Rarely can you find someone to help you when needed, and there is almost always only one cashier and a huge line. It's ridiculous. They need more staff. Also, it would be nice if stuff was put where it goes. It's not organized well. I avoid this location as much as possible. read more

I purchased a firearm and was advised that background checks were taking longer than usual. This is fine and I understand it is a busy time of year. I was told I would get a call once they got it in. 2 days go by, and no call. I called and I'm told I'm so sorry, mam, we will call you tomorrow. Welp, there is still no call, and I've called the store almost 40 times today, and not one person answered. Can't wait to go stand there for 45 minutes after work while people look like a deer in headlights and scrambling. Needless to say, I'll be asking for a refund and taking my business elsewhere. Went to Abilene for socks & jeans for husband. I was immediately struck by the mess the minute I walked through the door. The entires store looked like an explosion. just about every display looked like someone just dumped a box of merchandise & walked away. Nothing folded, lots of items of clothing piled on floor. Been coming for years. Only lately has it been a let down on ammo but that can be expected with covid. Prices are pretty good and now they give a military discount. Shoe selection is large, as well as active clothing. Hunting and fishing has many options and supplies. I come every year to get my sportsman's license but have yet to use it except for fishing. My husband had been eyeing a fire pit for quite some time now. He always said "Academy has it" and I never knew what Academy was until we came here. I should have known it was a store from this home town! SERVICE - The fire pit he was looking at was sold out online but he saw that they had it in stock at the store. My husband called the store and asked if they had it and the person he spoke with said yes. My husband also asked if they could send it to California if we came to buy it and the person said yes! We drove to the store and spoke with someone at customer service. They had the camping person pull the product that was on hold for us and it was the wrong fire pit. We spoke to one of the team leads and she gave us a handout listing prices for delivery. However, the handout was just delivery for Abilene. We told her that we were looking for delivery to California and she said they could not ship to California. So overall, we felt like we were misled. We took the time to go there and they could not follow through with what was promised on the phone. Very disappointed. read more

I don't like to give negative reviews, but the Academy sports In Abilene TX is got to be the worst experience in Abilene. It is always understaffed. It doesn't matter what time you go in, plan on 20 minutes waiting in line at the check out counter. I don't blame the staff too much, because I believe it is a management issue, although the staff is sometimes apathetic (probably because they're morale is so low from being chronically understaffed). Unfortunately, there's no good alternative in Abilene. Dick's Sporting Goods please come to Abilene. You'd put this place out of business very quickly. read more

Ok, aside from ammo, this store has everything from fitness to sports to hunting and fishing and let's not forget Team Sports. Wife and daughter just picked up bathing suits for the summer. I always check out the cooking section, there is always something to add to the cookout selection at home. I did get a oil-less turkey fryer for Christmas. It is terrific! Love this place. This is absolutely absurd. Academy is knowingly allowing the local gun shops to bulk buy all the high demand calibers of ammunition before they even hits the shelves. The local gun shops like B&B Gun and Pawn, have people that wait in the store and buy all the high demand calibers of ammunition right off the palate before it even gets stocked, and then take it to their stores and double and triple the price. The local gun shops are intentionally creating market scarcity so they can rip people off. What they are doing is no different then scalping. The Academy employees know who these people are and continue to allow them to do it. The bottom line is that even though what these stores are doing is not technically illegal, it is most definitely unethical, both morally and socially. Gun stores have a license to buy ammo wholesale and they should be getting their supply straight from the factory, not from a local retail store. Academy is a retail store and should not be knowingly participating in aiding another retailer to create market scarcity in order to artificially drive prices up. It shows that Academy could care less out it's real retail customers. If Academy truly cared about it's retail customer base they would restrict the sale of scarce and high demand calibers to retail customers alone (not other retailers) and limit the quantity each retail customer can buy, so that other retail customers might actually have a chance to buy some ammo too. read more

I don't begrudge the hunters their toys, but stocking a few swimming goggles wouldn't be so challenging and doesn't take up much space. Love shopping for shoes at Academy. I love the fact that no employee is needed to interact with to get me my shoes (one of the reasons I avoid going to other athletic shoe stores). I can try on different shoes, colors, sizes without having someone hovering over me - I always feel a pressure to decide so quickly in these situations. On my most recent visit to academy, I wanted to look at a pair of $100 Nike free runs...My plan was to just try on the size and color and then order them online from a different site where I would earn points...I literally stopped and thought to myself as I was trying the shoes on that it was the most pleasant and peaceful shoe shopping experience and decided to just buy them then and there at Academy instead. read more

Good for ammo but do no purchase a firearm here store policy is pass or fail only on back ground checks. If you get delayed good luck because they will gladly accept payment before the merchandise is given and even though the law is to wait 3 days without a response they won't sell even though they can legally. I bought a gun online and tried to pick up December 26th, got delayed so I was told by the "manager" at the time come back after 3 days and then came back to pick up after this waiting period and got told to wait 30 days after filling 4473 form and called many times to ask about status of the check and was told to come back on 26th of January. I come back January 26th and try to do another form 4473 and again delayed. I mentioned on the day of the 2nd background check that I'd getting my LTC so the person this time says come back when you get the LTC or this 2nd background check comes back as a proceed with sale. So finally Feb. 16th brand new LTC in hand and get told that since there is still a pending background check I have to wait until this one expires on the 26th of February. I may buy ammo but that's it and I will never buy a firearm from a store that enacts lousy policies like this, not to mention that none of this is stated on the receipt or during the purchase on the website. I recommend going to Wild Bills or The Shootin' Shop with better prices but if you're going to buy from here get an LTC first and don't pay in advance. Otherwise, don't expect to even get a firearm at all because they may as well just say what's on the website and in the store is just decoration. read more

I went to Academy yesterday, like in Walmart or Ross Dress for Less, I heard the PA blast "Fishing Section". In 10 seconds, I got two staff members running in no time at my aisle as I checked out items on the shelf. I would give them no stars if I could. I ordered the PT 111 deal with the free Rough Rider 2 1/2 weeks ago. On the day I was supposed to come pick it up I called ahead to make sure it was there. The sales associate confirmed my order was there. When I went in to pick it up I was told that my reservation never went through and my only solution was to come stand in line on black Friday for the chance to get it. So because they failed to enter my reservation correctly in their system I was SOL. I'll never be coming back to this store. read more

Great clean and organized store. Was never asked if I needed any help but that's ok, I wasn't looking for anything specific! Ended up getting a pair of soffe shorts for $8 and a nice shirt for less than $3 on clearance. Can't beat that! Just visited this store and it's brand new location. I was more than disappointed. It is beautiful and very spacious. However, the new location has not helped customer service at all. First of all, they were out of stock on some fishing supplies that they should have on hand in a brand new, newly stocked store. What was most disappointing, however, was waiting in line to check out. They had two registers open. The lines at both registers were at least nine people deep. Eventually, they called for back up cashiers. Nobody came. There were multiple employees standing around near the customer service desk, but nobody jumped on a register to help. This is typical of Academy. I just really hoped that in a brand new facility, they would have more pride in their customer service. I was wrong. read more

And if you ask the manager for assistance by bringing another customer service person he will call for an additional cashier.
