I can't believe nobody's Yelped Acme yet! I've been getting my hair done here for several years and I always leave feeling gorgeous. Melissa Stripling, who owns the salon, always does my hair. Acme is a cool little salon tucked away in a small industrial complex just a couple minutes from John Wayne Airport. (Previously, the salon was located on Irvine Avenue in Costa Mesa.) In addition to cuts, color and all that stuff, they also offer skin care services. Not sure what all that encompasses since I've only had my hair done here, so I'd suggest calling for details. They also sell the usual range of hair products and even have some really cute clothing, jewelry, hair accessories and other stuff. I recommend leaving time to browse before or after your appointment. I go to Melissa for regular haircuts, plus color and highlights too, and the prices are pretty reasonable. Melissa and her staff also do hair for weddings. Since I was planning my own wedding this year, I went to Melissa for a consultation or two in the months leading up to the big day. We had a lot of fun playing around with different looks and decided on a style I really loved. The morning of the wedding, Melissa came to the hotel where I was staying to do my hair, along with the hair of four other members of the wedding party. She even fit in a quick style for my short-haired maid of honor, who originally wasn't planning to have hers done. Everyone was happy with how their hair turned out, especially me! My makeup artist was impressed with Melissa's work too. In fact, the two of them even exchanged cards so they could team up in the future. Of course, you can choose to have your bridal party styled on-site at the salon, but they'll also come to your location for a small travel fee, which I highly recommend. If you get married on a Sunday like I did though, the travel fee applies either way since they're closed on Sundays. Melissa, the owner is mean-spirited. I asked Melissa once more retouch my hairline during the color process, she went over my light blonde hair three times making it hair dark brown. When I foolishly went back to her a month later and I told her I didn't like what she did, she smiled and never offered to compensate me or rehighlight me, bringing my hair color to where it was, which I thought was unbelievable! Before discovering ACME, I was content to: 1. Wait 6 months - 1 year to visit my parents back east and get my hair cut there, because I was too afraid of repeating [many years of] bad experiences by trying some place new. 2. Dye my hair every 6 months - 1 year because I'm lazy. Finally, enough was enough. My split ends had split ends and I couldn't deal with the effort needed to dye my long hair. In a spur-of-the-moment decision, I set up an appointment online with Katie, who I am now convinced is a magician. I am awful at articulating what I want and she somehow created what I was looking for, perfectly. I'm just going back for trims now, but my first visit, I decided to be dramatic and chop over a foot of my hair off on a whim. This can be pretty scary on its own - even more so if you're going somewhere you've never been before. I was so happy with my haircut, I didn't miss my long hair at all. I got so many compliments on both the cut and the color. Katie knew exactly which colors (and how much of each) to mix to get the exact natural-looking red color I wanted. I've never had that happen before. The previous times I've had my hair dyed at a salon, the color never came out quite like I wanted (once, I had to get my hair dyed twice in the same day because the first color never showed up on my hair), and it always faded very quickly to an ugly orange color...which is why I stuck to box colors and endured fire truck red hair until it eventually faded into a natural-looking auburn. But, Katie's concoction was perfect and it lasted!!! It's been two months since my last appointment and, even though my roots need to be touched up, the dyed part has still retained its red and looks natural. The salon has a lot of options, so I recommend calling if you're not sure which option to choose. My first visit, I chose the wrong one - the actual option for the cut and color I needed had a longer timeframe than the one I chose. But Katie was really nice and understanding about it and stayed longer to ensure everything was perfect. I highly recommend ACME!! read more

I came to Acme with my manicurist, Nancy, 4 years ago. At the time I was with child, and wasn't doing anything hair related. I liked the space, liked the vibe, and decided that when I was ready to cut my hair, I'd make an appointment with Katie. During that time, I had a couple of blowouts with her for parties. When I finally decided to cut my hair, I made the appointment and was not disappointed! Katie took my hair from not being touched in 3 years, to looking healthy and happy, and appropriate for a mom of a preschooler without being "mom hair". When I decided to banish the greys popping through, I said "a chocolaty brown" and was blown away with the tones and the highlights. Now that spring is around the corner, and the chocolate has faded to a nice copper we went with that blending. I totally trust Katie with my hair! I came here very last minute to get my hair done for a wedding. And since I don't live in Irvine anymore, I was scrambling to find a stylist. I love the online booking option because I was able to make the appointment literally a few hours before! However, my experience wasn't stellar. My hair is currently hip-length and dyed blue and purple. With these fun colors, I'm supposed to wash my hair with cool water and with sulfate-free shampoo to keep the colors from washing out quickly. I feel that a stylist should know that and/or ask what water temperature I prefer. But she washed my hair in warm water with shampoo that has sulfates in it without even asking me, and sadly, the colors in my hair look a bit more faded than they did when I walked in. I also wish she told me the things she was using in my hair. Overall, more communication would have been great, especially since my hair is colored. Very nice and clean salon with friendly staff, though, so that was great! Shout out to the stylist who did my hair for being such a trooper in dealing with my long and thick hair! read more
