This is such an adorable little shop, and the staff is over the top friendly and accommodating - we were able to pick up several souvenirs, and we had a wonderful time looking through the many titles they carry, and enjoyed the conversation immensely. When a person can jump onto their preferred electronic device and either order what they want and have it delivered to their doorstep or electronically, store front retailers have to really step up their game or go the way of the dodo. This either leads to a stroke of genius in the creative department or it leads to compromise. Unfortunately, compromise seems to be the sad story for Dellinger's in Spruce Pine, NC. When you walk in, you are struck by the shear quantity of inventory strewn about the space. The small book section has been relegated to the rear of the store and maybe what was surprising to find were books by mormon writers and even secular authors sitting next to books by some notable Christian authors (many of the titles were dated) but not many. Think of a Christian book store in the 1980s and what would be on the shelves from that era. On the up side, if your in search of a KJV Bible, they've got scads of those. Most of the rest of the space is littered with knick-knacks and paperweights, some of which is faith based while much of it isn't. Probably the most awkward thing found in the gift section was the college sports paraphernalia. Like many other throwback stores like this, there is plenty of patriotic stuff to be had. I've never been comfortable with the blending of Americana and Biblical Christianity, but the folks at Dellinger's seem to be. Maybe the saddest thing I saw was something my wife discovered. Among the Hallmark greeting cards was a card depicting a bikini clad woman wishing the recipient a happy birthday. OK... I get it. There's a market for cards like that and I wasn't offended by the card. What troubled me was the fact that when I walked back outside to see if I missed something I did confirm the sign in the window said CHRISTIAN Books and Gifts. At the end of my experience at Dellinger's, I'm sad to say that I may have missed the creativity that will allow this ministry business to thrive. What I did see was a world of compromise mixed with tired, traditional, outdated, and outright sad.

They have a great midnight pre-release that does not end until 6 am, and are known to buy pizza for the players on occasion. Their singles are sold at TCG mid - which is very fair fir a LGS- and i always buy when i am in town.

Once inside, you're welcomed by a warm little entry area filled with reader-centric gifts. Notepads, pens, beautiful bookmarks, and the kind of clever, charming finds you actually want to pick up. I even spotted a ball cap that said "Bookish," which was equal parts cute and tempting. Then the space opens up, and wow. Antique metal tile ceilings, a wide open layout, and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lining the walls. The floor space is anchored by large, beautiful wooden tables styled with books and reader gifts. Everything feels intentional and aesthetic without crossing into cluttered. When I visited, it was Valentine's season, and the chandeliers were decorated with paper heart garlands. Somehow whimsical without feeling busy, which is no small feat. One section that especially stood out to me was their Christian book selection. They have a wonderful, thoughtfully curated collection of Christian fiction and Christian nonfiction, along with truly beautiful and unique Bibles. At checkout, I noticed a past workshop that involved creating a wreath or large flower out of old book pages. Such a creative and meaningful way to repurpose books.
