Really enjoyed our visit to Abilene State Park. The park is clean, well maintained, and has a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere. The shaded areas and open spaces make it a great place to unwind and enjoy the outdoors. Traveling in our Class A motorhome with our Jeep in tow, we found it to be a convenient stop. The sites were accessible and setup was easy, making it a comfortable stay for a larger rig. Overall, a great park and one we would definitely visit again. read more

This state park is BEAUTIFUL! We had been waiting to find a hike that was full of trees instead of the usual West Texas dirt. The Abilene State Park really checked all of our boxes. We walked to the bird blind, did Elm Creek Trail and Eagle Trail. We also saw a bit of the Buffalo Wallow. Absolutely wonderful time and doesn't take long at all. read more

*Review for hiking in the camping half of the park, not around the lake* We love state parks, and we love hiking. We didn't realize there were two halves to this park until we were already in the camping half. (So FYI, bypass the turn into the park and keep driving until the road dead ends into the other half of the park, unless you're camping of course) We hiked all the marked paths around the campgrounds, swung at the park for a bit, and checked out the bird blind. We might have been there two hours, max. By the time we left, it was getting too hot to check out the second half. The hiking around the campgrounds was fine, but definitely not something to go out of your way for. We will definitely explore the lake trail next time. read more

Nice campground among the trees with tons of space between each site and plenty of space to hang out. Enjoyed taking the dogs for a walk down the trails and exploring the park with the kids. Definitely a bit out there with some rough roads to get there, but worth it for the nice quiet remote area. Close enough to make a trip into Abilene and explore there as well. read more

Abilene State Park is a wonderful park in Abilene, Texas. It is great for everyone. You can hike the various easy trails, camp in the campsites, stay in a Yurt, stay in a screened shelter, swim, picnic, bike and multiple other activities. Entrance fees are reasonable. I live in California and visiting state parks or National Parks can be expensive. If I remember correctly I believe it was $5 for adults and children under twelve are free. My nieces earned some nice Abilene State Park patches for hiking with us. The facility was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1930's and the park opened in 1934. We had a lot of fun geocaching. read more

Abilene State Park was a pretty good park. The longest hike, the Abilene Dam Road hike is actually not in the park but down the road where you park to fish. I had to leave the park to walk here because the road was closed that connects the park. The trails are very short distances here so probably a great place to go with kids. They do have yurts you can sleep in here so that'd be fun. read more

Always a good time. Weather im going on a hike, walking the dogs, playing in the lake, or riding my horses it's always a good time. 5$ a person to get in- they always give my dogs treats. Some of the trails are quite rocky for horses but if you explore enough you find some real good and fun ones. The water is also horse friendly as most of the bottom is clean- however some spots of red dirt to get quite sinky. One of the only trail spots for horses in the abilene and with shade and water it's a great spot for summer! read more

My father, Lester T. Harris was superintendent of the Abilene State Park from 1941 to 1945. We lived on the park property in a house that was a converted barracks that had been moved from nearby U.S. Army Camp Barkeley. I was 2 years old when we moved from Abilene to the park. Military personnel from Camp Barkeley would come to the park after practice maneuvers for a day of R&R. My father gave them access to the swimming pool free of charge. One time my older brother and I were standing beside the road as the troops came to the park. They would be driving all of there equipment, tanks, jeeps, half-tracks, duce and a half trucks. They would line all of the vehicles up in a field just north of the main pavilion. One time a tank pulled up and stopped where my brother and I were, the top popped open and the soldier ask us if we wanted a ride. I really wanted to ride in that tank, but my brother, being a bit shy and older than I, refused so I didn't get to go. I was so disappointed. My sister who was in high-school and the oldest of us three children, was a licensed life guard at the pool. One day a soldier made a running dive into the pool and hit his head was was knocked unconscious. My sister dove in and another soldier helped her get the soldier out of the pool and she gave him artificial respiration until he came too, saving his life. Years later, she was able to get into contact with this soldier who remembered her. My grandfather (my mother's father) was the caretaker of a boy scout camp, Circle 10 Camp Tonkawa, whose property adjoined the park. My grandmother like to bake and always had a pie and or cake or two in her pie cabinet. Word would get around from one bunch of soldier boys to another that if they went to my grandmother's they could get coffee, fresh milk and desert, so they would ask my mother for directions. She would say, "get Butch (me) and he will show you". So one would put me on his shoulders and I would point the way over to the the Scout Camp. The large water tower is where my father kept his tools, lawn mowers and other things for maintenance. I was always afraid of that place, it really looked spooky to me. The pool was fed from deep wells and fed with an 8 in pipe. The water was really cold. I used to help my father throw chunks of chlorine disinfectant into the pool to keep the water safe. We left the park when my father took the assignment of superintendent of Possum Kingdom State Park near Breckenridge, Texas. I was able to visit the park a few years ago and spoke at length with one of the park rangers about how the park was back then. Brought back a lot of fond memories. William H. It's like an oasis in Abilene. For all of the people that like to stay active in an outdoorsy kind of way this is a great option. We all know that Abilene is full of flat land and sunburnt trees. Driving out to the state park is a great change of scenery. Options here include swimming in a pretty large pool, camping, biking, picnics, and hiking. I'm sure there is more that I don't even know about. My fam and I spent the day out here and saw exotic wildlife like baby armadillos and deer (haha. Exotic for me) I am looking forward to camp in a yurt or cabin and bike some of the trails. Yay! I found something different to do in Abilene! read more

Not a bad park for our Abilene but the people that work there have no clue. We frequent llano state park so we thought we might as well get an annual membership at this visit. The lady at Abilene state park said they didn't sell those. I double checked when we left and just like I thought...she's wrong. She also failed to tell us there is an entry code required for Lake Abilene. We had to ask another family going in how to get in. read more
