I lived around the corner from this joint for years and never plucked up the gumption to set foot in the place. It may've been the Maitre d' in the lobby or the flash of slot machines visible from the road, but the place kinda creeped me out and intrigued me in equal measures.
A couple of years later, a friend's band had some kind of release party upstairs in the ballroom, so finally I got my chance to explore. There's all the pomp and grandeur of the 1920s inside - ornately ballustraded curved staircases, statues, outrageous carpet patterns - and I almost felt a little voyeuristic even being in there.
Needless to say, the whole band thing was a bit strange and didn't seem to fit with the surrounds. Plus the room only half filled out (it is enormous), so there was this clanging of sounds coupled with the clanging of cultures. I was still pretty happy to have gotten a sneak peak at the interior of this intriguing beast. And I hear they do cheap meals. read more
