Until we get a cure, this is why we gather to help those with AIDS when no one else will or shuns them. This is not just one of those feel good community events that one donates too and then we all go home till next year. People are dying from AIDS and the social stigmas that surround individuals are slow or reserved to people caring. The support from the community keeps this event alive now for 18 year. The grand marshals, Penn and Teller were not this celebrity that we all "think" they are, or if they are they hang that hat at the door and join the human race for this cause. Penn and Teller also provided the breakfast for all the racers which included Panera bagels and assorted o.j. and/ or water. Another sponsor that made this event happen was Yelp, so let's give a silent yeah to our cyber entity for caring for those whom need it. This event was organized very well and staffed with volunteers that one would think are employees. All of Vegas it seems came out to support this event. There were performers from some of the biggest acts in Vegas such as the dancers of La Reve, the dream. I do a number of charity walks each year that are usually 5K runs and/or walks. For this one, most people walked. We got to Town Square early and there were no lines. It also gave us a chance to check out some of the vendors or other groups that had booths. The walk started almost exactly at 9 AM. The crowd of several thousand made there way around Town Square and out to Sunset Road. Crossing over the freeway on Sunset, we got a grand view of Las Vegas. We went about 1/2 way to Valley View before turning around. There were water stations along the way. We were all in a fairly festive mood and the walk was a very pleasant event. The Walking Yelp exceeded their fundraising goal. Next year, I hope we double the number of Yelp participants and have a larger team. The AFAN Walk is a charity that's good to support and good in which rto participate. I'll be back next year! read more

Great day for a walk! On Sunday, April 19th, The Walking Yelp Team was in full force at the AFAN Aids Walk at Town Square, along with 12K other people who were there to help support this wonderful cause. The final tally of funds raised was just over $400,000 with The Walking Yelp adding to this by surpassing its original goal of $500 and raising over $900. Along with the walk, there were games, refreshing snacks, and live performers keeping the crowd warmed up and amped for the big awards ceremony. The event pretty much took over the entire Northwest corner of the Town Square parking lot with the walking route zigzagging through main shopping streets and going over the freeway via Sunset. There were a few optional obstacles throughout the walk, but for the most part it was very easy and mellow walk. Participating in this type of event can be very fulfilling, especially when you have great group of walkers with you. It was a perfect day for a 5k walk, and I had a lot of fun meeting up with my Yeeps to participate in the AFAN Aids Walk. Yelp had its very own team and everyone got a Yelp shirt for participating! People who raised over $25 were eligible to get a bag from AFAN (although I would have preferred a t-shirt). The course was set in Town Square and a few streets were even closed off as part of the course. The AFAN walk had the most participants I've ever seen at a walk/run event. And I thought the Color Runs were bad! I really liked that there was an abundance of water stations located throughout the course. There was even a section where people could hop through tires if they wanted (or lift them hulk style like Terri did). The AFAN Aids Walk was a well organized event and supports a great cause. The only thing I'd suggest for improvement would be making the event more runner friendly. I don't do the walking thing, guys! The 25th annniversary of Aid for AIDS of Nevada AIDS Walk took place on April 19th, 2015, at Town Square. It was an absolutely gorgeous day to walk a few miles with thousands of others who were there to show their support. The Walking Yelp team represented with ten members who raised over $900 for the charity and we had a great time. Carpooling with Norm K., we arrived early enough to sign in at the Team Sign-in table without a line, grab our SWAG bags, and walk around the booths. There was plenty of pre-walk entertainment on stage from local entertainers, including the Jabbawockeez. The walk itself started promptly at 9:00am and we made our way through Town Square and then out onto Sunset Road for a bit and then back. There was a great energy and everyone there was in a fabulous mood. Thank you to all the family and friends who donated to our team. I highly recommend this event for people of all ages; it's a wonderful organization and a fantastic event. The AFAN AIDS walk was awesome sauce! What's better than hanging out with a bunch of Yelpers on a Saturday morning? Getting in your exercise and supporting a great cause at the same time! AFAN is a great community organization, and I appreciated that their event was more organized than others like it that I've attended. The route was straightforward and took us past shops in Town Square as well as up Sunset Road for great views of the surrounding mountains. Various businesses had booths at the start/finish line, and there were live musicians and performers throughout the course to keep things interesting and fun. Penn & Teller were there showing their support, and offered a matching contribution contest for those who were really into the fundraising aspect. They were on hand for a short while afterward for photos, but we just barely missed them. Speaking of fundraising, I really liked that we were not harassed as walkers into donating more or fundraising an absurd amount- team goal was set by our CM, tracked on individual pages, and earned goodies like shirts and backpacks. Having a "required" participation donation to earn a shirt, like most others have, might net more funds (and possibly happier participants, based on some conversations I overheard) rather than the $50 shirt minimum and no required donation. I do feel that this event could be improved (and possibly increase participation) if it were organized more like a 5K with a set route with a specific distance, and perhaps two start times for the more athletic folk vs walkers showing their support. Last note, the shirts this year were really nice- especially for those who participated in the Penn & Teller challenge! read more

It is always good to give back to the community. I was delighted to see this event pop up and quickly signed up. Sadly only a handful of Yelpers shared my enthusiasm. I have lost a few friends years ago to AIDS so this was personal for me and participating was done in their honor! The event was well organized and there was plenty of things to do while waiting for the event to start. There were several booths set up by local businesses advertising what they do. Many offered treats and water for walkers. Several of the booths had a spin the wheel contest for prizes - I won a free eyebrow shaping, T-shirt, sun glasses, and water bottle. It was fun to stroll through the booths and gather goodies for my free bag I had acquired. Many of the walkers brought along their furry friends which several had dressed up for the event which added to the fun atmosphere. There was plenty of entertainment going on prior to the start. Several of the strip shows got up on stage and did a piece from the show. Penn and Teller who are big supporters of the event also got up on the stage briefly. They also have a special section for those that are on their team which was really nice. The walk which was only a 5K went around the Town Square was fun. The walkers were all enjoying themselves. I got to say I have done several charity events like this and this was one of the best ones I have participated in. The organization was truly impressive. After the walk I had to head home but they did have entertainment after the walk. I miss doing things like this and look forward to joining other charity events. To be able to give back and to also enjoy the experience is pretty awesome. Made my Sunday truly special. Thanks AFAN staff - you did a great job for a great cause -Bravo!!! read more

AFAN AIDS WALK is always a blast! 2018 was no disappointment. Penn and Teller are the perfect hosts for the event, the fact that they match donations over a certain amount raised makes me feel like my fundraiser efforts are worth it. It's totally worth coming as soon as the festivities begin before the walk. Las Vegas has the best entertainment and they show up to support the cause. Great show! After attending for the past four years I've met a lot of amazing people that come out to support every year. I really feel like I'm a part of a strong supportive community. If you want to have fun supporting a great cause please join us next year! read more
