Short and sweet. Abu Omar is just okay. The evening I visited the truck, they seemed to be out of half their menu. The menu which has no prices and isn't complete. :/ Also there was only one person working who took large breaks from making food to take orders... slowly even though other people were waiting for their food. Chicken shwarma had a bit of odd texture... likely being overcooked at a low temperature. Also they use a grilled tortilla style bread rather than a pita which was unexpected and not preferred. So here is the deal. I like their food. I'm pretty sure they have trucks in houston also and I eat at the one in Katy when I'm in town. The food here is good to, at least the couple of times I've had it, and service at the window is good. The issue I had, is I was trying to order conveniently through what I guess is Grub Hub (whatever service you order through yelp.) and something screwed up and they never got the order, then they messed up the order because they didn't have a physical ticket or write it down after I showed it to them. So now, what should have taken a half hour tops round trip is up to an hour and a half now. I haven't been offered anything for the inconvenience and of course grub hub is screwed up and has no one manning their phones. Eat here, never use grub hub ever. Update: just got home and they also messed up the order. Their menu on yelp/grubhub and favor say that a side order of falafel is 2 patties. The food cart itself was clean, and the area around it was delightful and clean as well. The gentleman working there greeted us with a warm smile and went out of his way to get us what we wanted. Went because dons was closed and ordered the $5 chicken and gyro rice. I don't understand why you would ever go here instead of Halal Bros. For $8 there you get twice as much rice and meats, and it comes with a nice serving of veggies. The quality and flavor of the meats there is also exponentially better and enough for two meals. I went to this food truck for the first time not knowing what to expect and I was so surprised by how good their food was and how nice the young man running the kitchen was, I had to write about it. I ordered their gyro and fries. He was very polite and was patient with me while I decided what to order. Telling him this was my first time, he loaded up my gyro with so much meat and other ingredients, I was blown away. You just don't get this nowadays. Came here about a month ago and tried the Italian shawarma! Omg! Hands down the best thing I eaten in all of Austin and that's saying a lot. Yes Halal brothers is down the street, but they do not make this unique menu item and it is the equivalent of an middle eastern hamburger. The texture, meat, and cheese with the pickles and garlic sauce just bring it together into deliciousness. We got the chicken and the beef to try and the chicken definitely had the better flavor overall. It does come with some fries on the bottom, if you can make it through the large portion size to the fries they are good. I have been craving it again since I ate it, it's just that amazing! I came here to pick up an Ubereats order twice tonight. The first time the employee was really rude to me, the food wasn't ready and I waited a while for them to finish it. They told me that they were out of an item but didn't contact the customer to let them know, so the vegetarian item the customer ordered, they gave them meat instead. The next time I came to pick up the a different delivery, one employee was too busy talking with his friend to help out the other. I waited again, for some time while one guy tried to put the food together. The other employee was smoking weed in the car next to the food truck. It took forever for one item and a water bottle. A few other potential customers walked up to order, waited a while before they were greeted and told it would be a moment, then they walked away. I was only picking up for Ubereats, but I wouldn't want to be a customer here at all. Not only was the customer service trash to me, but also to others who tried to order. If you want a healthy option that's open late, come and try their shawarma salad! It's kick-ass! Fresh green mix, tomatoes, olives, chickpeas, white sauce, and a generous portion of chicken/beef. DONT forget to ask for red sauce though. It needs it. The Italian shawarma sandwich is also pretty good, albeit odd. They're definitely one of West Campus' more underrated food trucks. read more
