It would be like if you combined the Westin with a dude ranch with a Michelin restaurant. My group was there in January, so as you can see from the pictures, it was very dry/ brown, but im sure in the spring/summer it is gorgeous and green. The rooms are well appointed; the sunsets gorgeous. They have a lovely community porch/lookout area where you can sit wine or coffee and just soak in the scenery. They also have a community fridge for guests to utilize. There is a Nespresso in every room, as well as filtered water. They also have some very sweet farm animals (donkeys, horse, dog) that you can play with and pet. My only complaint about the rooms is that the showers have low water pressure. I assume this is b/c they are on different infrastructure than an "in the city" hotel. Not a big deal to most people, but i have long thick hair and so like strong water pressure to wash my hair quickly. As for the restaurant, it reminds me of a friendlier, more texas version of French Laundry (the famous restaurant in the Napa Valley area). There is a fixed menu of 5 courses, all of which were very tasty!! I would have liked bigger portions, but the quality was great. I greatly enjoyed the food, the other guests, and the nice but not invasive wait staff. The staff largely leaves you alone, so make sure to expect that when you stay here. They are not constantly bugging you or checking up on you. If you are looking for a lovely country getaway, do make the trip out to Coleman, TX, and spend a night or two at Ranch Loma!

Robert led us to our gorgeous king room where the most delicious yuzu margaritas, prepared by Laurie were waiting for us. We enjoyed relaxing with our drinks before dinner, taking in the beautiful landscape and visiting with the other guests. There are several very comfortable (and stylish) outdoor seating areas. Really, everything at Rancho Loma is comfortable (and stylish). Dinner was 5-courses of PERFECTION. I brought wine and my hubby brought a couple of bottles of beer which were kept cool until he was ready for them. Hubby was super impressed with the little pilsner glass with orange zest that Robert brought to the table for his beer. When I asked for bread, the waitress brought 2 freshly warmed slices drizzled with olive oil. (It's all about the little touches, you know.) I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite course, so I'll say it was a toss-up between the Lasagna Bolognese and the Akaushi strip steak. This was the first steak I've had in 8 months and boy was it worth it!! For breakfast, Laurie whipped up the best huevos rancheros in the world. SO fresh & delicious! I really cannot recommend Rancho Loma enough. Service, food & the accommodations were all A++. Robert and Laurie have created something truly special and we can't wait to return again!

I usually avoid going through Abilene but when I saw Grain Theory pop up on an online search, I was sufficiently hungry and needing a rest so I decided to take a different route and headed to downtown Abilene. I was pleasantly surprised at the cute downtown, even more excited to find a fashionable brewery with good food and chill vibes after a long day of driving. I had dinner in the outdoor area as the sun set, and this was a lovely way wrap my day.

Located on the second story of a beautiful building in downtown Abilene sits Grain Theory, a brewpub and coffee shop towering over the city. It is a mixed indoor-outdoor space with plenty of shaded outdoor and cooled indoor seating. Looking at their tap list, my girlfriend and I were impressed by their unique beers to try. I started with the Strawberry Peach Tonic (Fruited Hard Seltzer) and she had a Bella Rose (Rosé IPA). Both were served in cool glasses, with mine being tall and skinny and hers being almost like a wine glass. Shocking to nobody, mine was quite fruity while her Rosé IPA was hoppy with an underlying rosé flavor. Next, I ordered their Oktoberfest (German Märzen) and she had their Season's End (Belgian Dubbel). She described her drink as tasting like a Biscoff cookie. My Oktoberfest was quite malty, and I was a big fan. To close, we both ordered their Luscent (Belgian Table Beer) because small beers are back in fashion and I wanted to try it. It was obviously very light but still had a good flavor that was very bready. Nice and easy to close out our drinks with. They also have food and coffee that we didn't try, but the food looked sensational from what we saw others eating. They also have plenty of board games and card games to play while you're at the brewery and many beers available to take to-go. My only minor complaint is the lack of TVs in the brewery. Maybe it's a purposeful decision, but Texas Tech was playing football, and it would be a great place to watch the game. The bartenders are very friendly and willing to let you try and sample as many beers as you need to make your decision. Grain Theory feels like the kind of place every small Texas city wishes it had. I am very excited to come back here and try more beers, especially with how excellent the space is. RIYL: Cool-shaped beer glasses or a rooftop bar
