Actually, I had a reservation at another restaurant for dinner at late hour, so I was just looking for a place to grab a quick appetizer coz I was so hungry. On the way, we saw this beautiful taco spot and the ambiance and outdoor decor immediately caught my attention. Juliana at the stand outside was incredibly welcoming and helpful. She recommended the mahi mahi tacos, and I absolutely loved them. They were incredibly delicious and the sauce was outstanding. The rice and beans on the side were also amazing. I don't often bother to review bad places, but Abuela's is exceptional, providing the worst food I had on this trip. Maybe the worst food I've had this year. In fact, when you factor in the price (see my photo of the receipt) . . . urgh - yes, the worst meal this year. Congratulations on that accomplishment, Abuela's Tacos Latin Restaurant Miami Beach; you struck me as flat-out terrible. We came here because it was near our hotel and we needed to call it an early night. We almost visited the Mexican place next door, but we'd had a referral from a couple who'd enjoyed the margaritas at Abuela's so . . . my suffering begins. 7-11-quality nachos at ludicrous pricing, but at least I had Immodium AD for the air travel the next day. Ugh. I don't want to speculate on the meat in the terrible tacos my wife ordered. We eat a lot of Mexican from various areas, but every bit of this was just wrong, Wrong, WRONG! Never went inside; sat streetside and watched the bizarre parade of Collins Avenue happen. At least there were pretty hotels to look at, although the tables were crowded pretty closely together. We arrived early for a 7pm reservation and were seated right away. The restaurant actually got busier as the night went on and had a good crowd for a Monday night. We were given chips and salsa before we ordered. Chips were crisp, flavorful and light. I tried the salsa verde and appreciated its flavor and the slight kick of heat that it offered! I had veggie tacos for my entree. Soft tortillas filled with sautéed mushrooms, onions, peppers and shaved Brussels sprouts combined to make a flavorful and filling meal. Pros: amazing service! I went for a birthday party and they really gave us a great and comfortable experience. I had the vegetable fajitas, and they were a little too salty for my taste but yummy. The servings were huge, so it served me as three meals. The rest of our party of about 25 really enjoyed their food and drinks. Cons: it's very hot in there, the door stays open, and they have fans, but it's a little rough during Miami summers. As much as I hate writing negative reviews, I have to share my experience here. The interior was very authentic and inviting, although I was seated near the bathroom, which had a terrible smell. Aside from that, the chips and salsa were tasty! My partner Rob and I ordered the fish tacos, and they arrived 40 minutes after we had finished our starter--and they were cold. I was already annoyed, but I decided to give them a try. Unfortunately, the tortilla was stale and very dry. The tacos were soggy overall, and the fish tasted like plastic. I rarely have such a strongly negative opinion about restaurants, especially in Miami, but this was truly a horrible experience. I cannot make this up! We reported the issue to our server, who took the food back, and we never heard from her again. I'm sorry, but this was truly a terrible experience, and I do not recommend ordering the fish tacos. I never leave reviews. But this was so bad I feel obligated to say something. We ordered shrimp quesadillas, which should be hard to mess up. Instead, when we cut into the melted cheese, we were met with shrimp that very clearly had not been properly cleaned. The dark digestive veins were fully visible through the cheese. At this price point, I genuinely expected basic prep standards. Seeing that instantly killed my appetite. The texture didn't help either. Every bite felt off. It was one of those meals where you keep trying to convince yourself it's fine, but your brain is screaming otherwise. For what we paid, this was beyond disappointing. We've been rating the food we've tried on this trip, and this landed dead last. And that's saying something. If you're charging premium prices, the food should reflect that. I was so disappointed in my recent visit to Abuela's Tacos. Waitress was beyond apathetic and rude. Everyone's appetizers came out and on time - but not mine. I called my waitress's attention to it. But she still didn't bring anything to the table for me! I ordered when everyone else did, so I just couldn't understand why I was sitting there still hungry. When dinner was served, I still didn't receive my order. The waitress ignored me. She purposely did not make eye contact. She also didn't offer a bowl of chips, a roll or anything to stem my hunger. Finally, both my appetizer and dinner were served at the same time. Everyone was finished eating by that time and wanted to leave. So I only had enough time to pick at my appetizer and never touched my dinner. I was further disappointed when I paid the check. There was already a 20% tip added for the waitress. No wonder why she didn't care if I was enjoying myself or not. In retrospect, I left Abuela's Tacos hungry, embarrassed in front of my guests and horribly upset about being ignored. I always love authentic tacos and this place delivered. It was right across the street from our AirBnb so we thought we'd try it. It was a good choice. The food was very good. Tasted fairly close to authentic. We started with the steak nachos. They were delicious! They had cheese, jalapeños, steak, sour cream, and guacamole. They were loaded and not lacking in the toppings department. There was plenty for 4 of us to share. My girlfriend and I split the birria tacos and they were worth every penny. The flavor of the birria itself was top notch and the sauce to dip in was the real treat. There were 3 tacos, rice and beans on the plate. Our table also ordered Al pastor tacos and fish tacos. They said that they were very flavorful. The service was great. Our waiter got us drinks quickly and food out nearly as fast. He stopped by many times to check on us and fill waters. He made for an awesome overall experience. The ambiance transports you to a Hispanic household. It felt very homey inside and had decorations all over the place. We had an exquisite lunch at abuela's tacos! The restaurant is decorated in lively colors and the inside is super cute and aesthetic period. To start, I had the tamaringo margarita, which was spicy and strong loved this drink period. My friend had the watermelon mojito and love that as well. For appetizers, we had the elote, tuna tostada and and the chicken flautas. My favorite was the tostadas, which is a must order, and the chicken flautas us as well. For the main course we had the mixed fajitas, which came out steaming and were delicious, and we also had the Rosa tacos that was super. Yummy both came with a side of black beans and rice. If you order the chicken flautas, please be aware that it also has guacamole, so aside of guac, it is not necessary. For dessert we had a tres leches cake that was perfectly sweet and good enough to share. Finished off the meal with a cafecito. This place is a gem in south beach. Not only is the food and drinks so amazing, but the staff and service here is impeccable. Antonio and Cotti both have hearts of gold and literally made it feel like we were having dinner at home with our family. We ordered the Molcajete and it is basically fajitas on steroids! So flavorful and the best combination of everything you could want. It's a lava rock bowl filled with bell peppers and onions, sautéed in an amazing sauce. It also comes with every protein you want. (steak, shrimp, chicken and chorizo) I love chorizo and this is one the best chorizos, it was the perfect amount of juicy and spicy. We also got the kiwi and pineapple margaritas.
