I work in retail and see him working around the clock, night and day for his community. I let him know that I knew of people who needed help and he offered to extend his hours so I can stop by after work to pick up what my friends needed. In addition to his local contributions he also ships containers to the communities in the country of Trinidad. He's showed me footage of his work which I believe he uploads to a YouTube channel, and you can see the joy in his eyes when he puts a smile on someone's face. I have always heard about these places providing support to family members of their ill kids-but never knew to what extent. The house is staffed 24-7, and provides lodging in an almost resort like environment. Great care went into every detail of the house, to better provide services to their guest. Their are 19 guest rooms, and they were at 90 % occupancy. During my visit, another volunteer group had just made breakfast for the guest-while another group was cleaning doors and windows. My group got to help setting up the holiday decorations. Thanks to the many private donors, companies and people who volunteer their time to make this happen.

Staff is nice and available 24/7. They provide lunch or dinner depending on who donated that day. You are expected to give $25-35 donation per day if you wish. That's how they are funded. They have computer room, kids room, mini library, patio, play area, living room, game room, TV room, laundry and kitchen. Visitor can come visit you only in the common area from 9a-9p. They provide shuttle to go to the hospital (Need to schedule in advance). There is also free parking (they charge $5/day at the hospital). I'm thankful this place is here for us.

I highly recommend this for anyone who is looking to volunteer in the community and help make a difference. It's a five year commitment - you get paired up with an eighth grader and you are their mentor until they graduate from high school. The goal of the program is to encourage them and provide guidance to help them along the way. You are required to spend a minimum of eight hours per month with your mentee - but scheduled program activities count towards those eight hours. The people who run the program - Carrie, Tina and Dara - are amazing. Carrie does such a good job pairing up mentors and mentees. Operation Jump Start has a great support system so you never feel like you are alone - they are there for you every step of the way. The program offers structured activities through out the year - and they vary from workshops to museum trips to Cirque du Soleil to rock climbing, etc. It's so much fun. I've done so many things I never thought I'd do like surfing and snowboarding - and going to the opera!

They offer mostly structured meetings to help the students. So as a mentor you don't always need to worry about planning what to do. As Kreuzensolo mentions, you do spend some of your own money, but the organization never asks you to spend anything you don't want to. It is completely up to you. There is never any pressure. As Mary mentions, the organization provides great support for the mentors and more importantly the students. Like any non-profit they suffer from being understaffed and underfunded. As a result some of the sessions could be better organized. However the effort put in by leaders such as Erik can't be questioned. All the mentors and staff genuinely want to see the students succeed and get to college. If you feel strongly about helping educate under served students, then I highly recommend checking the organization out.

MoWLB was one of a few organizations that came up, so I completed their online form from their website (https://mowlb.org/volunteer-2/) and I received an email and text message a couple days later. The volunteer options are food packer, administrative support, driver and/or friendly visitor. I selected to be a driver and friendly visitor. The time for these positions are from 10am-12pm, Monday through Friday, while food packers have an earlier shift. Lisa and Calinda are the ones who coordinate with the volunteers and interns. They are really kind, organized and appreciative of any and all help! They set me up with a few veterans at first to show me the ropes of understanding the routes, process of bagging the meals and the nuances of getting to clients' homes. We are required to wear masks and they offer gloves as well as hand sanitizer. The most surprising discovery in my training though, was the inconsistency of sanitizing. People wore gloves, but they touched various doors, Gates, keypads, buttons for elevators, and bagged meals! No one really emphasized or stressed the importance of sanitizing hands between deliveries. I did not wear gloves, but made sure to sanitize my hands after each delivery. I worried that the elderly clients would get Covid-19, but during the several months of volunteering, there were no reports of clients getting the virus!! Perhaps, this goes to show the virus isn't as easily contracted by surfaces. I was sad to inform Lisa and Calinda that my summer break is over and I will be returning to work next week with an anticipated busy fall semester (WFH), but once things start to settle, which I hope it does, I will return to help again. The volunteers and clients are the sweetest and I really enjoyed working with everyone there!

If you're supposed to get cinnamon apples with your meal, then serve cinnamon apples. It's a joke to only get a teeny piece of one that is not even a bite. When someone goes on vacation or is sick and you leave messages, many messages, someone else is supposed to be filling in and it ends up messing the orders up or the days and times up, and no one calls you back. The people that deliver the food, do not ring the doorbell. They only knock at the door and if no one answers and they see an old ice chest outside, they put food in it even though there's no ice. Food in an ice chest with no ice goes bad especially when you don't know it's there. Very disappointed.
