When I heard I could learn how to play golf with a ball, a club, and an hour, it felt too good to be true. A recent Yelp event introduced me to Canada Park Golf (CPG). I had a great time. I got a 20% coupon for my next visit and used it. I first got here five minutes before we were to start playing at 6 pm. Parking was at a premium. I found a parking spot that was more dirt than pavement. Luckily, it was dry dirt. I had no problem backing into the spot and heading over to the registration area, which is a blue trailer. If you are prone to being bitten by mosquitoes, I recommend using NATPAT patches. I have been outdoors with a lot of leafy trees and grass at least four times within a month, including at CPG. No mosquito bites. They are amazing! I also recommend bringing a water bottle to stay hydrated. There are 18 holes. I feel that I needed more than an hour to finish the course. With a pass, you can stay here as long as you need. Jason, the owner, was nice when we met him at the Yelp event. His making sure that we we were good extended to his staffers, who were kind and helpful. We got instructions on how to hold the club. I am right-handed and got the proper club. I had to grip the club with my left hand and then grip my right hand below it. We visited the trailer to get our golf clubs and balls. The female staffer asked for ID for incidentals. We all didn't have our ID on us. Oops! She trusted us. I gave her my name. We were good. Our group got hole 1 to start. We couldn't see the flag for hole 1 until a staffer showed us that it was around the bend. We got a bend in our first par 4 hole. It was a lot of fun. My swing got better towards the end of the hour... haha! The downside was that our groups of four started at different holes. Our group didn't want to hit anyone in front of us, so we waited till the coast was clear before we played. It meant that we barely got through the first nine holes. We all didn't mind. We wanted to make sure that we captured these fun moments and took photos. I talked to a female staffer about each hole. It's an eight-inch stainless steel hole that was imported for Korea. The wider hole allows the ball to drop a lot easier. I was grateful for the 20% coupon. It was so much fun. I recommend going when there's a light breeze and it isn't scorching hot outside. I bombarded them with questions over email, they didn't leave a single one unanswered, they were quick to respond and very accommodating. The patience in answering multiple emails, questions and follow up questions is how I knew my experience here would be good. The good - The alcoholic drink options were okay, the variety wasn't large but the cocktails and mocktails were good. Food was good too. The karaoke was a bit confusing to navigate at first but we got the hang of it. There's something for everyone here and coming in a large group definitely made it worth it.

I believe one of the City's MPP's came up with the idea to repurpose the Lakeview Golf Course. Whomever did, it was a great idea! The course is less than 5 minutes south of Dixie Mall and the entrance is sorta hidden. If you're going south on Dixie, the driveway is on the right/west side. So keep your eyes peeled! There is parking on-site and the trail is marked. Don't just follow the paved paths because most of them end abruptly. Like most golf courses, they're open fields with some rolling hills. So it can get quite windy! Dress accordingly, including a hat/gloves. Trail is dog-friendly, but dogs must be leased...and of course, you hafta pick-up after your dog. Trail is 2km and without any snow and if you're a fast walker, it took about 30 minutes to complete. Trail is open from 10-4pm, mainly because it gets dark early now! It was fairly dead when I went, so no need to worry about social distancing.

But I still highly recommend playing here for the great layout, convenience and fun that you get every time you play at Lakeview.

They also have clubs for rental as well. Jumbo bucket with 100 balls come out to around $30 and reg bucket with 60 balls is around $22 plus tax. Pay for the buckets at the clubhouse before going to the range. With the outdoor stalls they have both real grass or fake turf. The fake turf provides the usual left handed or right handed grass panels with a rubber tee. The rubber tee is a bit high as I know some other places usually have a taller and a shorter rubber tee for interchanging. Otherwise the spots are pretty good (no shade fyi) and the ball dispensing machine is quick and fast.

It did start raining quite heavily while we were there, so if you're worried about the weather, it's important to know that there is no coverage for the outdoor section!

There are LOTS of mature trees, creeks, and ponds, waiting to swallow your ball. Changes in elevation make club selection crucial. Hitting your approach shot past the hole could make your next shot very tricky. Don't let the Par 71, 6,026 yards fool you. All of these factors can bite you before you know it. On this occasion, I was co-hosting a small golf tournament (28 players), with dinner following in the restaurant. The weather was near-perfect, with just a little cloud cover to prevent us from getting burned. Despite a minor hiccup with registration at the beginning, the staff were very friendly and helpful. We got everything sorted out to everybody's satisfaction. Our starter, Michael, was great at pacing us off the first tee and giving everybody, especially first-timers, tips on where they should be aiming. Marshals checked with us several times during the round. After seeing the scores at the end of the round, it appears that not many people took Michael's advice. The scores were abnormally high, even from the players that have been here before. After golf, we had a nice BBQ dinner on the patio overlooking the 18th green. The menu included crudite, salads, burgers, sausages, and desserts. There was more than enough food for everybody and it tasted pretty good. I had arrived early, before the tournament, to have breakfast with my co-host and another friend. The breakfast portions are quite generous and the meals were prepared well. I'll be back (even if it's just to find all the balls I left out there)...
