For the past two years, I've been proud to volunteer as an adult basic literacy instructor. The class is centered around teaching adults basic phonics so they can progress to a level of reading and spelling multi-syllable words. However, LIFT also offers courses at other levels, including pre-GED, ESL (English as a Second Language), and family classes in partnership with DISD. Almost all classes are offered at the Main Campus at the Opportunity Center in south Dallas, but there are several ESL classes all across the Dallas metroplex. LIFT has an amazing mission, and they are more than willing to equip those who want to volunteer with the appropriate training. When I see my students excel or grasp a new concept, I can't help but feel that LIFT has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life thus far. Everyone that works in that school knows my child by name. This is not a daycare. It is a school from 3 months old and on. All the teachers are native Spanish speakers and only communicate in Spanish with the students. In addition to being Spanish immersion, they follow the Project-Based Learning Curriculum even in the nursery school. Your child will not be sitting around all day, their days are full of activities. Each month is a different theme/project and the teachers tailor-fit their lesson plans to match. For example, this month's theme at the nursery and preschool schools is "Deja un Mensaje/Leave a Message." Students are learning all about communication - the traditional and modern ways to stay in touch, the importance of the messages that we send and how communication can connect us to other cultures. The entire school is decorated with mailboxes and letters. I highly recommend checking them out!
