Talk about lucking out with a great hotel!
While I am an expert at finding quality yet affordable hotels in the states, my skills are not quite as sharp when looking abroad. And when searching in an unfamiliar town over what is surely the busiest, most tourist filled weekend of the year? I didn't have high hopes. But the Addagio definitely exceeded my expectations.
First of all, the location is FANTASTIC. It's only a few paces away from the main tram station, so getting anywhere in the city is a breeze. This includes the train station, which is about a 5 minute trip. Plus you are right off fantastic shopping, both local flavor and internationally renowned luxury brands. Add in gorgeous squares, architecture that is as charming as it is old, and more restaurants than you could eat at in a month, and this location has literally everything for somebody touring Strasbourg.
As for the hotel itself, they treat the rooms more like apartments. We went with the studio, and were there for 5 nights. It was almost perfect. Granted, we had a corner room, so that may have helped, but two entire walls of windows (that actually open, unlike in American hotels) made the place seems so airy and bright. Views of the street were excellent people watching, but keep in mind that those windows across the street are people's apartments, so close the blinds, lovebirds! With a large TV, small kitchen area (complete with stove and all the pots/pans you would need), ample closet space, and a modern bathroom, it was probably larger than some of the apartments in town. I found myself thinking many times that I could live there with only the most minor of lifestyle adjustments. Additionally, the place was impeccably clean. The only bummer was that I found the shower to be pretty small. the sink was comically oversized, so I wish they would have just put in normal-person sized sinks and showers.
The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. They are multilingual, which is good since my French doesn't extend much past "Parlez-vous anglais?" and counting to 3. They had great recommendations for restaurants to try, and transport options for when we needed to get to the airport.
They serve a breakfast, but why would you eat at a hotel when you're in FRANCE! Amazing bistros everywhere. They also have free wifi. It moves at about the speed at which you would expect free wifi to move, but still it's free!
I would stay here again in a heartbeat. And I would gladly recommend it to anybody else. read more
