It's fishing and you can't control if you catch or not but I'm sure Kyle put us in the best position to catch fish. Also he's a cool guy and that's important considering you're on a boat with him all day. The longer Story: We went out with Kyle for two days 7/31 -8/1/17. We got lucky with phenomenal weather (75 and clear) and great fishing conditions. On a full day charter you can go further out to try spots only other full day charters/commercial boats use. Going further out means you'll be travelling awhile, and we had a good time exchanging stories and chatting. I was one of the assholes who figured "It's Alaska, throw a rock and you hit five fish" but after actually fishing up there, it's still fishing. Sometimes you have bites, but most of the time your'e chasing fish. With a captain like Kyle you get to be in the best position to catch fish. He was knowledgeable about where to go, what to do, and how to do it. Our group ranged from experienced fisherman who've been to Alaska and crappy new guys (me). Kyle was good about giving us the information we needed. We found out how not to hurt or kill each other/ourselves. And also catch fish. Our group enjoyed our trip so much our discussions aren't if we want to go back, but when. Since you might want to know, The first day we got our max for Silver Salmon but had a rougher go with Halibut and Rockfish. The second day was the opposite and we had a rough go with the Salmon but maxed rockfish and Halibut. We flew home with a nice blend of fish.

This visitor center is sizable, with a row of kiosks seasonally staffed by tour group companies, washrooms, and a general information desk. The workers are quite enthusiastic about helping, even though the queue of people lining up needing to be helped was quite daunting. Pamphlets and information line the walls, free for the taking. Helpfully, there's a whiteboard with the cruise arrival and departure information. I guess it help passengers understand the timing of everything so no one gets stranded! The only downside is that there's no free internet - you have to pay for a limited amount. Oh well, that just encourages you to go out and explore the town.

Ketchikan isn't very big, but they offer some easy self-guided walking tours that make exploring a lot more fun. Plus, there's just something nice about having a paper map in hand. It's practical and makes for a great little souvenir afterward. The staff are always friendly and easy to chat with, and over the years, they've pointed us toward a few things we might've missed otherwise. There's also a wide range of brochures you can flip through if you want to plan on the spot. They have free restrooms and an ATM on site, too. If you're looking to book something last minute, their Tour Center (open May through September) is a really convenient option for same-day tours. They also have visitor centers at Berth 2 (open year-round) and Berth 3 (seasonal), so you'll likely run into one no matter how you arrive. Overall, it's a great and helpful first stop to help you make the most of your time in Ketchikan.

We were lucky to get Austin as our guide for our group of 4 and he provided us with knowledgeable, engaging and entertaining information about our surroundings. We started off with the Rainforest walk and then stopped over at visitor center and learned about the local Totem art and history.
