The Islamic cultural center is a magnificent landmark and a truly special place. From the moment I entered the grounds there was nothing but peace. The beautiful Mosque is grand, modernist architecture on Third Avenue, you know you are visiting a landmark of spiritual and cultural significance. It is one of the city's largest mosques and serves not only as a place of worship for the Muslim community. Stepping inside, the vast, light-filled prayer hall with its soaring dome is breathtakingly peaceful. Upon entering the prayer room, shoes are not permitted. The ladies are on one side, and the men are on the other. Which I actually like because it was nice to have a place wherein ladies can speak and pray amongst themselves. Even though we were there for final prayers for the family matriarch. We were all at peace. The space is immaculately clean and well-organized, with a palpable sense of calm that is perfect for prayer and reflection. The staff and regular attendees are exceptionally friendly and welcoming to newcomers, including non-Muslim visitors like myself. The center also offers a wide range of educational programs and events, including weekly classes and forums, demonstrating its commitment to being a true cultural center, not just a mosque. Whether you are seeking a place to pray, to learn more about Islam, or simply to admire the unique and beautiful architecture, the ICCNY is a phenomenal place. This is a welcoming mandir. I visited for a wedding a few years ago & came for Sunday service…read morerecently (9:30-11:30am) The building is a stand-alone structure for worship in the Parkchester neighborhood of The Bronx, unlike many other Guyanese mandirs in the boro that have to make due with part of another building. You enter through the side entrance & leave your shoes in the basement on a large wall with shelves designated for shoes. The bathrooms and community center/dining hall are also in the basement. The mandir itself is fairly large with the altar at the front. There is a central carpet runner for an aisle and plush carpet to sit on with chairs for those who would like it. It is modestly decorated. The large murtis are very nice and there is good lighting. After the service, very delicious Guyanese vegetarian food was served downstairs with tea, water, and soft drinks. Overall the place is very well organized & gives you a sense that there is structure without being exclusive to others. What struck me most about this mandir is that visiting as a stranger was not an issue: no stares, no segregation, and no silent treatment. There was an absence of expected West Indian judgement. In fact the congregation was actively welcoming - both stalwarts and new comers like me. The pandit that day was informative and moderately interactive but did not make anyone uncomfortable by demanding participation. In fact, the pandit encouraged using our phones during the service, so that we were enabled to find the position of the moon with Google. This allowed us to determine the darkest night/Diwali, together. In many Guyanese cultural activities in The Bronx, there can be a general sense of, "uhhh is this how it's done?" with underlying awkwardness that either an older person helps rid or you just accept it as whatever. In contrast, the Sunday service here was warm, informative, and provided an feeling of belonging - even among a group of strangers. I recommend visiting if you wish to explore Hindu Guyanese culture, want to bring your mom to church, or are just exploring your own faith/customs while here in New York City.

It gives you some prospective on things, the instuctors are most pleasant and I would most definitely recommend it for those who seek to get into meditation at no cost. Why i take points off: the shrine to Sri Chimnoy, and all the religion/cult like paraphernalia makes me slightly uneasy. Meditation is a legit neuro stress management technique, there's no need to package it into any of this. The room gets very full and this is a public school gathering hall (ps 020 Anna Silver) so it's a pretty large audience - during the meditation, the phones will go off, there may be coughing and other miscellaneous distractions. The bottomline: this is a once a week 5 week workshop: how you benefit from it depends on a large part whether you exercise what you learn in between these sessions.
