Stayed here recently for 2 nights in Stow. We had 3 adults so we got 2 rooms - rooms 1 and 3…read more Number 9 only has 3 rooms, so it is a cozy place but with everything you would want. We were tended to by James quite diligently, and he cooked a great breakfast for us all. All 3 rooms overlook the main street of Stow, but never fear - with the double paned windows it is absolutely quiet. The beds were super comfortable and everything was clean and tidy. Room 1 is a good size, with a shower, while Room 3 is the attic room, has a tub bath, and does require more of a hike up some steep stairs. Room 3 has sloped ceilings, and is a bit more of a squeeze, but it is priced accordingly to what you get. Perhaps my only complaint with the rooms were the towels which are a bit on their last legs and should be replaced. Breakfast is great, and James offers everything that you could possibly want. There is a living room, which we didn't take advantage of, but also was overseen by the family dog, Snoop Doggy Dog (yes that's his real name), who presides over a pillow in the bay window and tends to bark at....everyone. The other complaint I'd have was that WiFi had a tendency to go in and out, and was definitely weaker in Room 3. Otherwise, it is a great location very centrally located and surrounded by a ton of restaurants. They do not have a parking lot of any sort, but James had staked out a spot right in front with his car for us - just be sure to arrange it with him ahead of time so that you know. Otherwise, it's a free-for-all parallel parking situation on both sides of the road!

Getting to the room, while at the top of the house and a bit of a way to get too, was charming in how you had so many twists and turns to get to. All the way passing some great prints that intrigued and amused. The room itself, was a little small, but very charming. It had a spacious wardrobe and had everything else you may need. There was a nice bathroom, again decorated very aptly. Breakfast was a highlight, I had the scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, which was divine. The coffee was good too. Very nice hotel that I would love to stay in again.

We were cruising through the Cotswolds on our way from London to southwest England, and decided to spend the night here, as it was recommended in one of our travel guidebooks. We were fortunate that they had a room available (no reservation, but it is the off-season) at a decent rate (£165, including breakfast and a 3-course dinner). The place is quaint and charming . . actually that description could be applied to the town and the Cotswold area in general. Our room was in what appeared to be a newer annex, and wasn't top of the line by any means . . the radiator wouldn't shut off, the TV was miniscule, the tub/shower was a hazard to access, etc. The food, however, was the bomb, even though no one in the English countryside appears to have any clue about how to make a martini. Free wifi was a plus as well. Our room had a nice little garden patio, although the temps were much too cold to use it. The staff was great, and we had a nice experience overall.

The staff were very pleasant (except for one guy named Conrad who seemed to have a bit of a tude). Our room was huge and comfy and even the bathroom was huge! We actually had room to spread out and unpack our stuff! We did experience some strange stuff (bed moving, strange whispers in the night). One of the employees was kind enough to show us the two "bad" rooms (these are the rooms where people would leave in the middle of the night because of ghostly activity), and the underground tunnels. Be sure and check out the witch mark on the huge fireplace in the 947 restaurant. Breakfast is served in this restaurant, and is included. I thought it would be your typical breads and cereals (which is was), but then you can order off a menu as well. Stuff like pancakes (which are really crepes) and eggs. We also ate dinner in another restaurant (under our room, actually), called the Eagle and Child Pub, and it was good. They had plenty of stuff for vegetarians, like cheese souffles. Other than Conrad, this place was just awesome.

And it was the perfect ending, such a cute town, with the little rivers running through the city. No loud pubs, or stuffy restaurants, just down home charm! It was rainy when we were here but that was ok, it added to the english charm. I believe there are two ladies that run this B&B, there are a lot of stuffed animals, but if you can get over that, its PERFECT! Great location, Great Breakfast! This is my most favorite place of the cotswolds! Oh it was a little hard to find, as it said it was rainy...but drive by where you think it is a couple of times, like they describe on the website, and you will find it!

Chastleton House is a wonderfully preserved example of an early 17th Century House, with a lively…read morehistory, and attractive gardens. The house was built for Walter Jones, a wealthy lawyer whose family were originally Welsh wool merchants. He purchased the estate in 1602, and replaced the original house with one in the early Renaissance style. It is built around a small internal courtyard, and is unusual in being built close to a village, which provided some of the services (such as a laundry and bakehouse) that would have been integral to a larger estate mansion. Chastleton remained in the same family for 400 years, and was acquired by the National Trust only in 1991. The family chose the Royalist side in the English Civil War, which resulted in them losing much of their fortune. They nearly also lost the family line, when Arthur, the grandson of Walter, fled to his home after the Battle of Worcester in 1651. Hiding in the house, his wife enabled his escape by putting laudanum in the beer of the pursuing Parliamentary troops. But the financial impact of the war meant that the family was relatively impoverished; this however delivered the glory of the house; it survived the next 350 years relatively unmodernised, with much of the original furniture, paintings and tapestries in place, with an air of slow decay. After acquiring the house, the National Trust spent nearly a decade stabilising it, but thankfully conserved it in its "dusty" state. The rooms include a Great Hall with a classic Jacobean screen, the walls lined with the family portraits; a wonderfully panelled dining room; a Great Chamber (effectively a drawing room) and Long Gallery, and several large but homely bedrooms. The main rooms all have wonderful early Jacobean plastered ceilings, some clearly installed by workers who also installed ceilings in some of the nearby Oxford colleges. The kitchen and cellars are also intact - the latter including a huge (and incredibly heavy) 75ft high ladder, used to clear the gutters. The car park is a 250m walk along a gravel path down to the house. There is a second-hand bookshop, but no cafe; in the summer, drinks and cakes are served in the charming adjacent mediaeval church, supporting other local churches and charities.

It has thus been neither restored or updated and contains numerous belongings from the family's life and history, as well as the changes which the family made during their life here. This makes it both grand and fascinating for being able to see how a family, once wealthy and important but increasingly impovershed, lived in such a grand place. Tea and cake are at times provided in the chapel on the grounds.
