A. Just a remote for the TV. Minibar: Very standard with the traditional options. Mirrors: There was one mirror. Housekeeping: Fine. Wifi: The wifi speed was good. Dining outlets we visited: The hotel has a bar, a michelin star restaurant and a patio where you can eat breakfast. 1. The bar was very cozy where we had a glass of champagne. Definitely have a drink there. 2. We didn't eat in the restaurant because we didn't feel like doing a fancy restaurant while on holiday even though the hotel really pushes it. 3. The patio where we had breakfast was disappointing. The service was bad, the food was below average and it was expensive. Breakfast is not included in the room rate and is 22 Euros per person. I asked for soft boiled eggs and they came out in between soft and hard. My husband asked for baked eggs and they came out like frisbees. Spa: Didn't check out the spa. Concierge: They did help us with reservations at Moet et Chandon and offered a few restaurant recommendations. Style: The hotel is very old school. Note: It was raining the two days were were in Champagne and unfortunately didn't get to fully experience their garden which looked amazing. We did a quick walk in between rain showers and there were nice paths, herb garden and open space to walk. Pet friendly: Dogs are welcome at 50 Euros per day - very expensive! They put a bed, water and food bowls in the room which is nice. Dogs are not allowed anywhere in the hotel except for the lobby area and the room. At 50 Euros you would think should be allowed everywhere in the hotel. Would I go back? Probably not. The hotel was fine, but it wasn't our style.

She also managed to call a few places in Epernay to see if we could get in, and one of them agreed. She went beyond the call of duty for us. After checking in, she showed us around to let us know how everything worked. The rooms were great with great air conditioning and large-ish bathrooms. There's a swimming pool available (which we took advantage of one afternoon) as well. It's quite easy to get to in Ay (not that Ay is very big). They're also affiliated with a Champagne house down the street, so they offer a free glass of Champagne if you stop in (we did). There is free coffee, tea and Madelines throughout the day if you want to sit in the library and have some refreshment. There's also covered parking in a garage nearby. It's a great hotel with great service. I imagine we'll stay here again if we come back to the area.
