Tucked away in Little Gilbert Street in Adelaide is the Adelaide City Mosque. Believe it or not this mosque was built way back in 1888 to cater for a large Islamic community living in Adelaide at the time. Many had arrived here as camel handlers when Thomas Elder brought over a hundred camels and 31 handlers to Adelaide. It is said that by 1890 over 80 people lived in Adelaide and used the mosque regularly for worship.
It is the oldest major city mosque in Australia. Following original construction in 1888, Its four stunning white minarets were added in 1903.
The delightful building goes almost under the radar in terms of its presence and the only clue you'll get that something's going on there is that on certain days of the week traffic, both cars and pedestrians, around the vicinity of Gilbert Street will increase as people arrive for worship and prayer.
