Here is a friendly church in Heidelberg for any Adventist travelers whom might find themselves in the area during Sabbath. It happened to be a youth Sabbath when I attended. There were young adults from all around the region, and one of them was kind enough to translate for me in a discussion group involving Spanish, German, and English (me). She was tri-lingual, as was her husband. Amazing talent, and I'm grateful they put it to use in making me feel welcome. Walking through the old town area of Heidelberg, you can see the reddish front of the Jesuit Church…read moredown a narrow alleyway off the pedestrian zone. Interested to know more, we wandered down the alley to a very pretty ,small 'square' of old buildings (Richard Hauser-Platz). We took a few photos of the square, then stepped inside the church. Jesuit churches I have visited in Europe have a 'light and airy' feel to them. I enjoy the 'heavy' gothic churches too, but this Baroque, white interior church is just beautiful. White columns highlighted with gold details, vaulted white arched ceilings, high windows illuminate the bright, minimally adorned interior, delicate glass chandeliers reflect light without interrupting the white expanse. The pipe organ is also lovely with gold baroque detail on the keyboard cupboard. I did not get a chance to hear the organ played, but I suspect it would be worth a visit to hear. There are a few areas along the interior walls with devotional areas which may include a painting with a table below, candles, flowers or other item. A museum is attached to the church, but we did not enter. You can easily wander around the church in a short time and be on your way again. This is an active parish, so be aware when visiting locals may be inside praying or services may be on- going. If you like Baroque style, this is definitely a stop to make. Easily accessed from the pedestrian zone (the Hauptstrasse) in the old section of town near University Platz.

The Church was constructed between 1398 and 1515 in the Romanesque and Gothic styles. It annually receives 1-3 million guests a year, making it among the most visited churches in Germany. We were lucky to hear the church's magnificent organ in action during our visit

Made this one of our stops strolling through Heidelberg…read more We stopped at the tourist center to get an idea of what to see in Heidelberg. The map was only 1.5 Euro and had brief descriptions of each site listed. The church is not on the main thoroughfare so I'm very happy we had the map to lead us to it. The outside of the church is beautiful and amazing! Once we stepped inside, we were even more amazed. There is no entrance fee to enter the church. I was surprised at how bright this church was on the inside, since so many of the churches are very dark. The architecture, windows, altar, everything was a pleasure to behold.

In Speyer we wanted to see the historic church the tour guide had said was where Martin Luther…read morenailed his 95 theses to the door. This led us to the Memorial Church of the Protestation; alas we were misinformed - the theses were nailed to the door of All Saints Church in Wittenberg. Nevertheless we made it here just as the church was closing, and the gentleman closing up graciously allowed us a few minutes in the Memorial Hall. Here is a bronze statue of Luther and six other protesters from the 1529 Diet of Speyer, which the church memorializes. No door theses, but still a beautiful church and worthwhile to see.

The stained glass was beautiful, incredibly detailed in its painting on glass, and the light it filled the sanctuary with was inspiring. Images included stories of Jesus' life and ministry and stories from the Bible, old and new testaments, as well as reformers Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, and Melanchthon (the last I don't know). I liked also the metalwork of the baptismal font with its fish & ship, and the podium with its fishers of men visualization.
