Large airy terminals
Jim R.

Like many of the terminals we have frequented on our two week Australian adventure, the Adelaide terminal is bright, large and modern feeling. On top of this the check-in and security processes are smooth and efficient and virtually stress free unlike the horrific conditions at most US airports. Here there are plenty of places to sit at the gates and they are not too crowded. Since most people check their bags (for free) there's no mad scramble for limited over head space so no jockeying for position in line at the terminal. Just a group of relaxed people waiting to head out somewhere exciting.

Picture a giant shipping container made of glass and light and filled with the enticing aroma of coffee and awash with a sense and practicality and lack of ostentation that is all Adelaide baby and you've pretty much imagined this airport. My two prerequisites for any building I am in - giant windows and a sh!tload of natural light - are present here in spades, and they reinforce the freedom and optimism that flying used to have before air travel became just another commodity ruled by add-ons and penny-pinching and Ryanair-like scrimping and no leg room. Remember when you could smoke Stuyvesants on planes and bang movie stars in airplane toilets? Those were the days.

Departure hall

One of the nicest airports in Australia, open, airy and light. It is one long rectangular building, international arrivals on the ground floor, other upstairs. Lots of spaces in the car park at all times, level 2 is easiest as it is connected via an air bridge to the terminal building. Although there is a ramp to the departure level, it was deemed unsafe and has been closed for a long time, so drop off and pickup use the same lane and can be busy. Just drive around the queue and pick a spot a bit further down. Check-in is quick and smooth, even on a busy day with the queue commencing at the checking kiosks the one central security screening is efficient and quick. Cibo coffee next to the Virgin departures is fine, and there are a dozen or so shops in the departure hall, including luggage and book shops.

Airports are one of my favourite places ever no matter where in the world. Although I don't have any profound travel quotes like some other reviews, I do have plenty of wonderful things to say about Adelaide airport. In my eyes it is brilliant. Clean, well set out and spacious is everything you want in an airport. The new carpark is fabulous, especially with the lights and signs telling you exactly where the free spaces are. Never again will you have to circle the carpark in a hurry. It's best to park on level 2 so you can take the footbridge straight across to the terminal. The spiral entry & exits does creep me out a little bit but perhaps that is because I'm waiting for Batman to swoop down and attack me, but I digress. It's a short distance from one side of the airport to another so if you are running late you don't have too far to run. If you have time to spare there are plenty of the usual shops to occupy your time from the ever popular Cibo to a South Australian staple in the Coopers bar. Or do what I do and simply people watch, it's far more exciting to see happy arrivals than emotional goodbyes. Safe travels!

I love going to the airport. There is something about it that is so exciting. Even if you are travelling interstate, just the thought of some sort of adventure ahead gets me excited! Adelaide Airport is not too big, but it does have everything that you need. It is really well designed, well lit and open. It is actually a very clean airport too, floors are always nice and shiny, no rubbish about, toilets are looked after well. The signage and gates are very easy to find. No need to feel overwhelmed or confused if you are in a rush. Staff and security are generally friendly and happy to help as well. The security gate and customs is quite quick, but like most airports, you have the morning and afternoon rushes. I have never had to wait longer than 5 minutes at customs. As for seating, at the gates, there is a lot available. But I wouldn't say it was very comfortable. The seats looked great upon installation but now the leather parts are wearing down. The padding on the chairs isn't the comfiest. Maybe it is designed that way on purpose to stop people from falling asleep and missing planes? My overall thoughts of Adelaide Airport, simple and easy. But, Adelaide isn't the biggest city after all!

There's always a car park around and it won't take you more than a few minutes to walk to the terminal.
